Review

“[An] impassioned and alarming report on sand.... In Beiser's artful telling, the planet is caught up in a vicious, sand-fueled cycle.” —Washington Post “Beiser peppers research with first-person interviews in an engaging and nuanced introduction to the ways sand has shaped the world.... stunning.” —NPR “Beiser’s eye-opening study clarifies the science and the huge role of sand in heavy and high-tech industry. Perhaps most compelling is his exposé of sand mining, which obliterates islands, destroys coral reefs and marine biodiversity, and threatens livelihoods. A powerful lens on an under-reported environmental crisis.” —Nature “Whether in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, or India, [Beiser] exhibits a flare for detailing the human drama through prose.” —Los Angeles Review of Books “I thought I knew the basics of sustainability, but this lucid, eye-opening book made me feel like a dolt in the best possible aha-moment way: I'd simply never registered how much of the contemporary world—our concrete and glass buildings and asphalt roads and silicone-based digital devices and so much more—is entirely, voraciously sand-dependent. And the looming global sand crisis: who knew?” —Kurt Andersen, author of Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire: A 500-Year History “A fresh history of 'the most important solid substance on Earth, the literal foundation of modern civilization.' Books on a single, familiar topic (salt, cod, etc.) have an eager audience, and readers will find this an entirely satisfying addition to the genre.” —Kirkus Reviews “The book is at its urgent best in chapters on the black market in sand and the sand mafias that brutally exercise control over resources... Breezily written and with insights on every page, this is an eye-opening look at a resource too often taken for granted.” —Publishers Weekly “A rich study of one of the world's most abundant natural resources: sand. With a balance of statistics, science, history, on-the-scene reporting and some healthy environmental skepticism, The World in a Grain highlights the ways this ubiquitous global commodity has been essential to human development and advancement.” —Shelf Awareness “The World in a Grain is nothing less than one of the best reporters working today unpacking the literal foundations of civilization. Everything we are, everywhere we live, is built on or out of sand, and Vince Beiser tells the best story of where that sand comes from, who moves it, and what they build from it. It's a whole new way of seeing the world.” —Adam Rogers, author of Proof: The Science of Booze “Modern life, as Vince Beiser compellingly explains, is literally made of sand. Yet we have been so profligate with this seemingly inexhaustible resource that for many uses in many parts of the world we are running out. The World in a Grain is a chronicle of innovation and greed and heedless waste—in brief, the story of civilization.” —David Owen, author of Where the Water Goes “A riveting, wonderfully written investigation into the many kinds of castles the world has built out of sand. You'll find something new, and something fascinating, on every page. Perhaps even in every paragraph.” —Nicholas Thompson, author of The Hawk and the Dove “Sand shortage? Black market in sand? Secret sand heists? Who knew? I certainly didn’t before reading this lively and eye-opening book about a material I’d always assumed almost infinite. Vince Beiser shows, with great skill, that this key component of our fragile, over-consuming planet we need to better understand, conserve and protect.” —Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold’s Ghost and Bury the Chains

First of all -- who even thought about sand??? What an unexpected and yet essential thing to dig into (sorry). Second, the book is not only fascinating - covering sand as used in concrete, glass, technology, beach reclamation, exploring the environmental, social, economic, political impacts of this under-appreciated resource -- it's also a surprisingly fun read. The writing is engaging and crisp, and fun little interstitial factoids (how many grains of sand ARE there?) provide a nice counter-point to the well-researched longer chapters. Sand mafias? Who knew?? It's full of insightful, well analyzed, and unexpected ways we depend on what turns out to be a limited resource. Read this book and you'll be the hit of every cocktail and dinner party. You'll also find yourself thinking more about how little things matter, and more deeply about how we live in the world. I sped through it -- reading it feels like talking to your favorite interesting friend who always has great stories to tell.

Vince Beiser's fascinating new book, The World in a Grain, is about one of the world's most important substances......SAND.Beiser provides us with a both revealing and at the same time a very concerning summary of the world's every day usages of sand and the alarming depletion this non-regenerating material. A virtual textbook, the extensive research he has done in pursuit of the uses and sources of the various types of sand available throughout the world is evidenced by the manner in which he lays out his detailed findings in very easy to follow and understanding way.Beiser also sounds the alarm on two counts: the first being the very rapid acceleration of the use of sand by countries that before the 21st Century never used sand in any significant quantities and secondly, the deterioration of concrete structures due to aging which, he points out, is not an eternal product. These aged structures will sooner or later have to be demolished and/or will fail on their own requiring replacement which will add to the burden of the diminishing supply of sand.Although Beiser doesn't foresee an immediate shortage of sand he finishes his book with a waning that sand is just one element of a much larger problem of the world, that being over-consumption. H e advises hat we all must learn to live more moderately with less, share with the world and attempt to develop alternative ways of construction and technology that requires less usage of SAND. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the many uses of sand and the long term forecast of it's potential for extinction.

I know some of you are hoping that this topic just goes away, are trying not to scream that you can't stand to buy one more book about one more natural catastrophe and are wondering if its enough to read the reviews and pretend to keep up with your friends when they talk about it.This isn't that book. Beiser is a helluva storyteller, so the inventors, builders, risk takers and criminals who have brought us on our blissful trip to our sand-based built environment all spring to life. Glass, for instance: Beiser reflects on (sorry) it in Galileo's telescope , in the short but vital history of beer bottles and in your cell phone -and in any chip embedded in your worldly goods. What's more, the crisis stage is fairly recent, the US market is not the culprit and there are many solutions... You CAN handle this knowledge, have fun acquiring it and take action. Even though it's Really Important.

Driving around today, all I could think about was sand. Under the car, in the buildings, in the overpass, everywhere. And everything requires a specific kind of sand. This book is amazing. So well written and informative that you want everyone to read it. I confess, I mostly read murder mysteries. This was a departure and I expected it to be boring. Boy was I wrong. Knowing what I know about sand now, when I drive under an overpass, or go on a bridge I wonder if the contractor used the right sand. This is a real murder mystery. Wars have broken out, and people die because of the demand for sand. And many more will die as a result of just using the wrong damn sand. Who knew? Read this book. It is enlightening and freaking scary. And extremely well done. Kudos to the author.

A thoroughly researched and well-written book about Mary, Queen of Scots. Having just returned from a memorable trip to Scotland, and being an avid reader of biographies, I read this book with great interest. Mary was one of the most fascinating and courageous women in history. Her life and her rock solid determination to establish her claim to the throne of Scotland and later England form the basis of this book. The author does an excellent job of presenting various intrigues, conspiracies, religious conflicts, pursuit of power and deceit that surround Mary's life. Except for a few sections--for example, the Casket letters I and II-- the book is very interesting to read. I found the epilogue, in particular, to be an outstanding section that presents a superb portrait of this remarkable queen. Overall this is a good book.

This is a highly readable, balanced and nuanced account of the life of a controversial figure. John Guy describes Mary Queen of Scots as he finds her: not among the countless pro- and anti-Mary propaganda tracts that have piled up over the centuries, but in the archives and primary sources, some of them not reviewed for many years and some not discovered until Guy came along. If you are willing to suspend preconceived ideas about Mary--saint or sinner, smart or stupid, martyr or manipulator--and allow the hard evidence to outweigh the speculation, you will be swept along by Guy's prose and enjoy a thoroughly fascinating story.

Though I have been a lifelong fan of Elizabeth I and have absorbed Tudor history like a sponge, my interest in history truly began when I read a novel about Mary Stuart as a teenager. My impression of her then is something that remained years later: an interesting but very flawed woman for whom I felt sympathy but very little respect or appreciation. My reading of Fraser's biography did little to change this perspective, though I don't mean any disrespect towards Fraser - it's still a good biography.I recently decided to re-read Fraser's book along with several other texts about Mary. After having done so, I have to say that I recommend this book hands down. Guy clearly empathizes with and is a fan of Mary Stuart (though this doesn't mean he's unwilling to point out her flaws), and what's more is that he endeavors to show that much of the story about Mary isn't quite correct. Many who have written about her seem to wish to have it both ways: they consider her to be a shrewd, plotting, calculating woman engaged in an affair while planning the downfall of her husband, yet simultaneously a less-than-astute woman wholly unfit to rule. The truth is somewhere in between, it seems. She made some shrewd decisions that demonstrated her adaptability and made many abysmal choices (particularly with regard to the men she trusted). She ruled with the heart at times---- but even my studies of Elizabeth I had long proven that she did so herself, as have many rulers male and female. Most importantly, this work draws in additional study of Cecil's actions and, moving beyond mere conjecture, Guy is able to connect some dots with the casket letters proving that Cecil very clearly had an agenda against Mary, one he had enacted well before she even returned to Scotland, and one that had a heavy hand in her downfall. A final note for readers is that, while Cecil clearly does not come out looking positive (though arguably, what he did was to protect his vision of England; it's the sort of plotting many engaged in), Elizabeth I herself is not viewed particularly harshly. I've noticed that many readers share an interest in both women and often react very strongly when Elizabeth is viewed dimly in any work. This is not really the case here.Guy's work is balanced, interesting, detail-rich and a pleasure to read start to finish. I highly recommend it even if you feel you've read almost all there is to read about Mary already.

This was not the easiest read in the world, but it was a very objective account of the life of Mary Stuart. Mary Stuart's story is complicated, but important for both the history of France, (she was married to Francois II, the king of France during his brief reign of 555 days,) She was Queen of Scotland from her infancy, and many would argue, the rightful heir to the throne of England. She was also 5'11" tall - quite extraordinary for the time. Her son eventually became the king of England, and every heir to the English throne after him, can trace back to her. She is an important person in history, and I recommend starting your study of her, with this book.

Reread this in preparation for a trip to Scotland where we'll visit many places connected with Mary. She's one of the most tragic monarchs whose bios I've read. Although she didn't become the Queen of England, her son succeeded Elizabeth I and all subsequent British monarchs descended from her.The book is very well researched and detailed. Having the ability to visualize the events that occurred in various castles and palaces will make my travels more meaningful. RIP Marie

This is a very thorough and readable biography about Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. It explores the historical circumstances which guided many of her decisions, and the people who either supported, opposed or manipulated her. She was beautiful and spoiled but also had health issues which impacted her performance. There is also information about her conflicts with John Knox, the preacher. It does not have footnotes so is readable for the non-scholar. Guy is a little biased toward her, but that is forgiveable.

Overall, this is an engaging read. It provides a good and thorough look at some of the intricacies of Mary's life and how she ended as she did. At times, it is a bit harder to keep track of all the different nobles running about, and it would be interesting to see what sorts of counterpoint-depictions there are to William Cecil, as this author makes him to be quite the villain, but otherwise I would recommend this as a good and fair read of the unfortunate Mary, Queen of Scots.

Very difficult to read. Our book club took it on and a number of us didn’t finish it. I look forward to seeing the upcoming film because, while I respect the scholarship and expertise behind the making of the book, I think it will be more engaging on the screen.

The Wonderful Things You Will Be, by Emily Winfield Martin

From School Library Journal

PreS—Childhood is a time full of potential, and Martin celebrates this promise in this work. The general premise of Dr. Seuss's classic, Oh, The Places You'll Go is pared down to elegant simplicity. "Will you stand up for good/By saving the day?/Or play a song only you/Know how to play?" While the rhyming text falters a bit in spots, the word choice overall is spare, inspiring, and accessible to preschoolers. Children are encouraged to be kind, clever, and bold, to take care of the small, and to help things grow. Martin's oil paintings have the same retro, mid-century feel as her other illustrations, with large-eyed children of many ethnicities playing, gardening, and sharing together. VERDICT A go-to gift for new parents, and a potential bedtime favorite for many children.—Martha Link Yesowitch, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, NC

Love this book, great story and made me teary as I was waiting for my little one to be born. I used this book as the sign in at my baby shower. It even has a page where it says "this book belongs to:". Now my baby boy has a great story book signed by all his friends and family for him to cherish forever.

Even though I loved the artwork I previewed, I was a bit hesitant to buy this book because my daughter has a rare chromosome disorder that may immensely impact her life... to the point where she may not walk, talk, or be a functional, independent adult. I was afraid this book would focus on "the wonderful things you will be," as in particular careers, activities, or things that required a lot of ability. Much to my delight, this book instead focuses less on specific activities and more on being kind, loving, adventurous, creative--things my daughter could still be, despite any limitations and obstacles she may face. This book emphasizes being UNIQUE, not necessarily being "able." I really appreciate that. This book makes me cry because I don't know what will happen to my daughter (nobody does--because her condition is so rare), but I love her and she is wonderful, and this book lets her know that!

I loved this book!! It is beautifully written and illustrated. The story is sweet and simple and easy to read. I also own this author's other books "Dream Animals" and "Day Dreamers" and I like this third book MORE than the first two. I think that this would be the perfect book to give as a gift for a baby shower or a first (or second/third) birthday gift. My son is 5 and he loved it. After reading it we talked about all of the things he wanted to be when he grows up. One awesome thing I noticed in this book is how gender neutral it is. There are both boys and girls depicted in the book, but it is a boy having the tea party, a boy using the sewing machine, a girl on the tree swing, and a girl as a superhero. I love how the author didn't stick to awful stereotypes of boys being super heroes and girls being princesses. This is one of the first children's books I've ever seen that shows the REALITY of little kids....that boys and girls do all sorts of similar things. You will NOT be disappointed with this book. Highly recommend!

Purchased this book as a "card" for a baby shower gift from a group. The book can have many meanings and fit mostly any child. I found it perfect to give to a new baby. I'm sure it's parents will love to read this one to their new little one!

Great for all ages! My 3.5mo loves it when I read "The Wonderful Things You Will Be" to him! From cover to cover, this story is amazing and the artwork is beautiful! Highly recommended!

There are a great many positive, self-affirming messages in this beautiful book for youngsters to soak in - nice little antidote against some of the other messages out there that children are exposed to! Sometimes, I feel a little fearful when I think of how children can't help but be exposed to the negative influences in the world at much younger ages than ever before, no matter how much we try to protect them. At the same time, there are so many BEAUTIFUL and good influences in the world as well, like this book, and I truly believe that keeping a steady diet of healthy, positive "mind food" going into a youngster's brain can go a long way in equipping them to counteract the junk that creeps in from time to time. This precious book is such a great tool to help them begin... soft illustrations complementing simple words, a book that encourages a youngster to use his/her imagination and think of all of the possibilities in answering the age old question adults pose to them, "So... what do you want to be when you grow up?" There are SO many things I like about it. Many of the children's books we've accumulated over the years for our grandchildren go into possible occupations - but life is so much more than occupations, isn't it? "Who" you become is so much more than that, and the pages reflect that sentiment with deeper questions, one of my favorites being, "Will you tell a story that only you know?"You'll find that so many of the pages contain encouraging and supportive statements of belief in a child's capabilities, i.e. "I know you'll be..." (kind/clever/bold/brave/bright), with the last page assuring him/her "And I'll love you, whoever you've grown up to be." I really believe books like this can be so instrumental in promoting a good self-image, as a child's rapidly developing mind soaks in positive messages. Think youngsters will especially enjoy a 2-page spread toward the back that has flaps opening up into a full 4-page spread, with children dressed in various Halloweenish-looking costumes (isn't that what they're actually doing while they're tricking-or-treating... an early testing out imaginative possibilities?), and the diversity of the children depicted is a nice plus.I doubt there's a parent or grandparent out there who hasn't gazed at the face of a newborn cradled in their arms and not dreamed of "the wonderful things you will be"? At our Christmas gathering this year, it was so terrific for my husband and I to look at all of those beautiful little faces and think about the wonderful things they will all be! This was one of the gifts for our 2+ year old grandson, but I know his two older brothers will enjoy it as well, along with his baby sister one day.
