I "retired" in 2011, but continued to work as a "consultant" until December of 2017. My youngest, worried about my transition to a real retirement and purchased this book for me as a Christmas gift. I read it while enjoying a vacation in late February.It is a quick and easy read, not sure I LEARNED anything I didn't already know...but it helped a great deal in putting things in perspective. It posed reflective questions, which when thoughtful answers were given helped shape a direction, a path for which to follow.When you think about it, it's absurd to think that anyone who had a purposeful career wouldn't thrive in a purposeful retirement...but just as in your career, retirement takes reflection, planning and implementation...Great book...highly recommended...in fact you MAY want to encourage others you know who have recently retired or are planning on retirement soon to purchase as well...great catalyst for thoughtful discussion...
This book is one you don't want to miss if you are planning to retire or even if you have already retired. It puts such a positive spin on this time in your life. I felt energetic and excited about my upcoming retirement.
The motivation to purchase and read: I’m at to the age where one finds themselves looking ahead to retirement. And I had never before read a book on the topic. Decades ago, I read Hyrum Smith’s book on time management and took a lot away from it.This is a good book. There is little magic and some redundancy in chapters and stories that strike the same chords: inactivity and isolation are your enemies. You finally have a chance to do what you love. So before you retire talk to your partner, make a plan together, and be intentional about carrying it out every day. Smith says that he’s especially writing for people who rely on their busy and successful careers for their fulfillment and identity. For them, Smith says, retirement is a very difficult transition. But there are plenty of ways for us to serve others once we’re no longer constrained by the demands of a full time career. Find ways to be busy that are constructive and enjoyable.The book’s value may in fact be its redundancy, because Smith includes similarly-themed stories from people he’s met from all walks of life: corporate America, military America, leaders of faith-based communities. Women and men. The point he succeeds in getting across is that the keys to a fulfilling and enjoyable retirement are common to us all. We may differ in that we have different gifts and interests that we may choose to accentuate in our post-career years, but without a vision, a plan, and the gumption to act on them, the gift of time that retirement brings, will be squandered.
I love the chapter discussion of “organ recital†as I’m 70 and have had enormous health challenges for the past 3 years that I spend a lot of time discussing with others. Mr. Hyrum has humorously given me a “side view†of these behaviors that piques my awareness and makes me want to talk about anything but organs. Thanks!
Really enjoyed reading this book. I am now seven weeks into my retirement, and already doing many of the things Mr. Smith has suggested. However, his easy presentation certainly opened my eyes to many other possibilities. I consider this reading to have been very important and influential to me at this time of my life. I’m in my first month of retirement and felt I needed some help in getting this phase of my life going in the right direction. I’ve always been a planner and a doer so this book was just the inspiration I was looking for.It’s an easy read with short chapters and thought provoking questions at the end of each. I recommend you take the time to think through these and see what your answers are.There was actually nothing new here that I haven’t thought of before but it put some structure around my thoughts.This book was great for me and I would love to have some of my retired friends read it but I’m afraid most of them who would benefit from it are also those who would find fault in the very thought of a self help book.
Hyrum shares with passion counsel for those on the cusp of retirement. His ideas and encouragement can provide a great tool for couples in particular as a launch pad for conversation on their hopes and dreams for retirement. The book is not about finances, as it presumes this issue has been already addressed, rather the focus is on living well in retirement.
