'Those are trashy books,' she told me when I was a child. So I grew up and did not write them. "But kids are wiser than adults, I learned. Letters kept arriving from schools and homes, saying, 'We want to know more about Sam, Frightful, and the wilderness.' 'Sequels,' they said, 'are important.' They were right." Now, all three of George's remarkable novels about the wilderness adventures of young Sam Gribley and his falcon, Frightful, are available in one handsome volume. In My Side of the Mountain, a Newbery Honor Book, Sam leaves home to fend for himself in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. For a year he lives in a hollowed-out tree, befriending animals and depending on his wits for survival. In the sequel, On the Far Side of the Mountain, Sam's sister has now joined him, and his falcon is confiscated by a conservation officer. Frightful's Mountain is an interesting departure for George. I love this book. I first read it when I was 8, living in Connecticut, with family friends who lived in downstate New York, where the Catskills begin. I always wanted to find a quiet hillside on which to live, as long as I could find a library nearby to keep me company. I read this book to all of my children, and they in turn re-read it when they were just a bit older. It's for that little bit of longing to escape from the world that visits nearly everyone from time to time.
I got this for my 11 yo son because they were going to read the first book for his 5th grade class and he loved it so much he wanted more and his own copy! Less then 3 weeks later he had finished the entire set:) So if you have a kid that you want to get into reading that likes the out doors this is the book set for them! I am going to barrow it to re read it because it has been a few years.
I read this book aloud to my children. They absolutely loved it, and so did I. Ms. George obviously enjoyed exploring all of the survival concepts she could think of, and she did a fine job telling the "story" of the possibilities in each situation. This is a teaching book, which is why it will always be a classic. It not only teaches survival concepts, but also responsibility and courageous stewardship.
Although this book is intended for young adults, I decided to get it even though I'm in my 50s. I'd read it when I was young and really enjoyed it. I kind of half expected to be disappointed....often things I liked as a youngster seem pretty lame now. This book, however, was still good. Some parts were a little, "Oh, yeah, right," but was mostly realistic. Would recommend it to anyone of any age.
I first read this book at school as an 8 year old. I never forgot the book "My side of the Mountain" or the name of the author. I still have my original copy, and to see it here for sale I had to have it. This book triggers the imagination, It boldly explores a boys desire for being in touch with nature and a simple life. This is a book everyone should read.
This is one of my favorite children's books. It is a throwback to a different time when vocabulary was rich and peppered the pages of children's literature. It is an excellent story of man and nature and ever so readable. Please, PLEASE buy this for your children and read it with them. Share with them a time when education was vastly more important and appreciated than today.
This was my favorite book as a child! My second grade teacher read this to us as part of reading class. She only read a chapter a day, so on a Friday,{ I couldn't wait until Monday}, I went to the library and checked the book out, and finished it over the weekend. To this day i can't understand why my teacher was so angry when i admitted this to her. Anyway, i bought this to read it to my granddaughter, and i hope she enjoys it as much as i did.
I read My Side of the Mountain when I was in junior high school, and I wanted to get this book for my son. I read it before I gave it to him, and I couldn't put it down. Each night I read one of the the trilogy and I remembered why I loved it so much as a kid. My son is in 2nd grade and now he is reading it too. He is young, but reads non stop so a novel isn't too much for him. I am so glad I finally own this book, it's a great book to turn kids onto reading, and it is a great book for all ages.
If you have boys between six and ten, you can't go wrong with this book. My boys are six and I took great pleasure in reading it to them. When my boys are ten, I have no doubt they'll take great pleasure reading it themselves.Lots of terrifi descriptions about something every young kid thinks about at least once (running away). Very, very well imagined and executed.Recommended without reservation.
