This is a great book on forecasting oracle performance. I had been tasked with capacity planning work before; I wish I had read this book before undertaking those kinds of work. The book starts with explanation on the need for forecasting, types of forecasting methods available and goes on to explain the methods. After explaining a method/model, the author provides examples on how to use the method. Thankfully the explanations and the theories were not brutal for me; you will have to accept the formulas given and learn how to use them to your needs. This book was not an easy read for me. It took several weeks (I admit, I was not reading it regularly) to read the book fully. I will have to do some real world exercises so I know how to apply the techniques in the book. It will be a while before I am fully conversant with the topics and the methods, but I am sure I will be much better off in the field of forecasting.Without a doubt, this is one of the best books I have read in Oracle performance and planning topic.

This is incredibly well-written and the examples are well thought out. It starts at the most basic ideas of what he plans to cover and slowly builds upon what you just learned. I am completely new to forecasting, with some background in tuning, and I have been able to follow everything so far. I do reread sections and really go through the examples in detail. Worth the effort! I highly recommend this book.

Exactly what i ordered at a great price

Being an IT person I like to read such methodological books to refresh myself. Before starting this book I had a feeling that it was little bit opposed to the secret of Stephen Hawking books where he had just used one famous formula E=mc^2. This book looked full of overwhelming mathematical formulas. However, author presented material in a very easy to digest way. All formulas are absolutely necessary for understanding the Forecasting approaches. These approaches are universal and don't depend on particular Oracle version. It's everything about applying proper forecasting models depending on the Forecasting question and workload data collected against complex Oracle environment. It's very straightforward if you read it fully. It's MUST for those who are facing questions like" What would happen if the workload was doubled in three months? Does it make sense to buy 6 more CPUs to maintain agreed SLA? etc etc.Book audience is1) Oracle DBAs2) Project managers/ Architects3) Oracle developersThis book is quite unique on a market, because most of existing Oracle books describe Performance Troubleshooting.Knowledge from this book will not become obsolete with new version of Oracle.

A fantastic book. Not one of those that you'll be able to get through over a weekend but is one of those books that you constantly go back to for reference or validation. Some of the techniques take the mystery out of capacity planning and forecasting performance. Excellent.

This is a great book to do FORECASTING, that is, if you already have a tunning problem you will not find the solution here. If you are in calm times regarding your application speed, this is when you have to do Performance Forecasting, for which this book is excelent. Very practical and just enough technicall to grasp the priciples.

I've always been a fan of Craig Shallahamer, an author who explains complex concepts in plain English. This is not a trivial book, but it's an excellent book for performance tuning, a worthy book for the worthy scholar.Oracle STATSPACK and the automated workload repository have provided a gold mine for the Oracle DBA to forecast future performance, and this is a great "get started" book to the statistical techniques that are required to perform performance forecasting.

This is not a book about Oracle Performance tuning. This is a book about Oracle Performance Forecasting. This should be evident after carefully reading the book.Good books, like good professionals, are rare. This is why I have developed a tendency to choose carefully before buying one and, in the Oracle area in particular, I can smell the author's intellectual honesty and trustworthiness from the first page.Forecasting Oracle Performance is one of those. I enjoyed the fluid style and closeness of the author. I enjoyed the simplicity and clarity, almost reminding me of Wittgenstein's famous quote ("everything that can be said can be said clearly"). I also enjoyed these short touches of humanism (cf Erlang Krarup's life). On the forecasting subject, I liked the book construction and the quality of the examples.Chapter 1 gives a landscape picture of Oracle forecasting and puts the reader in scope and context.Chapter 2 introduces the reader to the basics of forecasting and the basic concepts over which the book is built: Transactions, response time, arrival time and basic formulas are described here.Chapter 3 shows the limits of basic forecasting (essential formulas) and the problem of baseline and model selection. It shows how to increase forecasting precision with ErlangC or weighted averages. Most importantly, it shows why it is essential to understand the concepts and implications of the application of a given formula, model or method. The author is very careful in the choice of terms and always clears potential ambiguities. Those who know how difficult it can be to forecast will appreciate it.Chapter 4 introduces to statistics applied to forecasting.Chapter 5, on practical queuing theory, is probably the biggest chapter of the book. After a brief introduction to queuing theory, Little's law and Kendall notation, this chapter provides such a diverse set of examples (27!) making the topic very intuitive to non-specialists.Chapters 6 & 7 describe forecasting methodology and workload characterization. The first describes the steps across a solid performance forecasting methodology, from the initial question to the actual forecast. The second deals with workload characterization: how to get system and Oracle data, how to choose the source and peak. It describes the workload modelling and the risks of data collection.Chapters 8 and 9 are about models: ratio and linear regression models. They describe their respective foundations, limitations and advantages. Each chapter also contain several examples and case studies to illustrate the subject. The last chapter deals with scalability models and their relationship with forecasting models.Overall, I found this book very useful. You will find additional resources at the author's website (there is also a discussion forum on forecasting). The errata page is always up-to-date and some examples have even been extended. Great work!

Review

“Linda Hirshman’s joint biography of the first and second woman to serve on the nation’s highest court is a gossipy, funny, sometimes infuriating and moving tale of two women so similar and yet so different.” (NPR)“Vital...Part of what makes Hirshman such a likable writer — in addition to her wit and ability to explain the law succinctly without dumbing it down — is her optimism.” (Washington Post)“Fast-paced and sure-footed...persuasive...Hirshman’s ability to write clearly about the law without oversimplifying enables her to explain how O’Connor played defense and Ginsburg offense.” (Huffington Post)“A lovely, thoughtful, and fascinating chronicle of [O’Connor and Ginzburg’s] careers and lives that doubles as a concise history of the fight for equality for women.” (SCOTUS blog)“Carefully researched and enjoyably written” (Wall Street Journal)For anyone interested in the court, women’s history or both, the story of Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, their separate routes to the Supreme Court and what they accomplished during the more than 12 years they spent together is irresistible. (Linda Greenhouse, New York Times Book Review)“Linda Hirshman’s joint biography of Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg is fascinating and informative but is also joyful -- a stirring reminder of how these two pioneers for women’s rights have advanced the cause in their singular but complementary ways.” (Jeffrey Toobin, author of The Oath and The Nine)“A tale of two unfaltering women with steel-trap minds, their unlikely rapport, and the legal landscape they battle to reshape. Smart, startling, and profoundly moving.” (Stacy Schiff, author of Cleopatra: A Life)“Linda Hirshman has written a thorough, accurate, and most readable account of the careers of the two first women to serve as Justices of the Supreme Court. Laymen as well as lawyers will learn a great deal, not only about these two special people, but about today’s Court as well.” (Justice John Paul Stevens)“A riveting page-turner that will make you laugh, cry, and seethe with frustration at how long and hard the road to women’s equality has been. Above all, it will inspire and delight. A prodigious achievement and an important contribution to the history of our times.” (Leslie Bennetts, author of The Feminine Mistake)

This book turned out to offer much greater rewards than I had anticipated. I had thought it was largely a dual biography of Justices O'Connor and Ginsburg. And to be sure, there is a good solid amount of biographical analysis present here. But there is so much more as well. Primarily, the book is also a comprehensive history of the legal fights to achieve women's equality. The author, a law school grad with a Ph.D. as well, is quite well versed in this material. So be advised to expect a good deal of detailed legal analysis that goes along with the biographical material.Much of the early portion of this nearly 400 page book is devoted to Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her pioneering and lonely fight to attack legal discrimination against women beginning around 1970. Ginsburg, who directed the ACLU's Women's Rights Project (initially while teaching at Rutgers Law School; later a Columbia) chose to follow a "careful incremental strategy." Cases were carefully selected in order to develop a doctrinal bridge to the final goal. This is just one of the ways in which Ginsburg resembled Thurgood Marshall's strategy in the civil rights cases. Her ultimate goal was to get the Supreme Court to equate sex discrimination with race discrimination and apply the corresponding strict legal tests when evaluating claims of sexual discrimination. The author discusses the early major cases, including Reed v. Reed, Frontiero v. Richardson, and Kahn v. Shevlin. Interestingly enough, Ginsburg was not happy with the Roe v. Wade decision's reasoning, since she much preferred that it be based on a strict equality argument rather than the new right to privacy. While perhaps an overstatement, to me Ginsburg seems to be the heroine of the book while O'Connor stands somewhat in her shadow. Her background is carefully developed and it contrasts mightily with that of Ginsburg: conservative in upbringing and orientation, happy to spend much time in cooking and supporting her husband's career, her key experience being in the Arizona legislature, and not a militant supporter of women's equality to the extent of Ginsburg, The author does a fine job in recounting how she became the first woman on the Supreme Court thanks to Ronald Reagan. While O'Connor rises to the Supremes, Ginsburg eventually in 1980 is named to the D.C. Circuit, after many exertions by her famous tax lawyer husband, Martin Ginsburg.O'Connor's early years as the first and only woman on the Court are well recounted. She maneuvers around Burger, Blackmun and Rehnquist, and developed her technique of limiting major holdings to the specific facts of the cases, often imposing unclear standards such as "exceedingly persuasive justification" on confused lower court judges. Caution and compromise were her hallmarks. Meanwhile, Ginsburg continues fighting the battle for women's equality from the D.C. Circuit. Eventually, due to departures, O'Connor becomes the critical fifth vote and exploits her virtual control in many cases. When Bill Clinton puts Ginsburg on the Court in 1996, the narrative becomes especially interesting as the author traces the two female justices' early interactions, respective approaches to cases, agreements and disagreements. The discussions of the abortion cases during this period, and the VMI case, are particularly informative. When O'Connor leaves the Court in 2006--the situation clarified by the author--Ginsburg continues on alone until the arrival of Justices Sotomayor and Kagan, with a more conservative court due to substitution of Justice Alito for O'Connor. There are many strong points supporting the author's analysis. Her research is exhaustive, including interviews and correspondence, speeches and other published sources. She has made good use of Justice's papers, particularly Blackmun and Powell, to get an insider view of events. In that connection, she highlights the important role of female law clerks in persuading more conservative judges to adopt some of Ginsburg and O'Connor's arguments. This book represents part of a recent trend to focus attention on the life, work and contributions of Justice Ginsburg. See, e.g., Scott Dodson (ed.), "The Legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg." At age 82, we don't know how long this amazing career will continue because the Justice has rejected calls that she step down so a younger liberal judge can replace her. When I have seen her at the Court, she seemed quite frail--I guess I'm not the first to underestimate the drive and raw intellectual power she brings to bear. More books on her are coming so we can learn even more about this remarkable lawyer and judge. This fine book will be a helpful introduction to both Justices who were so influential and pioneering.

One of the most engaging non-fiction books of the year, Sisters in Law, nominally a comparison of the two first WOTSC, takes a sweeping and provocative look at the changing culture vis a vis women as reflected through the legal system. Over the last fifty years, our society has moved -- not always steadily -- from a position of "protecting" women to a legal system that increasingly endorses equal treatment of all. Hirshman briskly escorts the reader through dozens of cases, beginning with those that Ginsburg tackled during her early years as an advocate for women's rights and ACLU volunteer, culminating with Hobby Lobby. Some of the most seminal and best-known cases, especially Roe v Wade, repeatedly surface; there is an undercurrent of concern that women's reproductive rights will be curtailed, which may surprise those readers who thought that women's right to choose had been assured for the last 40+ years.Looking back from our vantage point of 2015, most women can be grateful that we live and work in a world that doesn't try to protect us from serving on juries, managing the estates of deceased relatives, or competing in schools or jobs once considered too tough for women. Does women's progress reflect the Supreme Court's rulings, or has the nature of the rulings adapted to the changing mores of the general public? Hirshman does not address this question directly, but after reading the book, I see both as contributing factors. This is not truly a biography of either justice, though Hirshman describes the formative years of both. Though she tries to be evenhanded, it is pretty clear that she favors the Notorious RGB's passion, commitment, and laser-like legal focus over O'Connor's comparative wishy-washiness, imprecise language, and occasional abdication of jurisprudential sensibilities as with Bush v Gore. No reader will be surprised that Ginsburg got the t-shirts and the rap song.I had two issues with SIL, neither of them significant enough to subtract even 1/2 star. First, when the author refers back to a case mentioned earlier in the book, it would have been helpful to include a quick reference to the nature of the case to save the reader the trouble of shuffling pages, virtually or otherwise, to remember exactly which case that was. Second, and more troubling to me, was Hirshman's occasional references to living people, including the justices, as if they were long gone. For example, Mechelle Vinson's suit against a former employer was decided in 1986; Hirshman notes that after the case was settled, Vinson "had a long good life." Seems a little premature to make such a judgment about someone who is still alive and in her 50s.Amidst a current crop of books that direct women how to live their lives for maximum success, Sisters in Law is a pointed reminder of the role played by cultural expectations and legal constraints. Though it's hardly chick-lit, it's a must-read for upwardly mobile women of all ages.

Linda Hirshman does a great job dissecting the tactics and patient strategies employed by both Justice O'Connor and Justice Ginsburg in advancing not just the common law, but humanity itself. As a raving fan of both jurists, I was pleased with the detailed portrayal of the efforts each of them made in the field of women's rights. I was also impressed by the honest and respectful way Hirshman describes the missteps that each made at times. All judges and Justices are human beings first. We the people have empowered them to help decide thorny issues because we respect their thinking and their endless quest for justice. Both Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg are larger-than-life figures in 20th-century America. By their statements and advocacy, the US is a stronger and more inclusive place to live.Sisters in Law is written for readers who have significant exposure to the law. I would not have understood many of its points before suffering through a constitutional law class as a 1L. Having practiced law for almost two decades now, I have seen the glacial pace of change and have developed a new respect for the techniques that make the Constitution relevant to modern society. I felt that Linda Hirshman also understands and respects the role that the judicial branch of government fills, and its moderating influence on the politicians filling the other two branches. Good work!

Great book. Some good advice and pertinent reflection. The book speaks to the teens and approach subjects that some teens do not like or feel uncomfortable to share with parents in details (such as sex life, alcohol and addictions). Our teens usually look at the sky whenever we talk about these subjects (so boring Rrrr!) but Sean Covey manages to explain how important their choices on this matter are and how it can influence the rest of their existence. Also, the vocabulary is straight forward and accessible to any teen. Highly recommended.

A gift for my 15-yr old grandson. I read it before giving it to him - pre-qualify. Good advice for everyone.

My 9th grade twins needed this for a required reading. I am only giving it four stars because I didn't see them "glued" to the book and reading it cover to cover. However, it has such great advice for kids and is written in their language. They happened to be reading it when my husband and I announced that we were divorcing, I found one of the boys laying in his bed reading it that night with a few tears in his eyes and it helped us start a conversation. I think it has helped them deal with what life brings.

Our 12 year old son loves this book. Out of the blue, the book has spawned many deep questions and conversation from him. The book is helping him sort out many of the important decisions, issues and questions kids his age face.

My son will be 14 next month. He's an eighth grader. This book couldn't have come at a better time. My son is very receptive to the information. We have been reading together every night for about a half hour and he actually looks forward to it. Sean Covey writes on a level to which teens can relate. He doesn't sugar coat anything. It's straight forward and factual, yet it's written with tact and not too graphic. I would highly recommend this book for kids in late middle school and early high school. At the rate we are going, they are hearing about or even seeing so much of this in school already. Far better this education be lead by the parent instead of other kids at school.

I work with the local municipality assisting first offender youths by providing them with counseling on what they did wrong, and giving them a way to provide reparations for their actions. We have used this book as one of those means. Its straightforward, provides common issues that kids face, and it provides straightforward ways of dealing with those conflicts. I don't agree with everything in the book, but it will help the kids gain perspective and it's an easy read. I was able to read it in a couple days and be able to reference talking points from the book with the kids. (I do think if you want a child to read it, you should as well. It may help you (parent, guardian, authority figure) with some perspective as well)

I purchased two copies, one for each of my children/teens. They both and myself read this book cover to cover and my teens will re-read it when the need arises. Just another tool for parenting without sounding like a preaching parent.

I got this for my turn son after he took a class on the 7 habits of highly effective teens. He likes it! Wish I'd had this knowledge when I was a teen!

Review

“'Maria Sharapova’s Unstoppable May Just Be the Best Part of Her Comeback Tour.' . . . This is the bildungsroman of a controversial champion, a portrait of the athlete as an uncommonly driven young woman . . . It’s also a Horatio Alger–worthy tale of rags to riches, with a slightly nihilistic Russian twist. . . ” ―Julia Felsenthal, Vogue"Everybody ought to read it.” ―Pam Shriver, tennis champion and ESPN commentator"A fascinating and well-written (with the help of Vanity Fair journalist Rich Cohen) insight into her struggles, triumphs, obsession with Williams, Russian pessimism and the roots of that famous haughtiness." ―Simon Hattenstone, The Guardian"Fiercely honest . . . a refreshing look at the tennis superstar’s rags-to-riches story." ―Hamptons"The surprisingly compelling Unstoppable is at its best when recounting Sharapova’s fraught early life . . . It’s apt that Sharapova recruited non-fiction master Rich Cohen as her collaborator here. It’s Cohen’s polish that elevates Unstoppable." ―David Shaftel, The Financial Times“A determined journey from the bitter cold and desolation of Siberia to the warm (at times burning) glow of international superstardom . . . All the big matches are relived in a speedy, engaging way, and her prose exudes confidence as she describes her ability to dominate her peers on the tour and how she came to be considered one of the greatest female players of the game. Her writing becomes more vulnerable, frustrated, and interesting when she explores her struggles with Serena Williams." ―Geoffrey Gray, Bookforum"An inspiring memoir . . . Sure to satisfy longtime fans of women’s tennis." ―Booklist"Insightful . . . Sharapova’s eloquent self-awareness provides a rare glimpse into the disorienting push and pull of a famous athlete’s life." ―Publishers Weekly"Remarkable . . . An impressive immigration tale, an inspiring coming-of-age narrative, and a host of useful advice on navigating celebrity culture. Sharapova demonstrates consistent dedication and impressive wisdom for her age." ―Kirkus Reviews

This is a beautifully written memoir that deserves recognition for Maria’s passionate portrayal of her life and her challenges along the way. From the very first page I admit to tears flowing regularly, so much so that I slowed down my reading to treasure every single page. A life lived without passion is no life at all. I admire her emotional strength and thank a very close friend for insisting I read about Maria’s journey. A must read for its lessons, not just on sport, but on living life to its fullest. Thank you, Maria, for sharing your heart and your spirit. As I said when I wrote my own story: when you write a memoir, there’s nowhere to hide.

Actually, I would rate this book as a 6. Like a Russian doll, with multiple dolls within it, the book is really many stories. For me, the most interesting was Sharapova's description of the elements in her character which made her so successful: determination to win, persistence, focus. Second, the story is about a family faced with an exceptional child. Do you provide the opportunities to develop that exceptional talent. Do you insist that the kid needs to live a balanced life. Third, the story is about an individual and a family who have sacrificed so much to achieve a goal. Mom is left at home because she cannot get a visa. The very young daughter writes emotional letters to her mom each day. A boy sees one of the letters and criticizes her for the emotional letters. "It's all well and good. You have a mom, I don't", Sharapova replies. This is a story about people pursuing an impossible goal, amazingly achieving it. Finally, the book is about a star tennis player that I have sometimes seen.

Interesting, but nothing really that was not known before. If there was something, the press picked up the extracts just before the book launching.

Great read! Well written, amazing life story of a remarkable person. Would recommend to every young person with high aspirations, it is wonderful to see how this remarkable young lady found a way to stay focused on only things that really matter. It is also a very honest and candid pick into a behind the scenes workings of a world class athlete with all the support systems and team work that goes into it. Highly recommend to everyone, very entertaining and eyeopening. Enjoy!

I loved her honesty. It was interesting to read, in her own words, about how she came to America and became the player, and person, she is today. I already admired her, this just validated my feelings even more so.

If you like tennis and you want to know the real Maria Sharapova and what makes her tick, read this book. You'll be glad you did.You will be somewhat surprised by the full story of her life with it's many struggles, victories and defeats. And amazed by her intelligent, down to earth writing ability.

Whether you're into tennis or not, this book is great. It tells the life of a champion. Highs and lows. And what it takes to get there. It is written so well. I read it in record time. I highly recommend.

I read with in interest Maria's take on her career so far. Her reason for taking Mildronate sounds plausible. I will look forward to watching her play and grow in Grace in the next few years.
