I recently had a closing meeting where my client and I would be negotiating deal points. I had some lead time so I took the opportunity to pick up Patrick Tinney's book on negotiating Unlocking Yes: Sales Negotiation Lessons & Strategy and I am very glad I did. What I found in Tinney's book is 50 short and easily digestible lessons that I could easily put into action.Unlocking Yes covers the entire spectrum of negotiation with alacrity. There is a complete framework here. I enjoy books that are high on actionable content and low on wordy exposition and Tinney's book is both of these. Each lesson is concise and specific and the work throughout is loaded punchy lists that make the lessons easy to apply in real life.I always have a bit of trepidation when picking up a book such as this because there is a whole breed of sales and negotiation books that operate from a combative win-lose mindset. I am happy to report that such is not the case with Unlocking Yes. What you'll find here is strategies firmly rooted in a win-win philosophy that is based on maintaining long-term relationships and trust. It's not about winning at any cost and this resonated with me. There are no gimmicks, tricks or hacks. Instead there is preparation, trust and mindful strategy.I very much enjoy Tinney's writing style which is brief and to the point. It's extremely accessible. The stories are short, illustrative and always make their point. (and they don't always end happily for the negotiator) The density of information is quite high and I used up two highlighers reading it.Most books on negotiation focus exclusively on negotiating and can sometimes become abstract. In contrast, Tinney has accomplished something special in this book - he has combined sales and negotiating into a single work that makes it extremely valuable for those of us in the sales profession.Many individuals have too few opportunities to negotiate to ever master their negotiation skills. Unlocking Yes allows us to draw on Tinney's years of experience and synthesize our own. Unlocking Yes is such an easy read with such valuable implications that I would argue that for those that negotiate with clients (and especially for those in high-stakes negotiations), reading and applying Unlocking Yes may very well be the best use of their time. I highly recommend it.

I just finished reading this book by Patrick Tinney and and several things stuck out. First is the short, tight chapters, I was able to dig into the book fast and get insights without getting lost in a lot of other unnecessary information. Thrree chapters stuck out to me. Chapter 7, and the 4 powerful words in negotiating. Chapter 11 and the list of questions, these are gold and everyone needs to review these questions before entering into a negotiation. Chapter 19 and the idea of doing a SWOT on the customer you're about to negotiate with. This is not a new concept but the author lays it out in a way that it is easy to do.The book is clearly well worth reading as the ideas you will gain will give you a massive payout.

I went back for this one after reading the author's book on prospecting (Perpetual Hunger). Reading the two within months of each other, I was struck by similarities in formatting and content. These two books are best read together because they re-affirm and extend from each other. You can't get too much of a good thing.The problem with most books about negotiating is that they are written about and for professional negotiators. This book meets three common needs that most don't. First, as presented here, negotiating is part of (not instead of) relationships with buyers. Second, the author includes some critical fundamentals that are often glossed over in other works. Third, the author addresses what it feels like to be thrust into a negotiating situation. He offers practical advice for things like dealing with stress and getting through moments when your confidence wanes.I also found the historic stories here to be a nice departure from sales-only examples. After all, the lessons and strategies for negotiating can be used in any setting and for any purpose. I highly recommend this book for any one who wants tools for making better deals.

Probably wouldn't be here if we had DDT.Here's the deal, if you read this book and you already think DDT is bad, you'll agree with this book. If you have an open mind (and who really does anymore?) and read this book, and fact-check the book, you'll find that Rachel Carson committed a crime against humanity.

Silent Spring is as relevant today as it was 50 years ago. Our ground, our air, our food and we are bombarded with chemicals, carcinogens, products of all sorts to kill weeds and bugs and are capable of killing us. Rachel Carson, a biologist and talented writer, walks us through a litany of misuse and overuse of chemicals that have never been tested for safety to humans. Laws are on the books requiring this testing to be done, but it is disregarded because they make our grass greener, our bugs keel over dead and a lot of people rich. Carson is known best for revealing the reason that Bald Eagle eggs had such thin shells that they broke well before the required incubation before hatching. The drastic reduction is successful Eagle births was DDT. Because this is our national bird and is supported by activists in and out of government, DDT was banned and the eagles began producing young again. We have not been so lucky. This book is factual in a clear and understandable way, and it informs us of the human actions and choices that put us all at risk. No alarmist language is employed, but facts lead us to conclusions that are concerning. The stunning fact to me is that the book was written fifty years ago, and the same risks to humanity and our future are being taken today when we could find better ways of solving problems, more cautious ways of using chemicals and restricting their use in sensible ways. As I talk to people about the issues raised in this book, they have not heard of Rachel Carson and have heard nothing of the assured negative effects on our own health from the chemicals we expose ourselves to daily. We knew so much back then when Carson wrote this book. Why hasn't more been researched and shared with us, so we can have current knowledge of the facts and risks. It is important that Carson's writing not be buried on a dusty shelf. It is a real mystery story and we are the cast.

I have not read "The Sea Around Us" and "Silent Spring" for many years but now and then I browse through them when I need to read about the thinking of the time and the beauty of the prose. This purchase was made to be sent to my granddaughter who should have them when she is old enough to understand them and learn from them, and of course, to enjoy prose written with love. The Carson bio I have not read at all. It was bought specifically as part of my gift. The first time I read "The Sea Around Us" I was mesmerized and so spellbound I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Every time I go back to it the result is more or less the same. "Silent Spring" is a little more technical in its scientific, scary message to all of us. I am an 84-year-old man who may not be here much longer and if I can leave something for my grandkids to remember me by I can see clearly it must be the treasures written by romantics like me and bound between two covers or however the future dictates.

I grew up as a farm girl fully exposed to the new poisons in home and field . I farmed for 35 years before understanding environmental crime and converting my gardening practices. Only now, thanks to Rachael do I know the extent of chemical damage and it's extensive impact. She has instilled a constructive fear in me to continue a conversion of thought and practice.

It's a good quick read. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone younger then 16. Carson was a great author and could reach most educated people. That said much of the content is well above the general populus knowledge level. The sales pitch of it being a novel was completely inaccurate. Most people won't understand the chemistry although she does a fair job tracing many of the common pollutants like DDT through the major environmental mediums. While the book is great for historical context, I think everyone interested in Preservation, Conservation, or Environmentalism should read this.

Rachel Carson started an environmental awareness revolution with this book in 1962. She shed light on the harm of pesticides and other commonly used chemicals on animal species and the environment. She faced harsh criticism from the establishment but the evidence presented in this book and her testimony in front of congress lead towards a ban of DDT use in most of the Western world and lead to the creation of the environmental protection agency.Today we take for granted the knowledge that pesticides and chemicals can be harmful to our health, but this was not always the case. During the first half of the 20th century chemicals were highly regarded and allowed for mass food production, efficiency in industry, and decreased cost of production. Chemical were modern and the future. Rachel Carson sounded the alarm of the harms of chemicals and stood up for what we take for granted today. This is where modern day environmental awareness began.

This book is only interesting for people who are into science. I had to read this book for Bio AP and honestly it was boring, but that's my own opinion. The package came fine and the book was not damaged, so not much to complain about there. But this book is just repetitive rants about pesticides, I definitely would not recommend if this is not for a project or some educational purposes.

I always meant to read this in college. Scarier now than ever. The chemical industry will be the death of the planet someday!

I love music, but I'm not a big classical music fan, and I don't play the piano. But I've really, really enjoyed this book. The gist of the story is that Mr. Rusbridger has a year to learn one of Chopin's most difficult piano pieces, the Ballade No. 1. He only gets to practice for perhaps a half hour a day. How does he do it? He gets a teacher, of course. But he also talks to many, many pianists, including some of the world's top pianists. He also talks to a few neuroscientists to figure out how, for instance, any person can possibly memorize a piece like Chopin's Ballade No. 1. At the same time, I should mention, Rusbridger is editor of the Guardian newspaper--so he's running a newspaper at the same time he's trying to figure out how to play this difficult piece. The lessons that Mr. Rusbridger learns about piano are not limited to the piano, of course, and that's what makes it doubly interesting: any new skill requires similar dedication, and yes, practice does make perfect.

Recommended to me by a teacher at piano camp Sonata when I expressed that my next piece is Chopin Gm Ballade which I gave up completing 15 yrs ago.This book expressed exactly Same issues and same feelings. I loved it from the first page . . . Gave me hope to persue again. Since I started working on the piece, I am able to play whole piece as a rough draft within a month. I didn't think I was capable at late 50s of age to play it again.I look forward to finish the book and finalize the piece so I can perform for my Audience.Wonderful book. Thank you for the inspiration !

This book is a great narrative of what an amateur pianist can achieve if he or she is decided to. I really enjoyed reading it. What calls my attention is how Mr. Rusbridger got to know all kind of experts about the Ballade. Somehow he was surrounded by pianists, musicians and professionals. Me as an amateur pianist, barely know other pianist or musicians. Sad to say...anyway if you play the piano and you have put yourself different challenges, this book is a good reading. Recommended!

I have just finished reading Play it Again, after savoring its pages for more than a year now. I loved it so much, and did not want it to end. Alan Rusbridger has done a great service to the amateur pianist community by writing such a thorough account of his travails with Chopins ballads. His writing style is sublime, as one would expect of a distinguished newsman. The book is a thoroughly enjoyable read, but more than that, it is a wonderful up-to-date guide on all things that affect and concern the amateur pianist. Most enriching was his plan to meet and interview several accomplished pianists and then to share their candid thoughts with us. As I read, I felt like I too had been granted the priceless opportunity to converse with Barenboim, Ax, Perahia, Berezovsky and many others.I rank this book as one of 2 great reads for piano enthusiasts, the other being the 3 volume Liszt biography by Alan Walker.Bravo Mr Rusbridger! Bravo! Write it Again.

I am a musician/pianist and know the score of the Chopin Ballade in g minor. It was grand entertainment for me to read about all the pitfalls and successes Rusbridger had with learning the Ballade. I kept the score at my side while reading it, therefore I knew the exact measure he was talking about. I sympathized with him all the way. I also liked the various interviews he had with professional pianists, piano makers and scientists. Makes me want to go back to learn it again. It's incredibly beautiful. My only complaint is that he doesn't mention his family very much in relation to their part in his quest to learn the Ballade.

I loved this book. It inspired me to take up piano lessons again. His tales of practicing in the middle of an incredibly hectic schedule, shopping for a piano, playing on the weekends with colleagues, and interviewing major performers enriches the narrative.

Such a fun look in to the life of an editor at the Guardian in one of the craziest years he must have had WHILE he tried to learn a very difficult piano piece. This book purports to be about the journey of the amateur trying to do something on a professional level outside their level of expertise. It is so much more. A swift, engaging, and inspiring read. Though I am not learning Chopin's Ballade Op. 23 because of it, I am learning one of the scherzi!

We think it normal for people in high-powered jobs to go to the gym regularly, but a work out on a very difficult piano piece provides a more challenging counterpoint to a very busy job. Two tense tales splendidly interwoven. When did he find time to write a book as well?

Just like the other Gail Gibbons sports books, this book does a great job introducing the basics of the game to a child without getting bogged down in too many rules. It holds my child's attention so that he can understand what the game is about and the basic concepts. It doesn't go through the whole 9 innings (thankfully!) but still tells the child about the players, some of the rules, the baseball diamond and how to score.

I didn't pay attention to the dimensions described, so I was surprised to see that the book was smaller than I expected. However, this book is a great resource for young baseball fans. It is eligible for the nonfiction reading requirement for my first grader, who sometimes appreciates a break from historical or biographical topics.

Perfect for my young grandsons who knew little about baseball. Written at their level of understanding. We then went outside and had a great time simulating a game!

Excellent book for children, plus restores interest & knowledge in baseball for the older folks.

My son reads this on his own. It is almost like a how to book. Great book to help the reader understand how the game works.

I bought this for my son's fourth birthday last year. He loves baseball and I thought this would be a book that was both entertaining and educational.He loved it. We read it everynight for about two weeks and he began to understand what the different positions and rules were.It is a year later and we still read it occassionally just for the fun of it.

I don't usually review books because so many others do a better job of it than I can do, but I want to give this book another 5 star rating. The Red Notebook is going on my list of special books. The story moves along smoothly and a great deal happens in a simple and elegant way. It's not particularly realistic, so a suspension of disbelief is necessary in order to appreciate this plot.I admit that I love happy endings, so that is my bias. Fans of gritty realism will be unlikely to enjoy this charming tale, but others who enjoy a well written story about an unlikely chain of events that ends well, may be briefly transported to Paris and a search for the owner of a stolen handbag.

I have to award five stars for this wonderful little book because it made me happy; like drinking a glass of French champagne, it lifts you up and takes you along on a short and delightful journey.There is so much darkness in our world......the news is bad enough but a lot of modern literature is dark as well, so The Red Notebook was like a breath of fresh air. This book would come under the genre of light romance, but it is so much more than that. I enjoy books with depth, and I felt Antoine Laurain accomplishes this with his clever writing and his subtle presentation of such a charming story.Translators, unfairly, rarely get a mention, but excellent translation from French to English by Emily Boyce and Jane Aitken further enhances this little gem.Go purchase this book for a rainy day when you simply want to lose yourself for a few lovely hours.

While walking to his bookshop one morning, Laurent Letellier notices a nice lady’s handbag perched on top of a trash bin. Suspecting the rightful owner may have been mugged, Laurent takes the purse with him with the idea of returning it. Careful examination of the contents revealed several little treasures including a small red notebook of her observations, all of which told a bit about the woman but no clues about her identity. At his daughter’s urging, Laurent follows the few leads he has and just when he hits a dead end, a chance encounter not only unlocks the mystery but also draws him deeper into a stranger’s life. Although he would love to actually meet Laure, the woman who owns the purse, Laurent feels he has trespassed beyond all polite boundaries and chooses to remain anonymous. It will take some creative meddling to bring these two prospective lovers together.Set in France and translated from French, this charming light read draws readers in as Laurent’s warm, caring nature carries him through the Parisian streets searching for a complete stranger. There is just enough family history and backstory to add credibility to this sweet melding of mystery and romance that concludes on a satisfyingly upbeat note.

I agree with the Daily Telegraph, this book is an ABSOLUTE gem. Such a lovely story that will appeal to any hopeless romantic. Parisian book shop owner finds discarded handbag. His inner detective is awoken. Will he find the owner? Will there be romance or a restraining order?Well done, Monsieur Laurain! Truly a magical story. Potentially creepy, but magically romantic, nonetheless. A quick romantic mystery that is not to be missed. I highly recommend!

Laurain's style and how much he can put into a brief phrase are everything I want in a book like this. I will read it many times over before I absorb every nuance. A book such as this requires the author to take his time, as I take my time reading it. This means his output may not be as profuse as I would like. But as I am considerably older than he, I may miss some work in that manner. There are more novels not yet translated or published in English. I hope his translators, Emily Boyce and Jane Aitken are working very hard indeed. I thank them for the graceful translation of The Red Notebook. Vive Antoine Laurain!

I'm a sucker for romance and I really enjoy stories that are charming, sweet, and, resonate with my belief in true love. A chance incident that leads to a chance meeting that becomes a glance full of meaning between a man and a woman. This is the first eBook that I have purchased in a very long time. I chose it because the story summary caught my eye. Its a very sweet quaint story. I did enjoy it although it was sometimes difficult to follow along when the author changed topics (storylines of characters.) It would take me half a page of reading and then rereading to figure it out.

I was looking for something light and kind spirited to read, and I honestly could not have done better. As much as I enjoyed “the president’s hat”, i expected this novel to be less engaging, mostly because the premise of this one did seem to offer the whimsy or the soul of the President’s Hat.But while “the red notebook” is not as deep or philosophically interesting, it is every bit as much fun to read.I don’t want to ruin anybody’s pleasure in reading this book, so i will not go into detail about characters or plot.But all The characters, even those whose roles are small, are all fully realized and identifiable people; even the cat was charming.Although the story plays out slowly, the book moves quickly thanks to many little twists and turns and also because the characters are so easy to like, and the world they inhabit is so charming.I think often a story that plays out like this, where you are waiting for certain inevitable events, can become tedious, but for the most part the author is able to avoid that by jumping back and forth a bit between characters, and by introducing little twists to his gentle mysteryIt helps too that we always know a little more than the characters, rather than the other way around.This is supposed to be a light romantic mystery/comedy, and it delivers on its promise.
