Back in 1986, before the Fiji coups which prevented Indian parties from taking power, Ronald Wright spent a month or so in Fiji and wrote this honest view of what he saw. It is well-written, it is easily-read, and it gives a kind of “one-month-in-Fiji” day by day description of an interesting place. He filled out his travel experience with some decent portions of Fijian history and 20th century politics. Somehow, though, it left this reader feeling a certain lack of depth, probably due to the fact that one month is not long enough to gather enough experience and knowledge to write more convincingly. The most informative and unusual part of the book is the section on Ocean Island or Banaba, a Micronesian island utterly devastated by a British phosphate mining company, whose inhabitants were finally resettled on a Fiji island. However, I fear that bar conversations, a few interviews, a three day walk through interior mountains, imitation of various accents in English, and a description of one’s drinks and meals are not enough. Wright skillfully described virtually every moment of his stay, making the most of every view, every conversation, but…… I’ve got to hand it to the author for giving it a shot in any case. If you ever wanted to know something about Fiji, you could do worse than read his book, but be aware that it’s only an appetizer, not the main meal. And speaking of “main meal”, I thought that he could have left out most of the constant references to former cannibalism, an attempt on his part to “spice up” the book no doubt, but reminiscent of a book on England focusing interminably on fox hunting habits or public hangings.

This was a fun book to read while traveling in Fiji. It provides a great perspective of the history of the islands complete with interesting and sometimes entertaining antecdotes of the author's travels through Fiji. The text alternates between the author's personal travel experiences and a drier (but still interesting) history of Fijian native culture and colonial influences.

This was a smash hit with my almost 4 year old. He wants to read it multiple times in a row, which is rarely the case even with favorite books. I don't mind, since this book is a fun read with great illustrations. In a village where every animal has their own home and vegetable garden, Anansi the spider takes Hyena's magic stick, hoping it will help him get a perfect house without having to do any work. But his attempts at magic just cause problems for the other animals - and his carelessness eventually puts the whole village in danger. In the end, Hyena returns to stem the (literal) tide of trouble, but the whole affair brings some permanent changes to the village.The plot would be familiar to many as "the sorcerer's apprentice". I think many kids would identify with Anansi. He means no harm, but is impulsive, overconfident and not good at considering the outcomes of his actions. There are silly moments that make my son giggle. The bright, colorful illustrations make a giant flood not-so-scary. There is no moralizing or preaching in this book. But does give parents plenty of opportunity to discuss relevant topics: taking what doesn't belong to you, thinking about how your choices impact others, finishing what you start and telling the truth.All and all, this was a great success in our house. A nice change from the usual stories about cars, barn animals and bear families. We will definitely be buying the other books in this series!

This is a fantastic story about a lazy, messy spider whose home is the eye sore of an animal neighborhood. Anansi envies Hyena, who appears to do no work at all, and yet all his house work is completed. His yard is always beautiful; everything seems in perfect order. The mischievous spider shadows Hyena to discover his secret: a magic stick that does its owner's bidding when a special chant is uttered. Greedy Anansi schemes to obtain the magic stick and its power for himself. However, with great power comes great responsibility--as the sneaky spider soon discovers.This beautifully illustrated book captures the fun of the Anansi tale while also teaching the importance of one's personal and social responsibilities. What is very nice in this story is the character of Anansi actually looks like a spider whereas in some children's books, he is shown in a more human-like form.The tale is fun to read out-loud. It echoes the same universal themes as The Sorcerer's Apprentice, and some intriguing lessons might come from comparison / contrasts activities.

We presented this book to the 2nd grade class where we volunteer for the Junior Great Books program, which includes Anansi stories. The boys and girls love the Eric Kimmel versions of the stories, and the illustrations are captivating.

Reading this book, I was reminded intensely of Strega Nona.Of course, this sort of story - a "Sorcerer's Apprentice" or "Why the Sea is Salt" sort of tale, where a magical device gets out of hand and won't stop, is common throughout the world. And now that I've told you THAT you probably have the whole story in your mind already.This version is better than some versions of that story I've seen, but not as good as others (for example, Strega Nona itself). Nor is it as good as other Anansi stories by this author (or possibly others, I'm lacking those right now). If you get it cheap, go for it, but I wouldn't buy it just to have it, this book is not a must-have for every library.

My 4 year old cannot stop talking about this story.

The children at the school I work loves this and the other Anansi books.

We LOVED this book and have read it multiple times.

This is a wonderful and colorful book for classroom reading. I have used it both as a read aloud and as a book for students to enjoy on their own.

Ive been teaching self rescue for 25 years, this is the first book to take a practical, realistic view on what is possible and what is not. The explanations are better, the pics are better and while these techniques will constantly evolve this book is a must have for all Trad climbers.

Good review but needs greater depth to be useful.

Fast Delivery and the book is great!

The flow of the second edition is better because the decision making process is streamlined. If there is an easy way to do something - use it; if not - go to the more complex method. For me, the skills that are described take some study and a bit of practice to get comfortable with. A great way to spend a rainy day at the crags.

I recently dislocated my shoulder on a multipitch and it took 2.5 hours to finally get cell service, all while my arm was dangling uselessly and painfully by my side. I soon realized that the situation could've been worse had I decked when I fell unexpectedly. Climbing is inherently dangerous and it's very important to know what to do when things go wrong. I'm planning on reading and practicing the techniques during my injury time so that when I return to rock in a couple of months, I will feel much more equipped. I've already started it and it's extremely clear and comprehensive.

A great sets of skills to have. This book presente an approach and to eself rescue that you want to be familiar with. Learn and oractice now before you need it

I have to agree with another reader on this about the style of this book.The author uses obfuscation to sound sophisticated. This is exactly what is NOT needed! Self rescue should be simple and the basic points explained first. A more systematic approach explained later after the ground work is covered, not first!!. Introducing new jargon that is purely jargon to get a name is of no use. Terms like 'Technical ledge' = Hanging climber (or rope under tension). Why not say 'hanging climber' instead of making it sound like something else. It's a rope for God's sake. Treat it like one!I personally feel the Author has got so wrapped up in naming a concept that the concept is lost in words. I don't believe in explaining something by trying to name it as something new. Just use the current vernacular - it's easier all round!

They are in no way prepared for what happens next, and neither was I!I don't want to say too much to give anything away, but the only things that annoyed me out of this book were two things. I thought the women characters were written poorly. Although he made the main woman, Beth, smart, he also made her emotionally unstable and a bit of a sexual object, particularly towards the end of the book, which irritated me. I feel like in real life, Beth would have had much more depth and would never do some of the things he had written. I also found some typos, including switching to first person for a couple of sentences instead of third and switching a character's name once. But I dismissed these irritations due to me really enjoying the plot line.Some of the facts sprinkled into the book were fascinating, and I truly hope they are factual and not something he made up, because I am taking them as truth. Yes, I know I can google it but I am too lazy to do that. Most of the book is set far, far underwater and I feel as if I really learned some things about the deep ocean which was fascinating. For example, the most toxic creatures of the world are water creatures! And this is due to the ocean being an older living environment. Let me just nerd out for a bit over this and the other things I have learned while reading this book.Anyway, off to pick up another book by him, and I highly recommend Sphere! You won't guess the ending, and it will definitely leave you thinking.

I enjoy Michael Crichton's books. He always takes the reader into a scientific fantasy world. No different here.The book focused on an underwater discovery. I'm sure other reviews may have revealed the discovery but I'll not. Needless to say, Crichton takes the reader exploring the discovery and the implications. The character development is amazing. Right there with Stephen King.Overall I enjoyed the book. Got lost here and there with the scientific parts. Not being able to imagine the world Crichton creates hurts. That's on me though and not Crichton.

"Sphere" is a suspenseful, intelligent adventure novel that holds up over time and with multiple readings. It offers some of Crichton's most interesting psychological insights and, in my opinion, remains his best work. I highly recommend this book.

This was my first Michael Crichton book and it definitely won't be my last.Packaging 5/5 - No problems with the book once it was deliveredContent 5/5 - Page turner and super easy read!! Book size might be overwhelming but if you're an average reader like me you'll finish it in 2 weeks MAX.

The story is a good one, but the unrelated dialogue and overly descriptive language makes reading it a bit of a chore. It reads like a screenplay with precise descriptions of everything, whether of not it has anything to do with the plot.

I liked this story for many reasons but it is also maybe my least favorite of Crichton’s work. Considering everything else I’ve read of his has been amazing, it’s not saying much. It’s a good read.

This is a very exciting breath-holding story. It is full of surprises and keeps you wanting to keep reading to see what is going to happen next. Even the ending is a surprise. I highly recommend it.

Lon Fuller sets a tense and hair-raising climate, in which the characters will have to play a deadly game in order to choose the one who is going to be killed, because this is the only way they may scape, by eating someone, because the food ran out. Although this book is very interesting, I must say that it is also VERY frightening, and the experience that you will have here will be very similar to the one that those kids from The Blair Witch Project had, the sensation of loss.I study law, and my teacher told to the class that we should all read it, because it also brings a lot of informations about how the justice works, but what will always be reminded by anyone who read this book is the fear that Lon Fuller develops.Lon Fuller isn't Stephen King, but, boy, here he writes something that is poweful and thrilling...

On a very superficial reading of the book, I guess it is possible to classify it as a powerful and frightening thriller. However this is certainly not the purpose of the book. "The Case of the Speluncean Explorers" is a powerful inquiry into the nature of law. These nine new opinions added by Peter Suber compose a rich increment to the original book, keeping the original work of Lon Fuller up to date with the contemporary debates in the philosophy of law.

It's a fantastic account of legal thoughts in fictional form. But I am not sure whether people who are not interested in legal philosopy would like it.

Great beginner book, but hardly worth the $30.00 price tag! I would be a rip-off at $15.00.

The first, the content quality is awful. Pages have half-cut images, poor quality images. The font size is too large so even 100 pages don't contain much information. I'm an advanced Linux user trying to find a book for my friend who is a beginner. After a brief review, I can definitely recommend now to waste your time and money on it.

This book sucks.All the information in it could have been extracted from the Internet. And this is what he did.Do not purchase this book. Absolutely useless.

Super easy to understand. Linux seemed very intimidating to me all these years. But this book makes it less annoying to me and I can now keep up with conversations about it that my colleagues are having, so that's good!

I would have liked some more details in the book and not things like what is an operating system and so on. Then there are some complicated (for a beginner) commands in the middle which seem out of place. The book is very short as well at around 100 pages.

I haven't used linux that much and I still consider myself a beginner, but there wasn't a single thing in this book I didn't already know. For the price of $1 it might be worth the read if you've never ever used linux, but otherwise don't waste your time.

The book goes into a few basic commands. However, this book for the first half of it shows you how to install Linux and what to do after post installation. Moreover, this book does give you a table of essential commands like Man, Dd, and Alias along with a brief but informative description of what the command does. Overall this book could have used alot more content than what was presented.

I bought this manual after having tried over 20 different Linux distros. I wanted to learn more about Linux, especially the file system. This book really isn’t for a true beginner who knows absolutely nothing about Linux. It’s more geared to an intermediate user.
