A must have "ready to grab" for any veterinary clinic and wildlife rehabilitation center

This an excellent book to have for a veterinary virology class. I have never learned so much about different viruses!

This book is highly recomended to those of us who must struggle through veterinary microbiology. It makes the subject decipherable, and does not slip into the jargon that is so often found in science textbooks. The book begins with intrductory "How viruses work" material, before moving onto the various virus groups. Each section of the book starts out with a general introduction on how that group works/attacks, wheteher they need intermediate hosts, lifespan in the outside environment, etc. Then, it delves further into each virus within that family (genus/class?) with sections on pahtology, epidemiology, etc. All in all, a very nice reference book for veterinary students. There is not much info on West Nile, but there is a nice section on Foot and Mouth. Generally, those viruses which are important in the West, plus a few that are important for other reasons arecovered. Other viruses are mentioned. There is also a small section in the back on prion diseases, which may not be important currently, but will be important to know about, even in te USA (Scrapie, Chronic Wasting Disease, just to name a few.) I highly recomend this book.

very didatic and easy to understand, that explains all about the vet virology in a very easy way for the college students,contents many examples about real cases and variety on important viral strains into the veterinary medicine and microbiology.

I have always loved the theme of the plain girl getting the handsome, athletic, top of the popularity school guy.This story started out very sweet with Allie pining over Connor. Connor and Allie are extremely likable characters. Connor has grown up next door to Allie and they have been the best of friends since childhood. Connor is very protective of Allie and he even drives her to school to everyday. Connor has had a slew of girlfriends but in his heart, Allie is the one he cares for the most in his lifeAllie, on the other hand, wears baggy clothes and when she looks in the mirror she sees just a plain looking appearance. She has never been on a date. She has friends and is a bit of a tomboy. She is the trainer for the football team.However, once her friend Eden, "the fairy godmother-ish character, forces her to do a makeover, things start changing. Other boys in the school really see how beautiful she is and start to show her much more interest. Connor's jealousy sparks to full force as other boys want to date Allie and the rest of the novel deals with how the two of them change positively in finally letting their true feelings out.However, as an adult reader, the angst, angst, angst wore me out. I think this novel could have been shortened for all the repetition of feelings, pretend dating (that part I really couldn't figure out) and eventually toward the HEA.I started skimming through pages and then just read the epilogue and the two chapters preceding it.I did like how the reader has both point of views for the characters.As of 8/5/17: I added to the stars because I admit to going back and reading the chapters I skimmed over. It is extremely sweet and definitely pulls at the heart strings.It is a clean read and definitely a good YA romance for teenagers who love all the twists and turns for confusion, misinterpreting signals, and finally reaching the HEA by the end.

I really wanted to like this book. I found myself struggling about 40% through to keep going. Connor isn't very well written. He comes off as needy and co-dependent. Allie is bratty and whiny. And absolutely clueless. Not in a cute way. In a what the heck is wrong with you sort of way. Both characters are one dimensional without ever becoming deeper.The book jumped around mid-story between characters. And even Eden, Allie's annoying, snarky bff, had a cameo takeover in the middle of the chapter. How this book is ranked so high is beyond me. This was a cute idea that fell off the rails due to the author not developing the characters better.Overall, it's a solid 2.5 stars from me.

This is the perfect best friends to more troupe - after I got past the very beginning I was hooked!Starting off, though, was a little rough. The tense it was written has the narrators saying â€œshe was...,â€ and â€œhe was,â€ - and it just felt awkward, like - are they dead?! But once I allowed myself to get over this I barely noticed it. I think the author found her groove a few chapters in and that helped a lot. I did find some of the cutesy language of the narration a little annoying (eg. they are talking to the reader directly - I donâ€™t really want to be spoken to in a book). Again, the story itself makes up for this.

There were not many devastating scenes that break your heart, however I couldnâ€™t imagine this book any better. I loved it. I SCREAMED at the end. So loudly. The epilogue fulfilled my every hope. I just really really want a plot line for Jamie. He was so sweet and cute and funny. I also loved JJ and this book, I must say, has given me goosebumps. I am in complete love with this book, I definitely recommend if you like the best friends to lovers trope.

Conner and Allie's story is the story that happens at every high school but you still root for it. This was excellent from start to finish. The story just flowed and there was never a lull in the storyline. Beautifully written.

The book was cute and fun to read. Will recommend to all my friends. I love the way the male character just completely protect his girlðŸ˜

i hate returning books, but i hate poor writing even more. i didn't even make it through four pages of the first book before making the decision to return all three for a refund.

Believable, sweet, heart throbby. If you love young love, read it! Good pacing too. I really like how the heroine is so relatable.

I am very interested in studying Law. I even want to enter a law school. But I canâ€™t, since I am fulltime teaching math and already got my PhD. So I decided to study by myself. I found this book from the book list for law students at UCLA School of Law. I like this book very much. This book is about criminal law and its processes as the title indicated and more importantly, it has many cases and materials. Thus, this book has the fundamental legal knowledge.I heard some student said that studying law is boring. But I feel this book is not boring at all, it is fascinating. It not only has the knowledge law students need to learn but also has interesting lead to guide students to learn.This book has ten chapters. Chapter 1 is Institutions and Processes. Chapter 2 is The Justification and Punishment. Chapter 3 is Defining Criminal Conduct â€“The Elements of Just Punishment. Chapter 4 is Rape. Chapter 5 is Homicide. Chapter 6 is The Significance of Resulting Harm. Chapter 7 is Group Criminality. Chapter 8 is Exculpation. Chapter 9 is Theft Offenses. Chapter 10 is Discretion.

This edition is one of my least favorites because it just didn't cover enough subject areas. It could have been a few hundred pages longer to include other crimes instead of shorter and limited to only a few crimes and cases.

...now in book format. This one has EVERYTHING: murder, robberies, conspiracy, entrapment, old-timey English courts with judges in wigs, sea captains, nautical murder, russian roulette, forbidden love, vigilantism, drugs, drug busts, and, best of all, the Model Penal Code.

This is the books law students carry everyday. They pour over this. Many go back to it after they've passed their bar. I got it just to educate myself on the laws and processes of our litigious nation. It's complicated but its also structured to keep your interest. A GREAT READ!

I bought this only because I needed it for a class. It's comprehensive and informative, but don't buy it at regular price.

You have to touch the equation itself for just the right amount of time, then tap on the plus sign in the circle. Getting "just the right amount of time" is what makes it tricky. My objective in reading this book was to find out what the fine-tuning discussion is about. Explaining the supposedly finely tuned parameters required a lot of explanation of modern physics along the way; I thought Stenger did that rather well. I also found his arguments to be pretty clear and easy to follow. I did not agree with all of them. His use of equations helped with the explanations but I think one could follow his reasoning even glossing over the equations. Frankly, I did some of that myself. However, Stenger uses Planck units to express the equations of physics without five of the fundamental constants (the speed of light in vacuum and four others). He concludes from this that those constants cannot be finely tuned because they donâ€™t even appear. This conclusion is just plain wrong. Speeds, for example, when expressed in Planck units, are given as dimensionless fractions of the speed of light in a vacuum. But it is the relative values of speeds that matter, not the units in which they are measured. If the speed of sound in air (1100 ft/sec or 0.00000112 in dimensionless Planck units) were close to the speed of light, the universe would be very different! The same observation holds for phenomena whose measurements expressed in terms of the gravitational constant, the reduced Planck constant, the Coulomb constant, or the Boltzmann constant. That is, those constants are not removed by using Planck units, they are merely implicit instead of explicit. That said, this is only one of his major arguments.

"In The Fallacy Of Fine-Tuning" Stenger brilliant demolishes the argument from design and fine-tuning. A physicist by trade, Stenger put his knowledge to work in attempting to answer the big questions of the universes origins and true nature.The book is articulated well with it's share of humor and analogies (so laymen can understand). However there is some unavoidable technical scientific stuff so it's not the easist read. The book is likely his most technical book in recent years. You will likely, unless your come from a scientific background, skip over some things or accept them without complete understanding. But Stenger does well enough in his articulation that you likely should be able to make it through.Unlike his other books however this is much more specific on it's topic and contain less overlapping with his other books (which he is known for doing). The book also is a bit to digest (as our most if not all of his books). He goes all out and leaves few if any stones unturned. Also the technical bent can be annoying to those who prefer more mainstream, popular books.I would recommend that you check out some of his other books especially "God The Failed Hypothesis" as together they make for a much more complete argument on the existence of a higher power. Also I would recommend some other atheist books such as "The God Delusion" (Dawkins), "Th End of Faith" (Harris) & "Godless" (Barker). Their more mainstream, easier to read and better for the average reader.At the end of the day I found Stenger's books the most helpful in helping me form my own beliefs about the existence of a higher power. His books take more time and dedication than his colleagues but he's much more in depth and complete in his arguments in analysis. For me figuring out what I wanted to believe (and thus how I was going to live my life given what I believe) was important. So the time and energy I took in reading and digesting Stengers material was worth it and you may want to do the same.That being said the book is not for everybody. If you don't care too much to learn, or are already sastified with your current knowledge, about the fine tuning argument, and see why the argument comes up short, then the book is not for you. But again if you do care and what the complete picture before you make your decision on what you believe then definitely hear Stenger out in this book and his others.

But, many people feel that so called "white lies", lies that they think cause no harm or whose truth content would make no difference, are somewhat permissible and even necessary at times. But what if these moments of opportunity are the difference between a great world and a semi-decent world? In short, is it always wrong to lie?Philosopher and neuroscientist Sam Harris' long-form essay Lying approaches this question and answers with a resounding "yes". In fact, Harris' whole thesis could be summed up on pg. 24 of his book: "Do not lie."Harris at the beginning of the book states that he started thinking about lying seriously when he took a class at Stanford University called "The Ethical Analyst", and the entire course revolved around whether or not one should lie. The book is divided into three sections, one in which Harris makes arguments about why telling the truth in all situations is best, the second section is a dialogue between Harris and his professor who taught "The Ethical Analyst", Ronald A. Howard, and the final part is Harris answering questions from readers who read the e-book version of Lying, which was released prior to the hardback version being released.As mentioned previously, Harris book focuses on white lies, and on situations where honesty gives the person the information they need in order to live the best life possible. Perhaps one of his best examples is a situation we have all encountered or at least heard about before, namely whether someone looks fat or not in a certain outfit. Harris writes:"Most people think that the correct answer to this question is always "No"....But this is an edge case for a reason:It crystallizes what is tempting about white lies. Why not simply reassure someone with a tiny lie and send her out into the world more confident? Unless one commits to telling the truth in situations like this, however, one feels that edges creep inward, and exceptions to the principle of honesty begin to multiply. Very soon, you may find yourself behaving as most people do quite effortlessly:shading the truth, or even lying outright, without thinking about it. The price is too high." (Lying pg. 15-16)In short, Harris is saying that when we commit to be honest in every situation, we will be better people and less stressed with how much we have to remember, because we will have nothing to hide. Harris does also comment that tact plays a role in this, one can be truthful without being rude. I admit that I at times struggle with this, but it can be done. Harris also talks about "Faint Praise", which is giving someone a compliment when one has not been earned. For instance, Harris mentions a friend who is a successful writer, but once gave Harris a text that he thought was terrible. Rather than avoid the question, Harris told his friend that the piece was not his best work. The reaction was that Harris' friend trusted him more, and now knows if Harris praises his work, he is being sincere. Since relationships are built upon trust, it follows that we must be honest in order to have rewarding, fulfilling relationships.If there is one failing in Harris' book, it a failure that is common to his other writings, which is not taking the arguments of his opponents seriously. On pages 28-29 of his book, Harris mentions that philosopher Immanuel Kant thought that under no circumstance could lying be justified, and then dismisses him by saying that he has no reason to take Kant seriously. Here is where Harris shows that he is a scientist first and a moral philosopher second. Kant is one of the greatest philosophers in moral theory, one can hardly find a volume dealing with moral philosophy that does not mention Kant extensively. Furthermore, Kant justified his claim in his various Critiques, but Harris fails to mention this at all, he just dismisses Kant and moves on. This is a characteristic that Harris shows in his other work, such as in The Moral Landscape, when he dismisses David Hume's Is-Ought distinction (which fellow utilitarian Peter Singer calls him out on in a recent podcast), or in The End Of Faith, when he dismisses Noam Chomsky's arguments about how interventionism by the United States in the Middle East helped to bring out the September 11 attacks. It is not enough to simply dismiss a reputable philosopher with whom one disagrees; one must show charity to their argument by presenting it at its best and showing why your position is better than theirs. Harris has not yet learned this lesson.Overall, Lying is a book that I recommend to both the general reader and philosopher alike. It is interesting, short, and a joy to read overall. It can even be said that if we take Harris' arguments seriously, we can be better people, have better relationships, and ultimately a better planet.

I liked this book, partly because it suits my taste about ethics and personal relationships.I believe in honesty and I believe in truthful communication.The problem is, many times the thing we see as true today might be a lie in the future because life is unpredictable. I might be careless about that promotion today but in two years from now I might be in need of money and in need of that same promotion.I haven t lied but I have been inconsistent.And I feel the book does not state well enough the need for clear opinions first, with truth being the side-effect. Truth is something you need to think well about before you say it.I believe that without the necessary forethought, being true "prematurely" could severely damage your sense of integrity.In all, I liked this book, it s worth reading and considering its ideas.

This is a simple work by Sam Harris and perhaps the least controversial. Although not a exhaustive discourse, Harris provides that lying is both socially and personally damaging and should be avoided.By no means is it easy to remain truthful, amongst a world with double speaking politicians and a competitive job marketing, but that doesn't curtail Harris' conviction. He says "We are talking about a culture poisoned by lies. And that is a culture worth changing. " Although not easy, truth will bring about a redeemed culture.I am familiar with ethics, having read Benthram, Kant , and the like. For those like myself, Harris doesn't say anything new. Although his power of rhetoric stands out as compelling of this impertive.The most insightful point of Harris' which I believe society would do well to remember revolves around alturistic white lies.Harris says "When we presume to lie for the benefit of others, we have decided that we are the best judges of how much they should understand about their own livesâ€”about how they appear, their reputations, or their prospects in the world."This continues with the problem of flattery when Harris says "And yet we are often tempted to encourage others with insincere praise. In this we treat them like childrenâ€”while failing to help them prepare for encounters with those who will judge them like adults." Important concepts to consider.A committment to truth is a difficult thing, especially if one is late to embrace this value. But truth is essentisal to personal development. Â "because a commitment to telling the truth requires that one pay attention to what the truth is in every moment. What sort of person are you? How judgmental, self-interested, or petty have you become?"(loc 118).The only time Harris admits the value of lying, although without recommending it, is in response to a reader question that made it into the audio book. Harrow explains the benefit of untruth is that is the most benign weapon we can use in times of conflict, much less damaging than a gun when it comes to issues of self defense. Yet the integrity of the lying person isn't exempt from scrutiny in these situation, and there's no guarantee of positive outcomes even with deception appearing the smart solution.Although not the focus of the book, harris makes a home run on the value of Justice when he says "One of the worst things about breaking the law is that it puts you at odds with an indeterminate number of other people. This is among the many corrosive effects of unjust laws: They tempt peaceful and (otherwise) honest people to lie so as to avoid being punished for behavior that is ethically blameless."The final reader submitted question in the audiobook version of lying was answered unsatisfactory to me. The reader explains he is a non-believing Jew, but being honest about his lack of Jewish belief would damage many relationships and likely make him lose custody of his kids (I'm telling the cliff notes version). The reader suggests that Harris is coming from a spot of elitism, where others are not in such a spot to act as Harris. An intriguing point, similar to those who claim philosophy is naval gazing for those who escape the plight of the real world. How does Harris answer? He comments on the problem of religion and says yes, this is a difficult Â situation. Harris offers no answer, but rather says this is why open discussions are to be valued with free thinking people.Â To read between the lines, I suggest that Harris would have this gentlemen reveal his lack of religious belief in an effort to (ethically) further society through free thinking. It is no easy feat, and the reward to this man himself may be minimal, but that is why people should see to the goods beyond themselves - ethics consider all. Â To reconsider the opening quote "We are talking about a culture poisoned by lies. And that is a culture worth changing." and hopefully the sacrifices made now will driver future generations.Â I have no criticism of "Lyings" arguements. I agree there is an ethical imperative to honesty and didn't find a problem with Harris' conveyance. This is a conversational book, not one of hardcore dead to rights philosophy; a great conversation starter at least to lead to deeper thoughts.I paid 13 for the kindle ebook and audio book pairing, which took me around an hour to get though. I am content with my purchase as it has allowed me thoughts to consider. I can't say I would recommend this book to others, as it is both entry level and costly, and my lying friends would probably not read it. Â However, Sam Harris commitment to truth establishes him as a leader in a time of demagoguery, and for his virtue I will continue to support him.Â

The book is presented in three sections. The body of the book is the author's premise: lying erodes trust and is always a detriment that we should avoid, as individuals and as a society. The second part is an interview with the professor whose course inspired the book. The third is a question and answer format of questions presented by readers of an earlier edition. I felt the three sections should have been combined into one work, with more illustrative anecdotes and less hypotheticals.

I was introduced to Kelly McGonigal by her TED Talk "How to make stress your friend," and after spending the last year overwhelmed by generalized anxiety disorder and almost unable to function like I need to, I decided it was finally time to get this book. It begins with a compelling overview of the contents of the book and then dives deeply into the specific ways in which embracing stress as a positive part of our lives can change how we physiologically respond to stress.The best part is this is no gimmick: McGonigal grounds all of her claims in extensive research, using statistics and anecdotes to tell a compelling story that is at the same time informative and entertaining. I frequently found myself bookmarking pages to come back to, wanting to repeat exercises in my own life to help with issues I've faced or know I will be facing in my future. Throughout the book, she includes about a dozen or so reflection exercises to facilitate reframing our stress mindset. On my first reading, I wanted to gain a broad overview, so I rushed through these exercises and made notes to come back to them as grad school and my busy work schedule allow; regardless, understanding the science behind stress and having a toolbox of ways I can interrupt debilitating anxious thoughts has certainly proven helpful almost every day in reclaiming my life from unbearable anxiety: rather than feeling defeated by anxiety, I'm becoming able to control it and direct this energy into enhancing my life. As I take time to return to the reflection exercises she provides, I am certain this impact will grow.The only complaint I have about this book is that the sources are not cited in the text (they are, however, included in an exhaustive bibliography at the end of the book, but there is no easy way to match the text with the sources this way). Especially for a Kindle book, I appreciate being able to easily find the sources that are referenced, since as a research-minded reader, I like being able to see how recent studies are, where they were published, or any author's notes that may accompany them. I hope future editions of this book will correct this shortcoming.Overall, if you have ever suffered from undue stress or anxiety, this book will help you tame that beast and make it work for you.

I am over 60, but for the last 50 years I have repeatedly and increasingly tried to avoid Stress.I have mistakenly believed that Stress was my biggest enemy. With each passing decade the stress in my life became greater. After reading this book I now view Stress as my friend. We understand each other now and fully appreciate that we are on the same side. I found these words from Kelly to be true for me. I have had two stress occasions since I finished this book. They seemed much more straight forward and very different to deal with. So far, so good.I am surprised by some of the negative or dismissive reviews of this book. I can only assume that these readers were unwilling to genuinely deconstruct and reconstruct their relationship with stress. I found myself reading this book at different speeds and with varying intensity but every now and again some words like the following -'People who cope with adversity by shifting and persisting seem immune to the toxicity of a difficult or disadvantaged childhood.'would stop me dead in my tracks and I would go over the same words, again and again and again.My old stress tools of denial, distraction and escape have melted under the spotlight of examination that this book provided. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone who wants to change their response to stress.

Stress increases the risk of depression, except when people see a benefit in their struggles. Stress is paralyzing, except when people perceive themselves as capable. Stress is debilitating, except when it helps you perform. Stress makes people selfish, except when it makes them altruistic. For every harmful outcome you can think of, there's an exception that erases the expected association between stress and something bad - and often replaces it with an unexpected benefit." (Final Reflections)McGonigal does an excellent job in a very readable fashion of explaining each of these concluding claims in both biological and psychological processes. She also gives you the means to achieve a positive change in your own response so that you can build a much better life despite stress and trauma. It is not based on an idealized glossing of traumatic experiences, but rather a balanced look at positive benefit that can be found alongside the pain we feel.

About the Author

Rod Pyle is a space historian who has worked with NASA at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Johnson Space Center. He has written nine books on the history and technology of space exploration and science for major publishers in the US, UK and Asia. As a journalist, Rod's work has appeared in Space.com, LiveScience.com, The Huffington Post, Popular Science, and many other print and online venues. Rod has also produced documentary programming on spaceflight for The History Channel as well as Discovery Communications. He has written on spaceflight and science for NASA/JPL and Caltech, and authored a guide to executive education for the Johnson Space Center/The Conference Board's Apollo Leadership Experience. I've known Rod Pyle for while now, and I knew he was a good writer, I didn't know he was such a comprehensive researcher. I have skimmed through this book for a quick read to provide a review. Based on my first pass, I can state without a doubt that this book is amazing, it is easy to read, provides some fantastic artwork, and historical photography too. What I like the most about this book are the factoids based on interviews from professionals and business owners in the aerospace industry and research details about the myriad of various areas which took me on a ride from private spaceflight, through NASA (some of which I was already familiar) and the new entrepreneurial disrupters of the present and a view into what the future of spaceflight might see. What was also insightful was the historical significance and context which gave me a complete picture. Now that I've skimmed through I'm ready for a slow read to take it all in with hot tea and relax and fully absorb all the deep work Rod Pyle put into Space 2.0. What is really wonderful is how well written this book is, which is refreshing. Don't miss this book as it is great to read but it also is a great desktop reference for spaceflight. If you have teens that are interested in aerospace this is a fantastic book for an overall deep dive into spaceflight, many questions can be answered by reading this book and some that have never been asked.

I have carried it around with me in my backpack during three weeks of intercontinental travels, and the binding has held up well.The book tells the story of how humans got into space and covers the historical aspects of Space 1.0 (up through the last Space Shuttle mission).The book proposes all the reasons that it is both feasible and desirable for a Space 2.0 and talks through both governmental and private current space ventures.The book describes in logical and well provenanced terms what the rationale for getting into and staying in space are from protection of the Earth through gaining resources through exquisite manufacturing and ultimately as a way of exploring the unknown.Everywhere in the book there are absolutely gorgeous full four color pictures.This book is fun to read as well as informative. (Imagine my surprise and delight when the passenger next to me took the book to read when I dozed off on my flight. How many books does that happen to?)I could not be happier with either the presentation or the content.Well done Rod Pyle!

Big, bold print. Great & easy music book to follow and has everything I need. My only gripe is the quality of the cover. It's just a cheap, flimsy card stock that tears easily. I'm gonna cover it with clear self laminate to secure and preserve the book. Other than that, I love it. Great purchase.

A union guy kept it and won't give it back. It's got lots of songs I grew up with on the radio. I learned to read music better and transcribe my own bass parts from using the piano bass notes and then listening to the records. It probably helped me have a better idea of what the Eagles went through as people, but with all the times I 'd have to listen to the records, I eventually was able to hear the band member's voices that were probably not meant to come out on the records which were in the control booth or studio.

Two hallmarks of the Eagles were their harmonies and great guitar solos. Don't expect to find those here. Strictly for amateurs wanting to sing and play guitar or piano at house parties.

My friend is taking it to a place that will turn it into a spiral book so she can lay flat when she plays the piano.New music for her (she's 86) but I know that she will have fun with the songs.

got to just love this book

It's great having access to all theses Eagles hits - planning to perform quite a few. There was another Eagles book quite q while ago that included vocal parts as well, which would have added to this one a lot. It's still a wonderful collection. I just saw them last week, and they still have the magic - one of my all-time favorite bands.

Love the Eagles, love this book of songs.

Great book for learning all or any of the Eagles songs.
