I knew a story by Ms. Pope would bring on tears and end happily, but I didn't realise the different depths of emotions that I would experience. Sunny and Julian...once they meet, the path is set for them to go on a journey of discovery together...and a journey of love. Heartbreak, family, friends, mental illness and strength are all captured in these pages. The mystery of Sunny's mother leaves you rooting for the beautiful soul that is Sunny while also hoping for healing and closure. Julian has his own obstacles, but without a doubt, the softening of him because of having Sunny in his life can be felt. I loved this novel. I can't wait for the next story! 💜

This book was so good, it had everything I long for in a book, laughter, happiness, some sadness and amazing chemistry between characters. The characters had such depth to them they felt real and had you rooting for them by the end!! Love Jamie Pope books!!

I loved this book. Sunny and Julian are great complexes characters that will make you root for a happy ending. Great story Jamie! I can't wait to read the next book.

Wonderful book!! Loved the characters and storyline. I was sad that the book was over. I could have kept reading for many more chapters. I highly recommend Mostly Sunny.

Great read. I have read other books by this author and once again she did not disappoint. Look forward to the next one

Love this author.

Mostly Sunny by Jamie PopeSunny Gibson was abandoned by her mentally ill mother when she was just a child. Raised in the foster care system, she has found meaning in her life by working as a social worker. But when she suspects her newest charge might be related to her, she is determined to find the child’s mother. But for that she needs an attorney.Julian King is a high-powered lawyer who knows nothing of family law. A former pro football player, he is determined to prove himself at his firm and make partner. He wants nothing to do with Sunny and her pro-bono case.Of course, Sunny and Julian end up working together and they are drawn close to each other and discover they have some surprisingly similar experiences.Mostly, this is a sweet romance. At first, Julian was rather unlikable but as his attraction to Sunny grew, he became a different person and the relationship and the reading became more enjoyable. The novel’s pace was a bit slow and at times it was difficult to engage with the search for the mysterious and elusive mother.Overall, this was a pleasant read and I would recommend it to those wanting a light, sweet romance. 3 stars.I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Sunny is now a social worker with a passion for helping children. Once she turned 18 and started studying she has dedicated her whole life to helping others. For Sunny this is personal as when she was a child, she grew up in an unstable home with a mother who had mental health issues. When she was little, her mother abandoned her and Sunny was found hiding in the closet by some friendly Police Officers. From there, Sunny was put into foster care and eventually found a great home where she lived until her foster mother passed away. Sunny has found herself attached and heavily invested in a little girl Grace's care. Grace reminds Sunny a lot of herself and has finally found a loving home with a mother who wants to adopt her. The thing is though that Grace's birth mother has tracked her down and is sending money and letters telling Grace that she will be back for her and telling her to foster mother thank you for looking after her little girl. Sunny becomes actively involved and gets the idea in her head that Grace may be her long-lost sister as like her Grace calls her Mum - Mama, and her parents were mixed race. Sunny employs the help of top rising attorney Julian King and in doing so will show Julian what it is to love one another sincerely and that underneath all the hardness he can still enjoy true romance, and that love does not have to act like a business transaction. I have to admit I had high hopes for the book and felt a bit disappointed with the ending and had imagined it taking a different turn. I do hope that we get more of Sunny's story and that we find out what happened to her mother once and for all, as seems like she had fallen off the face of the earth.

"Undoubtedly Virginia WoolfÂ’s most intense and one of the most singular (novels) of our era."--Jorge Luis BorgesBegun as a "joke," Orlando is Virginia Woolf's fantastical biography of a poet who first appears as a sixteen-year-old boy at the court of Elizabeth I, and is left at the novel's end a married woman in the year 1928. I'll often buy a premium kindle edition of a book that I could otherwise get for a much cheaper price, to get a well-designed reading experience, paragraphs that look like paragraphs, and perhaps some useful scholarship in introductions and annotations. Generally I'm trying to avoid the kind of type layout where there is a blank line between non-indented paragraphs, which is very common in free editions. Hack-job introductions are also a turn-off.I bought the Harcourt/Harvest kindle edtion of "Orlando", edited by Mark Hussey, about three years ago, and I'm reading it now. It has way too many typos. There are dozens of times when "tl" becomes "d", so "title" becomes "tide", etc. Disappointing in what should be a quality edition. OCR with shoddy QC, perhaps.Others have complained that the footnotes are not tied to the text. That's true, but it doesn't bother me much, since I just finished reading the Penguin Deluxe "Les Miserables", which did the same thing in a physical (non-kindle) book. Avoiding the intrusiveness of a bunch of superscripted endnotes: to me, that's a reasonable design choice.Overall, this kindle edition of "Orlando" isn't really worth paying extra for, so I would recommend rummaging around among the cheaper editions before buying this one.

The most brilliant portrayal of a transsexual experience in modern history. Even when Magnus Hirshfield was publishing his treatise on the transsexual phenomenah, Woolf relates an account of the intracies of gender identity undiscovered by social scientists and biologists. Published in 1928, Orlando has been billed as one of Woolf's best imaginative works however, such criticism was never seen in the light of reality but a surreal depiction of the writer's portrayal of a young man who wakes up one day as a woman, as if in the ordinary course of his life. As Woolf suggests of her character's reaction to the change "Orlando herself showed no surprise at it.(Woolf, 139. Modern transsexuals have explained only recently in their writings, their internal thinking stays the same, only the external body appears different to others. ALthough Woolf's work set the precedent for post modernist literature, infusing elements of fiction into biography, she weaves the internal stuggle of her former lover, Vita Sachville-West's life, together with her own perceptions of gender and sexuality, with an historical account of a young transsexual aristocrat's adventures over the span of centuries. Unlike a biography of her time, the action is secondary to the internal story. This is more of an account of how her lover (and as suggested by this author--Woolf herself), struggles with her own gender identity; a thinking so similar to transsexualism and conflict with a Eurocentric binary gender system. Here, the biographer (narrator) describes: the reaction to Orlando's change of sex, as it may appear in a scientific journal today;"[b]ut in every other respect, Orlando remained preceisely as he had been. The change of sex, though it altered their future, did nothing whatever to alter their identity. (Woolf, 138). Woolf captures the failure of the general public to grasp the concept of gender reassignment when she has the narrator express dismay in the lack of Orlando's reaction where "Orlando was a man till the age of thirty (Similar to our understanding of modern transsexuals who start their transition at middle age) when he became a woman and has remained ever since." (Woolf, 139)'. Woolfe's use of metaphor and foreshadowing is uncanny. The pyrotechnic displays prior to the deep sleep of Orlando depicts change. She puts Orlando on a ship called the 'Enamoured Lady,' and she is suddenly the object of the Captain's and other males' attention and realizes that the sexual fantacies of men creates a dillemma for her as a woman, where she must sheild her own desires as a woman. Woolfe precisely proclaims that '(Orlando) remembered how, as a young man, she had insisted that women must be obedient, chaste, scented, and exquisitely apparelled... (and) "Now I shall have to pay in my own person for those desires ... for women are not (judging by my own short experience of the sex) obedient, chaste, scented, and exquisitely apparelled by nature." Woolfe does not stop at her proclivity to undress Orlando's gender identity but lays bare the confusion of sexual preference. Although a woman herself, Orlando proclaims that "it was still a woman she loved; and if the consciousness of being of the same sex had any effect at all, it was to quicken and deepen those feeling which she had had as a man." (Woolf, 161). Where she gives in to sensual thoughts of a man, the Captain on whose arm she trembles and remembers that she had once been a Duke and Ambassador, "that she, who had been lapped like a lily in folds of paduasoy, had hacked heads off, and lain with loose women amoung treasure sacks in holds of pirate ships..." Woolfe reveals a metaphoric character, the Archduchess Harriet Griselda of Finster-Aarhorn and Scan-op-Boom in the Roumanian territory, seen in chapter three as a woman, and in a later chapter is shown to be a man, the Archduke, who suddently professes his love for her. Woolfe's ability to produce a character like the Arduke Harry who today would fall somewhere on the transgendered scale, is amazing, for a woman in her time. Yet through all its carefully crafted language and delightful parody, the gender message she professes is much the same today as it may have been then, that "Clothes ... change our view of the world and the world's view of us...." Orlando challenges the Eurocentric binary gender construct of the world she lived in. Here, the writer's own indictment of the unrealistic bounds placed on women is evident and transposed by her narrator and Orlando's own expository reflections, "In every human bing a vacillation from one sex to the other takes place, and often it is only that clothes that keep the male or female likeness, while underneath the sex is the very opposite of what it is above." (Woolfe, 189). Here, Woolfe appears to challenge more than the unfairness and imperfections of gender traditions on women. She uses comparaisons of the formalities of being a nieteenth century man and woman to make her point. Additionally, the most introspective journey in Orlando, is of a person who is not questioning her own gender identity, but defining it. Woolfe appears to depict, not confusion, but knowledge by the transsexual main character of her own identity, and chosing to adapt to it by changing the way the world looks at her, by changing sex. It is the world that suffers the confusion. Woolfe makes generalities about other persons hiding their sex in the clothing of the other gender, suggesting there are numerous persons in her era that suffer from some sort of gender dysphoria. After reading Orlando, and comparing it with the writings of transsexual, transgendered and social scientists,Woolfe describes so clearly the struggle a transgendered person experiences, that critics should look more closely at this writing. Woolfe's narrator states: "Of complications and confusions which thus result every one has had experience;" and as though afraid to delve deeper, she leaves this general question to "note only the odd effect it had in the particualr case of Orlando herself." As Woolfe so eloquently portrays the posttranssexual eptiome, "having now worn skirts for a considerable time, a certain change was visible in Orlando, which is to be found even in her face..." and where the narrator wonders, had both the man and woman of Orlando's time.worn the same clothes (in other words, different sexes but same gender) it is possible their outlook may have been the same too." (Woolfe, 188). Yet the most profound statement made in the text reveals Woolfe's secret exposition: "The difference between the sexes is, happily, one of great profundity. Clothes are but a symbol of soemthing hid deep beneath. It was a change in Orlando herself that dicated her choise of a woman's dress and of a woman's sex. And perhaps in this she was only exprssing rather than mor openly than usual---openness indeed was the soul of her nature---(Woolf, 189). Thus, Woolfe explains that Orlando chose to change his sex because he was in fact a woman, a woman's soul in a man's body. This book is highly recommended to all who are ever wonder what it is like for a transsexual to alter his sex, and begin living as the gender opposite of his or her sex. And for those who never wondered, it is a great read, full of insightful commentary on the possibility of a gender continuum and expanding the boundaries of a binary gender system of a phallocentric society.

THIS VERSION IS BS!!! warning anyone who is reading this for school: this reprint does not include the correct copyright, the pictures, or the index. But it is appalling the lack of actual GRAMMAR AND FORMATTING. The random capitalizations, @ signs, dashes, spacing, and shortening of names to "Mr. X, Mrs. O, Lord M." It literally looks like Amazon told someone to word for word type this book up, they did a TERRIBLE job, and nobody double checked their version of Woolf's writing. Absolutely heinous read because somebody somewhere decide to rip off the copyright by publishing a subpar version (probably in violation of the copyright). Also when my teacher was reading quotes from his authentic copy, some of the words don't match so WAY TO GO YOU CREATED A DOLLAR STORE SHIT VERSION OF A TEDIOUS BUT CLASSIC NOVEL. If I get marked down for incorrect quoting in my essay because Amazon sells a far inferior (possibly illegal) version, you'll be hearing from me again.

I admit I went into this novel with some pre conceived thoughts about Orlando. The synopsis on various sites really doesn't do the book justice. I'd read To The Lighthouse prior to this novel and I admit I was somewhat prejudiced. To say I was surprised by Orlando is an understatment. The concept, the style and prose was for this reader an eye opener. Prose that I could fall into and savour.I'm rating it highly because of it's uniqueness and it is a book that you can not be ambivalent about. To me that is what reading is all about.

If you have an interest in witnessing the perfect use of the English language in narrative, anything written by Woolf will do and Orlando is not exception although it is an atypical Woolf work. It is an interesting mix of humor and serious comments on maleness and femaleness, English class history, and insider jokes some of which require a knowledge of Woolf's personal relationships. It helped me to have finished a recent biography of Virginia Woolf to better understand her work generally and especially this one.

I just finished reading Bonnie Zieman’s memoir, Fading Out of the JW Cult, and I would highly recommend this book. What makes her story so special is that the protagonist is an experienced psychotherapist. While sharing her story, she explains the psychological manipulation at play in trying to shape her personality. In my opinion, Bonnie’s 2016 memoir is a must-read book for anyone who wants to understand how the Watchtower (intentionally) and family (mostly well-intentioned) manipulates children and teenagers of Jehovah’s Witnesses. If David Letterman was reviewing Bonnie’s memoir on his Late Night Show, he would normally present ten reasons for why the public should read her book. But because we have familial and non-familial (a cult) at play unduly influencing Bonnie, I have decided to enlarge the list to fifteen, which are from 15 to one:15. You will get to meet Bonnie’s paternal grandfather, who was the epitome of a true believer, putting his three young sons in an orphanage so he could proselytize the teachings of Charles Taze Russell in eastern Canada. Not a good omen for Bonnie’s father (familial) and his potential parenting skills14. If you did not already know it, Canadian Watchtower executives do love their body massages as Bonnie’s young, naïve massage therapist mother discovered.13. Believe it or not, Armageddon was just around the corner in 1941, but Bonnie’s parents ignored Judge Rutherford’s warnings not to marry or have children because the end was so close. You will be delighted to learn how they chose to spend their time, instead of preaching doom-and-gloom for non-JW believers at Armageddon.12. Bribing Bonnie with six sticks of grape gum, then just a very little girl, to go out in the Watchtower Street work will leave you wondering, “What was her mama thinking?”11. Bonnie’s mom could have easily been an accessory to a major crime. But with a little luck, and not Jehovah’s invisible hand, “being lucky” saves the day.10. The story of Bonnie’s childhood friend, Bobby, will tear at your heart strings, an experience that proved to be a significant coming-of-age wake-up call for her.9. Bonnie’s baptism experience is an indictment of Watchtower’s blatant use of undue influence on children by JW parents. You will love Bonnie’s mom, but not on this occasion, although it’s really Watchtower’s psychological manipulation.8. If you think that you can trust good JW young men to behave on dates, one chapter in her book will definitely change your mind.7. In a chapter called The Slap, Bonnie and her father awaken to the reality that dysfunction is a major bi-product of Watchtower’s culture, although neither of them knew it at the time; the invisible hand of Watchtower at work.6. A chapter about Bonnie getting married ‘properly’ according to a died-in-the-wool JW elder in her husband’s family could only happen in JW La-la Land.5. If you have the misguided belief that Watchtower leaders are all kind, loving and benevolent, Bonnie describes a dinner scene with a circuit oversee that should jolt you to your senses. Unfortunately, behind-the scenes behavior like this are not that uncommon because of the nature of Watchtower’s pyramid-like culture.4. If you think Watchtower’s long-time VP, Fred Franz, was not crazy, Bonnie will set you straight several times in her book. Fred Franz, I believe, was plighted with a severe case of Asperger’s Syndrome, and he was allowed to set policy and prophesy future events for Watchtower without any accountability.3. When a person leaves Watchtower, he or she must be prepared to negotiate a long and challenging learning curve if they want to find and claim their authentic identity. Bonnie’s book is an excellent roadmap to show readers how it can be done in spite of massive amounts of misinformation and emotional abuse.2. For me personally, the total lack of human feelings and emotions (the cult identity) by hard-core true-believing JWs is brought home to roost in chapter 36. While reading this chapter, I was reminded that anyone who chooses to attend and confess at a JW Judicial Committee Meeting should never go alone. A good attorney and someone from the press should be there with them, although if those were the conditions, it could mean the Waterloo for these kinds of Watchtower-style kangaroo courts and sinister undue influence.1. In Chapter 2, Bonnie tells the story about The Gift, a talk delivered by a District Overseer at a 1978 Montreal convention. It was an unplanned gift, that had it been filmed live and preserved, it would have brought Watchtower to its knees and shown the public how Watchtower psychologically manipulates its members. You can read all about “the gift” and much more in Bonnie Zieman’s excellent memoir, Fading Out of the JW Cult.

What a great memoir! Not only was it a story of her life but, Ms. Zieman also included her training as a therapist in this book. It helped me with some guilt I didn't even realize I had from leaving the JW cult. Thank you Bonnie!

I was never a babtized witness but was raised as one. Virtually my whole family is a Jehovah's Witness , and this book truly describes the guilt and brainwashing one endures. As an adult, I sometimes thought about studying and becoming a witness like the rest of my family, as like you said, once your indoctrinated, it is hard to ever put out of your mind. However, this nagging, deep within my heart, could never let me be secure in my decision and instead raised mariads of questions that could never be answered. However, always feeling like I never had enough knowledge of the "truth" still made me want to learn more and see where the witnesses and my family have the practices they have and if they really are from the Bible. This so-called religion has always been a large dark cloud over me. I was so glad I never became a babtized witness! This book is a true eye opener and shows that my feelings are perfectly normal, and the questions I have always had, now have some answers. Thank you for this amazing book.

It was very instructive about JW history and deeply personal about the difficulties of being raised as a JW.

I, too, was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. This is truly a journey of healing, mind, body, soul, and yes, life. Freedom to use the gift that all of us were given, choice, freedom to decide what we want to do! Every day! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with others who have also lost family and friends through unnatural family shunning.

From the moment I started reading I was 100% captivated! What a fascinating and disturbing memoir! I found that I could relate to your life story in so many ways. I appreciate your honesty and willingness to share your story... a story that will help so many of us survivors feel not so alone :)Thank you Bonnie for your bravery!Daisy

Being raised in a jw. Home. Born in. This book helped me see all of the cult feelings I thought it had but was to afraid to say. Thank you Bonnie for sharing.

Amazing story of a brave woman.

This information could save you thousands of dollars! Through personal experience, I already knew that red light therapy was useful. I had received LLLT cold laser treatments that helped me regain the use of my arm after a long period of debilitating pain in my shoulder. My story: Chronic shoulder pain following an attack of shingles caused my shoulder to freeze up and I literally could not lift my arm for a year. The slightest movement would send excruciating pain through my shoulder, I could not stand, sit, walk or lay down without being in pain. After the first few weeks of this chronic pain my rotator cuff muscles atrophied. I'm not a big fan of over-the-counter pain relievers, since I know they can damage your organs and are not good to take constantly on a long-term basis. And pain relievers don't heal your problem either. I tried physical therapy and Chiropractic, ice packs, heat packs but nothing made a dent in the pain until I tried low level laser therapy (cold laser treatments). I went to a laser therapist suggested by a friend and after the first treatment I got some incredible relief - like my body forgot about the nagging stabbing pain when trying to lift my arm and gave me a break for a bit. I returned for many laser sessions which I attribute to finally healing my shoulder and regaining the ability to use my arm. It helped relieve pain, allowing me to move and start to regain muscle. However laser treatments are expensive - about $100 an hour for my therapist, and I could not afford to go regularly since I had been underemployed from the disability. Then I learned through Ari Whitten’s Energy Blueprint Program that red light therapy could be done effectively in other ways using red LED panels; that I could get a home device that I could regularly use for the same purpose as the laser treatments I was getting. What's more, Ari had looked at all the scientific research and tested out lots of devices and determined which ones actually work to deliver the results that research talks about. This new book on red light therapy is comprehensive. It not only outlines the scientific research that shows red light is beneficial and healing to the human body, but gives you practical instruction on how to evaluate the effectiveness of a device, how to use the light to get various benefits, and be time efficient doing red light treatments on yourself. He also recommends powerful and effective devices that are affordable and lets you know where to get them.If you have any interest in red light therapy this is the book to get!

Disappointed with the book. It felt like he was selling multiple products. He only focused on LED and LED products. I was able to create my own infrared red light therapy with incandescent bulbs. It is definitely a heat lamp but have had wonderful results from the skin to back issues. Can not get over how great my skin looks and my ugly age spots disappearing! I was hoping this book would give me more insight to what you can and can not do and the amount of time that should and should not be spent. He only addressed LED. Again it felt like I needed to spend a lot more then I needed to achieve the same results. I spent $84 on RubyLux lights and about $48 on brooder lights to have a full body coverage. Friends and family have noticed the changes and are now coming over and using my set up! Hello they can make their own! Hahahaha

I just finished reading the kindle version of this book and realized I needed the paperback also to more easily bookmark and refer back to it. Ari has done a great job of summarizing the science behind red light therapy. No pseudoscience, data cherry picking or BS here. He's also gone to the trouble and expense of testing many of the red light therapy devices out there and has shared his best picks for home use units. You can get a great, highly effective device for under $500 which is less than you'd pay for a few in clinic sessions. Also included are detailed directions for proper dosing which is VERY important - more is not better with this therapy, just a few minutes a day are all that's needed if you buy a properly powered device. If you're curious about the benefits of red light therapy and how to use it, you need this book!

Who knew that near infrared light could heal joints, improve thyroid function, improve wound healing, improve brain function, heighten physical performance, lose fat, and make you look younger, and that's just for starters?? Very comprehensive book on the benefits and contraindications of this type of light therapy. There's enough science presented to satisfy the science nerd and cause my eyes to glaze over, but easy enough to understand that I couldn't put it down for the thrill of learning about so many amazing benefits from a device that's actually affordable. Not only does the book cover the benefits of the red light therapy but also gives dosing recommendations for the various conditions you may want to treat. Discusses recommended devices and also what to look for in a lamp and how to test it, if one chooses to ignore the recommendations. There's also a FAQ at the end for all the various nuances and questions that one may have.

So excited to read this book. I have been doing red light therapy for about 6 months. I do hard workouts and get fast healing of sore muscles with the therapy. I am excited to learn about he other benefits and uses for red light therapy. Ari Whitten has introduced me to many health changing strategies. His pod cast is awesome.8 months post use : Love my red light. This book really helped be to understand the benefits and how to best use my light. I have a Joove. Will use this everyday going forward. Does wonders for energy and skin. I have the combo red and infra-red to get the most bang. If you want the real low down on red light therapy read this book. There are copies floating around. Whats up with that Amazon?

This is a wonderful book and you can geek out on all of the great information that is presented. But you don't need to be a geek to get it. Ari writes so the non scientific can understand the benefits of red light therapy. He tells you everything you need to know and his references are solid. Want to know how your mitochondria benefit from red light? It is in the book. Want to know which lights are best for which situation, its in the book. This is a proven therapy used for many issues and one could spend hours trying to sort out solid information. Ari has put all together in one book.
