I read Moby-Dick several times in college almost forty years ago. Now I'm taking a night class and reading it with life experience of forty years. Awe is the feeling that constantly gets evoked as I read. Why awe?Capacious. That is the word that repeats again and again in my head. Moby-Dick is a vibrantly colored hot air balloon that keeps growing in size as I read it. First, Melville's subject is the sperm whale, the largest creature on earth. But we don't just learn about the sperm whale but about all whales. Then we learn about whaling and its nobility. Here is where it gets very interesting. We participate in whaling, its skill, equipment, courage, risks and economy AND about how it results in the gruesome destruction of the whale. We feel the horror inflicted on the whales and we feel the nobility of the activity that slaughters them. Melville doesn't allow us to avert our eyes either to the daring of whaling or to the viciousness of the slaughter. That is where the book inflates even more because he holds both perspectives equally which is a much larger place than if he had taken sides. The book also foreshadows modernism by using a variety of narrative techniques; theater, pure narration, encyclopedic explanations and subjective interior monologues. Melville is constantly breaking up the narrative with omniscient recitations of fascinating information about his subject matter. And like Ulysses or the Waste Land, he piles on the reference to Shakespeare, the Greeks, Christianity and the Hebrew traditions. There are many references with regard to Ahab and the Whale regarding evil and Satan. Yet Ahab has great respect and reverence for Moby Dick. Ahab himself knows he is obsessed and but can have great compassion like his feelings for the lowly addled Pip. So yes there is evil afoot in the book but it isn't the kind that that creates simple polar opposites. As Ahab describes Moby-Dick (has) `an inscrutable malice sinewing through it' that describe the book as well. There is evil and there is also goodness that coexists in the book making the reader feel that he has to take sides. If the reader resists this temptation he or she will experience the awe of a deep and ever expanding mystery.

"Moby-Dick," the Third Norton Critical Edition edited by Hershel Parker, the foremost Melville scholar, is a leviathan of a Melvillean treat and brings Melville into the 21st century. Melville wrote in "White Jacket..." " the books that prove most agreeable, grateful and companionable are those we pick up by chance here and there... those that pretend to little, but bound by much." There is so much added to this superb third edition of "Moby-Dick," including the splendid portrait of Ahab on the cover by Oleg Dobrovolski. In the well-written preface, Hershel Parker clearly indicates how the different Norton editions published in 1967, 2001 and 2017 addresses the times and issues of their publication dates. Parker describes why Melville means so much more to us today then he did to his contemporaries and how our vision of Melville has changed from 1967 such as global warming, the extinction of species and human overpopulation. Parker mentioned that Chapter 105 "... Will He Perish?" of Moby-Dick" is read differently today. No longer do we believe as Melville did "we account the whale immortal in his species."Of course the book contains the authoritative text pioneered by Parker and Harrison Hayford. In this case with numerous added notes. Then Hershel Parker has written a new chapter, "Glimpses of a Melville as a Performer." This section clearly shows the talented Melville as a debater, actor, raconteur, lecturer and a master storyteller thru the eyes of his contemporaries. One of my favorite chapters that appears in all editions deals with whaling and whale craft with nautical terms and the well-illustrated whaling industry section. There is so much new and important material in this third edition. Highly recommended is reading the "Melville Revival 1879-1927."In conclusion it was exciting to read the new rich material in this third edition. Anyone interested in Melville, "Moby-Dick" or reading this classic piece of literature for the first time, needs to have this latest edition on his or her bookshelf. The essays at the end by some of the outstanding Melville scholars are an enriching experience. Walter Bezanson, Harrison Hayford, Greil Marcus, Timothy Marr, Mary K. Bercaw Edwards, Wyn Kelley, Robert K. Wallace, Jonathan Letham and Robert Payne takes us on a voyage and comprehensively bring "Moby-Dick" into the 21st century by addressing the present generation. They cover such "Moby-Dick" topics as the character of Ishmael; the reading and rereading of the book; the "Moby-Dick" in popular culture; the surprising proliferation of "Moby-Dick" public reading marathons; its influence in the arts and even a discussion of the song of whales. This is truly a "mighty book" on "Moby-Dick." When you read this volume, you will have a whale of a time!

I tried. I really tried. Multiple times. But the page after page describing all the different types of whales in the most minute of detail, and the sentences that stretch so long that by the end of them I'd realize I couldn't figure out for the life of me what point he was trying to make. I finally decided life is to short to torture myself with a book I'm just not enjoying, and I moved on. Maybe I'll try again in another 10 years.

A very enjoyable listen. Well narrated and takes a long time to get through, my two main requirements for an audiobook :). I tried reading this when I was young (luckily never given it as an assignment) and it is a tough read. Herman Melville was a master of the poetic phrase and it is beautiful to listen to but a trudge to read imho. A true American classic of the dangers of revenge and mob mentality. It also provides a time-machine like glimpse into the powerful American whaling industry and once again demonstrates the American concept (for good or bad) that whatever the world does we will outstrip it. I was especially pleased with the authors (narrators) view on the belief that mankind could never kill enough whales to endanger their numbers in the ocean and provides an interesting analogy separating their killing from the American Buffalo. Sadly, little did he know of where technology and seafaring were headed just a few decade later. I spent .99 for the kindle book and got the audio for free so I count it as money well spent.

There is also a first volume, "Bear In The Back Seat I," which is equally engrossing. I happened to read the two books out of order, but that didn't ruin my enjoyment of the stories. There is nothing better than reading first-hand accounts of working with nature. The ranger who coauthored these books devoted his life to caring for the bears and many other creatures that inhabit the forests of the southern USA. These books should be required reading for everyone who plans to visit a state or national park. The main lesson thread that runs through each tale is: in the parks and reserves, you will be a guest in the home of some amazing animals, so treat them and their home with respect. Don't feed the animals, don't litter, and don't behave like idiots by approaching them. They are wild, not tame. Admire them from afar, then leave them in peace.

I enjoyed this series of stories about handling animals (and humans) in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Though the author makes light of some of the challenges of managing the animals, particularly bears, there is also a consistent message that the animals normally only become dangerous if they've become accustomed to being fed by humans. Some of the vignettes are humorous, some more serious, but they all seem to be told with authenticity and directness. You get no sense that the author is making this stuff up just to sell books ! In fact, the book does take on a rather documentary quality at times, when I felt a more personalized language, and perhaps some dialogue and quotes, would have made it more appealing and memorable. Some of the interesting passages that I highlighted in my Kindle copy of the book include:"If I had to choose an animal to come back after I die, it would be a river otter. They seem to play all the time."..."we smeared Vaseline on the back of each cub to try to mask any human smell on them. We hoped the mother would wake up and lick the cubs to clean them.""Male bears are naturally programmed to kill every cub they find in an effort to maintain dominance in their territory."

In 1 1/2 hour after entering Yellowstone I watched a parent sending his child closer to a huge moose for pics, men ((15?) Chase buffalo across a field and another group chasing a herd of elk. Kudos to Ranger Jane? Arriving in a cloud of dust sliding sideways across the road between men and elk screaming in her mike GET IN YOUR CARS IMMEDIATELY!! My husband says we're leaving before I have to see someone hurt. .15 minutes later we saw a rescue helicopter coming in. Two more came in the next two hours . (Buffalo gorings ) . We watched Old Faithful and then drove out of the park. A trip we had planned band expected to enjoy ruined almost by humans and shortened to only one day. How sad that otherwise intelligent people can become so stupid. Old Faithful made it up for us by having the biggest blow in years! What power and majesty! I hope people begin to respect our Parks and the rules. By telling way first piece of information handed to us on entry bright orange sheet saying DO NOT CHASE THE BUFFALO. Thanks for a great book ,doing your job protecting us and trying to educate people about safety in our Parks!

Bear in the Back Seat II, was a wonderful read. I live around Bears here in Alaska and they are amazing creatures. Everything written about how to enjoy our bears is true and mostly important, is how to protect the bears from thoughtless humans. It always amazes me how sometimes the worst offenders are the people who know better. #1..... Don't feed the bears. The Ranger in this book brings his world alive and invites you in it and you begin to see that #1 law is the most in important rule to follow. Through this caring Ranger (Kim), you experience the joy and the sorrow of trying to manage a wonderful animal and sometimes us thought humans. Some of the stories are funny and warms your hear, other stories makes you stop and see things differently. You'll begin to appreciate all of are Wildlife Rangers and the dangers they encounter to protect us and the Wildlife. This is a great read and I am sure you will see Wildlife experts as the real Heroes they are.L. Williams

I worked in Yellowstone in the summer of 2000. I didn't have any close encounters with a bear. But walking a boardwalk through the woods, I came upon a mama elk. She was the most beautiful tawny color - like a deer. As I stopped & realized she was way too big for a deer, her head popped up. I was probably 70 yards away & backing up, talking nice to her, when she covered half the distance in the time I'd taken 5 steps back. Trying to remember advice given at orientation I figured I was in store for a hoof beating. Suddenly she turn off the boardwalk & put her head down to apparently check on her calf. I was 54 & didn't run any more, BUT I TURNED TAIL & RAN!!! This book was so interesting as he dealt with the wild animals under his care. Sometimes riveting & sometimes funny. I loved my summer in Yellowstone & after reading this book, I'd like to spend some time in the Smokies & Shenandoah.

Another great read! I purchased both Bear in the Back Seat I & II as Kindle versions. Very rare for me to read a book a second time but I enjoyed these so much I will most likely buy both books in paperback format and read them again! While vacationing in the Great Smoky Mountains, I stopped by the Sugarlands Visitor Center and was told by an employee that there will be a Bear in the Back Seat III. I have not tried to confirm that but I hope so! With 32 years as a ranger in the GSM, Kim DeLozier must have stories to fill 10 books! His passion for his job and love of animals is so admirable. Thanks, Kim for your hard work and dedication to provide quality of life to animals and so many improvements to the park for our lifetime to enjoy and for our children/grandchildren.

This book is a good piece of writing to be read over the holidays for middle or experienced developers. The book is a set of short stories that can be enjoyed in any order. The second part of the book contains almost historic pieces of software from various sources. Some of these examples I would print out and hang on the wall in the office.

This is the kind of book you would find in the bathroom at a programmers house. Short chapters, easy to read, but not elementary by any means. I highly recommend it to any programmer from novice to expert. If you are looking for a dense book on computer theory, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for 2-3 page chapters of life lessons learned by a software engineer, this is the book for you. My favorite part is the last half, which is a compilation of artifacts of the programming world (Ever wondered how Shakespeare would have programmed? What about a baboon? Samples of the Apollo 11 source code). And who knew fairy dust isn't real?

Not a lot of substance.

Interesting set of stories based much on anecdotal events. Not really research based.

I don't read programming books for their literary merit, but as a lover of books in general...c'mon.I want to like this book! I really do. It's just really bad. Grammatical errors abound from page one—strike that—before page one. There's an error in the dedication. The page with the fewest words did not escape this author's ineptitude. Clearly no understanding of commas and what they do and or don't do, the very concept of an appositive, clause dependence, colons, semicolons...I don't want to be mean. Some people are bad at grammar. But half of this book seems to be about meticulously crafting your syntax and seeking out code reviews and the tragic irony of it all gets to be too much. Any editor would've caught half of these problems. Anyone. A tenth grade Language and Composition student barely pulling a C could've glanced at this prose and dished, "yeah, that's a comma splice, dawg."And another thing (boy, I'm really getting worked up)! It's not just that there are many (many!) technical mistakes. The sentence construction is horrible, too. Like, probably-wouldn't-pass-a-high-school-english-class bad. Again, an editor's guiding hand is sorely missing from the outset. There are weird layout and design things (line spacing is the big one) that also immediately caught my eye but they don't matter too much. It's almost like this book was put together by one person who isn't really good at any one thing. Actually, that may be exactly what happened. Which is impressive, really. But not up to snuff. All this is to say, I wrote this after 15 pages because I just couldn't concentrate on the content. The content seems not to be too insightful yet, but there's plenty of book to go and I'm glad to keep an open mind. On the content. Please, Lord, hire an editor for all the other stuff.

I saw “Zero Bugs and Program Faster” at the public library. It caught my attention because the book cover is a maze. In fact, the author invites you to try it. I can't because the library puts stickers on that interfere with the path. But I believe that it works. The book has two halves. One half is 1-4 pages chapters. Most are 2-3 pages so when I hit the four page chapter, it felt long! The stories and analogies are good. I liked the one about programming being like plugging boat holes; it only takes one to sink your boat and the one about encapsulation being like dumping your mess in the closet. There's a great joke about what happens when a programmer encounters a zebra and edge cases.I also like that chapter 1 points out you can learn faster if you learn from the mistakes of others. Each chapter begins with a quote. There are a lot of code diagrams and pictures to keep things interesting. Some chapter shave code examples. Lots of concepts are covered including cyclomatic complexity. A few chapters begin with an exericse to look for certain aspects of the paragraph structure as you read. The second half of the chapter is what appears to be a bunch of random examples. Much of the point of this went over my head.

These step into reading books are so great for my 7 year old.

My son loves this book!

Nice book.

I love this story! It’s an easy biography about the invention of the Ferris Wheel. Would you believe George got the idea as a kid, from a big waterwheel? He grew up, became an architect and builder, but it took the 1892 Chicago World’s Fair to make it happen. The committee wanted something incredible but didn’t believe in George or his idea. George didn’t quit. He funded the project himself, with some help from his friends. When the fair opened, everything was ready, except the cars. They weren’t attached, but when they were, the ride was a huge success…264 feet tall, 2,100 riders at a time! Great job, George! Thanks for your Sky High Ferris Wheel!
