This is an adventure story of a little-known figure who made a big impact on the lives of many in World War II in Italy. This story of the Irish Catholic priest Msgr. Hugh O'Flaherty working in the Vatican's Holy Office relates his extensive efforts to find hiding places in areas around Rome for Allied soldiers and flyers on the run from the Nazis. It is quite a story, easy to read, and very engaging. (As one who is currently teaching middle school history, I think it might even be a good book for teens. And for adult readers as well, of course.)My only disappointment was that there are no footnotes identifying the sources of the information in the text and there is no Index to help the reader find information in the book. I would also have found it helpful to have a "Cast of Characters" to help keep the people straight in my mind. (For readers wanting a more scholarly approach to the same topic, perhaps Stephen Walker's "Hide and Seek" would be an option, which I have also read and reviewed.) And I do like a few more photos than were included here as they help to make connections. But all considered, I highly recommend this book as it sheds light on a little-known aspect of World War II.I read this book after viewing the DVD by the same name on the same subject. Gregory Peck plays Msgr. O'Flaherty in the movie and is a much more dashing figure than Msgr. O'Flaherty in real life, but such is Hollywood!

What a remarkable man this was. Many will be familiar with the story through the portrayal of this Monsignor by Gregory Peck. Typically, as remarkable as the movie is, the true story is even moreso. The book makes a great companion to the film to sort out fact from fiction and fictionalized facts. This is the story of a Catholic priest, more, about one man's personal campaign against evil and he did not care what uniform it wore. He was not in partnership with any nationality. His first loyalty was to Rome and the Vatican. But, he waged his campaign knowing that the system could only go so far in sheltering him and those who worked with him and unselfishly, he never let personal risk deter him from doing what he saw as right. One need not be a Catholic or Christian to appreciate the lengths he went to and risks he took in opposing the greatest evil of the last century. Do not let religious bias stay you from reading this. As the man himself was big, his story is bigger than that.

A superbly researched and finely written book that tells the story that was unknown to me prior to my watching Gregory Peck in the made for TV movie “The Scarlet and the Black” which was based on this book (a fine move that follows the book closely). I found an original hardbound copy of the book in good shape to give to my 86 year old mother who loves the history of the Catholic Church. I read the book, cover to cover, in two evenings before sending it on. My mother and I both were enthralled in the telling of the cat and mouse game between the “Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican” and the Gestapo. I bought another paperback copy of the book that was retitled with the name of the movie to share with my wife who loves murder mysteries and she too was gripped by the telling of the story of the near misses and the tragic losses of those who stood between the innocents and the Gestapo. 6 stars out of 5!!!

This story was fascinating. I read it after having read Church of Spies, which gave a different viewpoint and background of the same time period and helped me to put some things in perspective. I highly recommend reading both books. This very interesting and highly informative book reads more like a novel than a history book. Very well done.

This is a book of mostly anecdotes about Msgr. O'Flaherty's activities before and during the Nazi occupation of Rome. By all measures, this man is a hero whose daring approaches to rescuing Allied military as well as Italian anti-fascists, and protecting their whereabouts made for a fascinating story. I've walked by his residence at Vatican City many times and now that I know a bit more about him, I'll always remember his exploits, those of a true hero.

No matter how you feel about Catholicism, this is a book about human courage and compassion. This man was a priest who did not follow the rules of the Vatican, crept out in disguise at night to rescue victims of the Third Reich in Italy, and showed his love, humanity and courage throughout the worst time in our history. After the war he continued with his compassion and love in a most remarkable way that I will not ruin by telling you. Read the book!

This is a story that I had never heard before, and I am glad that I found this book. The suspense was chilling, as the good Monsignor and his Allied and Italian "helpers" managed to keep over 5000 POW and Jewish people safe from the Nazis. And the courage of the Italian people is inspiring.. John Furman also wrote a book about this period, where after the war they recognized the Italians who had made this remarkable feat possible.

True heroes don't consider themselves to be one. Thank good J. P. Gallagher was able to get enough info from Monsignor O'Flaherty and the others involved in this adventure of history. I was so happy to see this book back in print. I love the TV movie with Gregory Peck that was based on this book. Overall, the movie is true to the book. However, when you see the photo of the real Monsignor O'Flaherty, you'll think of Karl Malden.

This book was amazing! It was short and included many details about Steve Jobs. What surprised me the most was the fact that he was so poor and then became a billionaire. "Steve couldn't pay for college". "Steve Jobs was a success- a big success. He wasn't a millionaire anymore. He was a billionaire." Steve Jobs has showed me that it doesn't matter where you come from, you can be a success. That a poor child can go from having no money to becoming one of the richest and youngest men alive.

My 11 year old daughter loves this book. She also likes the others in the series, but she really loves this one. Its cool that she understands the background behind all the Apple devices she is using. She really embraced the idea that Steve Jobs did not invent any of the technologies, he just made them practical, and more importantly, fun to use. She said she thought she knew a lot about Jobs before reading the book, but she really didn't know much at all. She was amazed in the amount of interesting facts about his life. She talked about Jobs for about 3 days straight after reading it.

Who Was books have become a favorite of my 9 year old boy. They provide a lot of factual information in a fun way... keeps me from constantly having to Google factoids for my son =)

must read

If you enjoy computers (and it's history); and, other electronics, you'll have a deep appreciation for the life (described in this book) of Steve Jobs. He was a true visionary.

I absolutely love the Who was books. They are so great for my 10 year old and I. Has enough info to keep an adult interested yet illustrations to keep a child interested.

My grandson had a research paper to do on Steve Jobs. This book was a real help and gave a lot of back ground information in a simple and straightforward manner. He was able to get a lot of basic information here and then go to other places if he needed to expand on the basic information. Very well done for an elementary school child.

the book is fantastic, i can't take y mind of it and i can't stop reading it a thousand times.

WOW. This book is outstanding. Others have reviewed the book's content, and they do it far better than I could. So, instead, I'll attest to the healing power of this diet.Over a year and a half ago, I became sick. Super sick. So sick I was unable to get out of bed. I eventually realized my adrenal glands were shot. So I quit my job and school and took time off, expecting to recuperate within a few months. Ha.I researched and researched, pouring over everything I could read online. I had a Candida infection (resulting from allopathic drugs) that never went away. I'd literally feel poisoned, especially after eating. My immune system was a mess. I had zero energy. I suffered severe chemical and mold sensitivities and began to develop hives. I started developing arthritis in my knees and fingers. Some days it was so bad it prevented me from knitting/crocheting, two of my favorite pasttimes. I experienced constant congestion and back-to-back sinus infections. My body was in terrible shape. I'm not a dramatic person by nature, but I assure you, some days I wasn't sure how much sicker one could get before the body just gave up altogether. I kept getting weaker and more exhausted by the day. For months, I didn't leave the house. For the record, I'm 32 years old. (Mind-blowing, isn't it?) After several months of research and trial and error, I discovered the adrenal issues were a symptom of a much larger problem - severe leaky gut and gut dysbiosis. If the preceding paragraph sounds like hyperbole to you, I can't say I blame you. Before my experience, I'd have been skeptical too. I had been preparing to study biochemistry in grad school. Before I became ill, I thought chronic illnesses and autoimmune diseases could merely be 'managed.' In blind faith, I had accepted what the medical establishment tells us. That was fine, until the medical establishment failed me...repeatedly. I gave up on allopathic medicine and knew it would be my responsibility to heal myself. As much as this illness has consumed me, it really was a true wake-up call. A blessing in disguise. So I researched. Boy, did I research. I took vitamin/mineral supplements. I got my detox pathways up and running again, as per Dr. Myhill's methylation protocol. I followed her advice for supporting mitochondrial health. I started eating meat. I had been a vegetarian for 16 years, but I was so sick I had no difficulty adjusting to eating meat again. In fact, I craved it. Things improved slightly, but my quality of life was still abysmal. Finally, a few months ago I happened upon some website extolling the GAPS diet. I looked into it but figured I was already eating a clean (mostly) paleo diet, so I didn't need to buy this book. I didn't think it was that different from what I was already doing. When I had to stay home on Christmas day because I felt so toxic and crummy, I decided to purchase the book. So, sure I had already eliminated processed foods and gluten. But I still ate cheese everyday. I still ate sweet potatoes and oats. I still ate a lot of fiber. This book showed me the error of my ways. These things are fine for a healthy gut. But my gut was a complete wreck and needed special help. More importantly, this book showed me what I WASN'T eating that I needed to be eating: lots of bone broth and marrow, organ meats, and lots of ferments, amongst other things.I started following the GAPS diet intro on January 1st of this year. The first two weeks were brutal. I had been toxic for so long that I was used to feeling lousy, but the die-off this diet produced was intense. In the book, she stresses the importance of managing die-off; but, because I was so toxic, there was really little I could do. The diet alone, even without the introduction of probiotics, sauerkraut, and kefir was enough to produce rapid die-off.Then early last week, it was like the fog broke. Gradually, I started having more energy. I announced to my shocked boyfriend that I wanted to go for a walk in the park like we used to do. We did. I suffered no repercussions from it, whereas before GAPS it would have taken me days to recover. I now go for a 30-45 minute walk nearly every day. I can't stress how utterly amazing this is. I prayed that GAPS would help me. It was my last resort. However, I never expected it to work this quickly. Truth be told, I'm still stunned.I'm nowhere near fully recovered. I've still got toxins circulating. I still feel die-off, but it is nowhere near what it once was. True, I take other supplements. However, since starting GAPS I have stopped taking the majority of my supplements, simply because I no longer need them. At long last, my diet is providing the nutrients my body has been needing all along for repair (particularly cholesterol and saturated fats, which are sadly demonized in our culture). I probably sound like a crazy person because I'm so, so excited about this book and this diet; but if you're sick like I was, you know all too well what it's like to live in a chronically ill body. I don't know what percentage of CFS is caused by gut dysbiosis, but I know that mine was. If yours is, this is, without a doubt, the diet to follow.Because I'm having such rapid success on the intro phase, I intend to stick with it for a few months. Some people fly through it in a matter of days before starting full GAPS. That's the nice thing about this diet; you move at your own pace and let your body be the guide.I'm also curious to see how this diet helps me with the mental health issues I've contended with since childhood (namely fits of debilitating anxiety, ocd, and depression that have become increasingly severe in the last few years). I had tried several SSRI's over the last ten years until a new doctor put me on Adderall (which is nothing more than a mixture of amphetamine salts and is very, very hard on the adrenals) after diagnosing me with ADHD. The SSRI's never worked. I'd be happy if GAPS prevents my anxiety from getting worse, but truly I'd love to see the anxiety eliminated permanently. At this point I have no expectations. After all, I've lived with the anxiety for 30 years. But if anything can help, I firmly believe it'll be this diet. This book saved me. Reading success stories of people recovering from CFS is what got me through the worst moments. I hope my story does the same, and I will update again in a few months as I progress along my GAPS journey. I wish you all the best of health.UPDATE 4/10/12: Spring has sprung here. I no longer seem to be affected by pollen, which in previous years gave me terrible allergies and sinus infections. In fact, I have not had a sinus infection in months. The arthritis symptoms are completely gone. I've lost 15 pounds and walk an hour or more just about daily in addition to my chores around the house. Also, for the last 3 months my monthly cycle has been just that (cyclical). In the 20 years I've been menstruating, I've NEVER once had a regular cycle. Now it's literally every 28-29 days. There has been no improvement on the mental stuff yet; in fact, the die-off seems to be temporarily making it much worse.UPDATE 3/1/13: I've been on GAPS for over a year now, with no deviation. No cheating whatsoever. I can honestly say I don't miss any of the "normal" food that I used to eat. This stuff is just so nutrient-dense that I don't ever think of eating anything else. And I used to literally be addicted to sugar. So, that's pretty cool. As to my progress - physically, I'm not much stronger than I was six months ago. But I'm still light-years ahead of where I was two years ago. Still taking walks, doing chores, knitting, able to function like a human being. I'm experiencing new die-off symptoms (caused by breaking up biofilm in my gut with probiotics and systemic enzymes, I believe) like visual disturbances, rosacea and other rashes, adrenaline rushes, numbness/tingling/burning in my extremities. Apparently, these things are all typical for Candida overgrowth. I'm not surprised that I haven't experienced more physical improvement. My Candida infection was/is quite severe, and I've always anticipated that it would take several years to recover. Happily, though I am able to report a significant improvement in my mental well-being. My depressive episodes started to lift just a few months into GAPS, and now they are all but gone. My favorite improvement by far, however, has been with my anxiety and panic attacks. It took about a year, but they are about 85% gone, at this point. I can't tell you how wonderful it feels to have some relief from this torment for the first time in over ten years (most of my adult life). It should be obvious, but in case it's not, this protocol is not (nor does it claim to be) a quick-fix. I've had gut dysbiosis (and many, many rounds of antibiotics) since birth. It takes a long time to undo decades' worth of damage. The diet is only the base, although Dr. Natasha says that for many GAPS folks, the diet alone is enough. In my case, after the infection is gone, I will still need to detox, fix my adrenals completely, get my metabolic hormones back in order, and perhaps chelate. I have no delusions about how long this is going to take. Thanks to all of you who have commented or contacted me over the past year; it's been wonderful swapping stories and information. I'm very grateful to you all. Here's to continued healing! :)UPDATE 11/13/13: A lot of healing occurred this year. A lot. I now walk 4-5 miles almost everyday. I am doing so much more than I have in the last few years. I am still quite toxic but can now tolerate an infrared sauna, which is great for detox, every other day. (My adrenals were too weak, and I was so toxic my body could not handle it before.) The little things that used to require so much effort are back to being a routine part of my life, i.e. doing my hair, wearing make-up, etc. I feel more like my old self than I have in a long, long time. Occasionally, I feel even better than I remembered. There are still periods every few weeks of fatigue and die-off, where my IBS symptoms act up, anxiety and brain fog skyrocket, and I feel rough. But I haven't had one panic attack! What I (and my fella) are most excited about is I actually get to celebrate the holidays this year! I missed out on them the past two years, so I'm making up for that. Lots of GAPS baking and so forth. I have read most of the other reviews here, and I am so happy about and moved by how much this diet is helping people with chronic, so-called "untreatable" conditions. My thoughts are with all of you, and I want to wish everyone happy holidays!

This is a decent book with some interesting information about mental and autoimmune health issues and vaccines that I hadn't heard phrased rationally before. Just don't expect GAPS to be a cure-all. As far as technical specs go, it's bit of a difficult read, since the spacing is really tight, font is small, and formatting is sparse and minimal (and not in a good way).As for GAPS itself, I did low-FODMAP modified GAPS including the reintroduction diet strictly for 3+ months; consumed tons of grass-fed grass-finished homemade beef bone broth made from meat and marrow bones (4+ hrs high in instant pot) with nothing in it but carrots, a tiny bit of organic ACV, salt, and pepper. Made homemade fermented foods and ate small amounts regularly, gently cooked organic local veggies, didn't eat out, etc., all of which required a lot of self-control and I thought for sure I would see results. Nope, took a stool test at the end of the 3 months and was told I had liver/gallbladder issues and likely hydrogen sulfide SIBO, after being on GAPS for 3 months. All-in-all I would say get a stool test first to figure out more about what you are dealing with health-wise before you sink all the effort into this demanding diet.

THis book changed my family's life. My kids had various health issues including chronic hives, PANS, asthma, and IBS. We have been doing gaps for 2.5 years now, and my children are off all prescription meds and health issues are all resolved. I know it sounds too good to be true but it isn't. The gaps protocol is very time consuming and requires a major lifestyle change from the standard American diet but it is so worth it if you want your children to be well.

Like with most information you find over the internet, promising this and that, I was very careful not to set myself up for disappointment, again! When I was 28, I started developing strange symptoms of constant anxiety and a general feeling of being unwell. I made so many excuses as to why I was feeling this way: weather/change of climate, allergies, not getting enough rest, stress etc., no matter what I tried to do about it, it would just not go away! Maybe I had some good days here and there but I was on a steady decline with my health. A year later, things started to get really bad, I had constant brain fog, digestive issues and anxiety that landed me in the ER, twice (nothing they could do!) I was falling apart and despite over eight different doctors (neurologist, hematologist, countless times to general practitioner, several naturapathic docs) and tens of thousands of dollars later I still didn't know why I was feeling this way.The following couple of years I was in a sad and desperate state. When I thought things were getting better, they would suddenly get worse. I had so many different symptoms and they were getting more severe. Heart palpitations, insomnia, constant fear and startled easily, fear of the future, tightness in the throat (it would feel as if I was choking sometimes, unable to workout, pale, red eyes and fatigue around the eye sockets, severe allergies, off and on constipation, nightmares, hypoglycemia, brain fog, skin issues ( I looked really old) the list goes on., The worst part was not knowing what was causing all of this, so I began searching the internet for solutions. It was difficult and frustrating trying to navigate and weed through all the bologna, I didn't know where to start since I had so many different things going on. In early 2012 I started the Dr. Lam protocol for Adrenal fatigue. I was sure this was it since so many of the symptoms he illustrated in his videos was exactly what was going on with me. His protocol worked for a year and things were slowly (and I do mean slowly) starting to get better, stomach issues were gone, sleep and heart issues were somewhat better but I still felt something on a much deeper level was causing this. In the beginning of 2013, like a light switch, things began going down hill again. Anxiety and depression came back with a vengeance, as did fatigue and various other symptoms. I was going backwards again and I felt panicked all the time which made working my full time job almost impossible some days.Once again I became desperate and alone. I couldn't go to the doctors because I knew they would say the same things, by this time they just thought I was crazy and a hypochondriac anyway and I refused to go on anti-depression and anxiety pills (I've seen what they did to other people I know.) I lost contact with all my friends since I couldn't do anything with them, I was too weak and depressed for no reason. I would come home from work crash on the bed and just lye there. I thought maybe I was not doing the Dr. Lam program properly so I started pumping on on supplements that he provided and taking all these natural pills, regardless it just wasn't working. How could all of this be happening to a once healthy and alive 28 year old!!In October of 2013 I finally decided to take a parasite test from a lab here in Scottsdale that specialises in parasites. I had heard of things like Candida before but didn't think something in my gut would be the cause of all this misery, besides my stomach issues were not even an issue anymore, I would have the occasional constipation, but thats it. I took the test anyway and two weeks later got the results back from my doc. The results left me both scared and relieved, high amounts of Candida were found in my stool! The report stated that the candida levels were high enough to cause health issues and somehow they also knew that these things were multiplying in my gut. Finally a diagnoses! But still, I was not 100 percent convinced that this was the issue, it was hard to since so many things I tried before had failed me. I started a "candida diet" and eliminated all processed sugars and other processed food in general. I did this for the following two months with some positive results but nothing ground breaking yet (with the exception of losing 30lbs within a very short amount of time.) Progress but I was still dealing with horrible anxiety and afteroon depression.I started to do some more research and try alternatives to getting rid of candida. People have reported having Candida issues for years and they were still unable to get rid of it. This left me a bit dismayed, why was it so diffiult to get rid of? I heard of the GAPS diet through a health blog, I've heard of it before but didn't want to have to research yet another program. But something told my I should consider it. I started reading about it and it did make sense, so I started the gaps diet in February of 2013 and began eliminated all grains and sugars. I began making my own beef and chicken broths and stews and ate them regularly. I eat vegetables "swimming" in good fats and get plenty of sun. After three months I'm happy to report that i've seen the most improvement in my health than anything else I've tried! Over the past few months I've still have had bad weeks, like something is trying to work itself out of my body. But when I feel good, I feel really good and it stays with my longer. It seems like its been a two step forward one step back progress. Other times it's been three steps forward then three steps back. I'm also happy to report that I can work-out again and feel good afterward, this is something I was not able to do for the past four years. But overall a upward progress! I've very happy with the results so far but I also need to acknowledge that I'm not 100%. Not going to get over excited quite yet.At this writing I feel about 65 to 70%. Six months ago I was at a 35 to 50 (just for reference.) My depression is only very subtly noticeable during the afternoon and some days it's a non issue. Anxiety levels have dropped considerably and I don't have that constant "on edge wired and tired" feeling. The brain fog is much less significant and some stretches of days it doesn't exist at all, my thinking is much clearer also! Hypoglycemia has reduced a lot also, not constantly hungry for sugar and food in general. Energy levels are way up! Heavy and fatigued feeling around my eyes is almost completely gone. Skin has improved and I'm getting carded again when I enter a bar with friends. A lot of other changes for the better, too many to list here in fact.I am grateful for this book and I will continue to report my progress as I am planing to make this a permanent lifestyle for at least another year. I hope to report continued positive news! I wish everyone well.(UPDATE June 3, 2014)Hit a major wall, feeling some major anxiety and brain fog. I feel as if a bunch of toxins were suddenly released and are flowing around in my body. Stomach issues have back, constipation especially and gas. Ugh feel like hell. I'm going to stick with the diet and hopefully everything clears. Still taking probiotics and eating fermented foods. Starting intro GAPS.(UPDATE August 16, 2014)Past couple of weeks I've been feeling significantly better. Brain fog and anxiety have started to clear up, don't have that constant on edge feeling. Energy has improved significantly and I'm able to work-out again! Feeling more motivated about doing things and am starting to do things I used to enjoy. Feeling more optimistic about life in general and not as depressed (for no reason) anymore. Able to concentrate at work and productivity is up. Pretty amazing how things have suddenly started to improve. Going to continue to be cautiously optimistic but significant improvement. It's been a two step forward one step back progression and at times one step forward four steps back. But eventually I'm propelled up again, very strange. I'm still on the fifth stage of GAPS protocol and I've been taking liver clearing supplements, they have been helping a-lot. I've been feeling the best I have in years, bottom line. I'm hoping for continued progress, will keep you updated.

I grow up reading about Arellano's and to be honest I was expecting more about this book. Anyway it was entertaining!

Very good!

This book is total bull****. Like is other books, Reyna's books, I would not recommend it in any way, not even to Benjamin.

Bijaboji: North to Alaska by Oar

Review

Pat BurketteSpecial to Times ColonistOctober 24, 2004In the summer of 1937, ships and planes searched for aviatrix Amelia Earhart, lost in the Pacific while attempting the first round-the-world flight by a woman. But along B.C.'s Inside Passage, West Coasters kept a sharp lookout for the girl in the red canoe. The girl, who had dipped her oars in the waters off Guemes Island, Wash., on June 18, with the intent of rowing to Ketchikan, Alaska, was 22-year-old Anacortes resident Beatrice Annette Lowman, called Betty for short. The red canoe was Bijaboji (pronounced beejabogee), a cedar dugout. Betty's father, Ray Lowman, gave it to her on her 18th birthday, saying "Now it is yours, and it is a masterpiece of workmanship. It is like a Grand Banks dory, perfect for survival on the open sea. Be sure that your seamanship takes nothing away from the seaworthiness of this native canoe."Betty, the Lowman's eldest child, named the canoe using the first two letters of her brothers' names -- Bill, Jack, Bob and Jimmy. The newly released book Bijaboji, North to Alaska by Oar (Harbour Publishing, $34.95) tells the page-turning story of Lowman's 1937 journey. Betty Lowman has been Betty Lowman Carey for 62 years. She lives in Sandspit with her husband, Neil Carey. Over the phone, 82-year-old Neil explains that Betty was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease a couple of years ago, and it affects some of her memory, so he'll do the talking for both of them.As editor of Bijaboji, Neil put together Betty's writings about her trip, including published articles and columns. Betty graduated from the University of Washington with a journalism degree, and worked as a newspaper reporter and magazine feature writer. Why did they wait so long?"I met Betty in 1940, and all this time, she's kept saying I'm going to write a book about that trip," says Neil. "But every day of life was so much pleasure we didn't get down to it. With Betty turning 90 the last day of July this year, I thought, by golly we better do it."Betty might have put off the book about the trip, but the trip itself was something she felt she had to complete. Ray Lowman forbade Betty's journey, saying it was too dangerous."Seventy years ago, there was a limit to what girls could do," explains Neil.Betty invited a university friend, Florence Steele, to come along once her father had left for the Alaskan canneries in his boat, Una Mae. Flo, worried about the smallpox epidemic that had devastated the coast decades before, got a vaccination. By the time they reached Garden Bay in Pender Harbour, with Betty doing all the rowing, Flo, ill from the shot, decided to go back home. Betty was then about 240 kilometres from home with 1,100 or more kilometres to go. Alone at sea, she was in her element, rowing day and night, working tides and weather, singing ditties like Greig's My Mind is Like a Peak Snow-Crowned, and sleeping in the rough on bits of beach or a pile of drift logs."There were millions of stars overhead and a familiar constellation or two," she writes of a night row to Cortes Island. "I was alone, ecstatic, free of self-consciousness about my muscular 160 pounds, free of know-it-alls trying to tell me what equipment I would have bought for the trip if I weren't crazy. If I weren't so broke and loving it!" Betty's sparse gear included sleeping bag, cooking kit, horsehide gloves to prevent blisters, hunting knife and waterproof container of matches. She had no compass, watch or money. She quickly found her niche in a water world "where material possessions counted for nothing if you did not have brains, strength and ability." Not to mention determination."Every other white person I knew of who had gone north in a hand-propelled craft had taken a steamer across the strait from Alert Bay," she writes of her intention to row across wind-swept Queen Charlotte Strait. "Afterward, all said they could have rowed or paddled across. I wanted to do it. Not to wish I had."In isolated homesteads and settlements along the coast, she met like-minded pioneering people, who recognized her as one of their own.Betty was fed the favoured breakfast of bacon and eggs, sent on her way with huge sack lunches, offered baths, given bunks in tugboats, fishing trollers and cabins, and taken on side-trips.Bijaboji is a trip through B.C.'s history. Some of the places Betty visited have gone, and some remain. Early in the journey, Betty and Flo landed on a beach on Saltspring Island. They were welcomed into a nearby farmhouse by a "smiling, hunched-over Scots lady" who served hot tea steeped over coals scraped onto the hearth."The lady would have been Aunty Madge," says Saltspring's Dan Caldwell instantly. His family still owns Walker's Hook, where the beach is located. Old apple and plum trees still stand, but only a few remnants of that farmhouse remain. "Her name was Margaret Sinclair Caldwell, and she was actually Irish, but she was a Glasgow-trained nurse," says Caldwell. "She died in 1940, when she was 80. She was a midwife and set off walking through the woods to attend a birth. She never made it."But Betty's tales of thriving coastal resource-based industry, the canneries, logging camps and trollers along the Inside Passage, speak of bygone times. And could anything have changed as much from then to now as communications? Betty called home by mail or telegraph. News came by newspaper or radio. At Sointula, Betty, herself by then the topic of newspaper articles and radio reports, listened to a broadcast about the search for a missing Amelia Earhart.A fisherman admonished Betty. "No woman is worth it. You better hitch a ride across the strait with us or there'll be planes and cutters out looking for another dizzy dame.""I did not know the famous aviatrix," writes Betty of her role model, "but felt a kinship, plus respect and admiration." Neither of the so-called "dizzy dames" -- Earhart, who was not to celebrate her 40th birthday July 24, and Betty, who turned 23 rowing Bijaboji on July 31, fit the 1930s feminine mould. When a watchman tells Betty "A woman is a success when she has been loved, envied and hated," she replies, "That puts me on the failure track. Few men or women would bother to hate me because the things I enjoy and do are not explicitly feminine. None would envy me because I do not excel at the things a girl is expected to excel at and, so far as love goes, I am two weeks over 23 years old and have never been kissed in the moonlight."Earhart, asked by the French press "Can she bake a cake?" after receiving flying awards, said, "So I accept these awards on behalf of the cake bakers and all of those other women who can do some things quite as important, if not more important than flying, as well as in the name of women flying today." Both Betty and Earhart found supportive husbands who put together books about their lives. George Palmer Putnam published Amelia's letters to him, as Last Flight.Betty said she was not "out for a stunt." Her journey was about meeting an individual mental and physical challenge, which is at the core of all adventures. The challenge became huge when Betty swamped in Douglas Channel, losing everything but her canoe and her life. After rescue, naysayers said Betty was crazy to go on. "I rushed out of the cabin to get hold of myself," she writes, "saying over and over in my mind that I would rather drown than arrive in Ketchikan aboard a powerboat. I'd drown myself before I'd let anybody say, 'I told you, a girl couldn't do it."But a girl did do it. Betty Lowman rowed into Ketchikan on Aug. 19, 1937, delighting a proud father. With side trips, she'd covered 2,092 kilometres, twice what she'd planned. The trip changed her life, making her a celebrity. She became a much-in-demand public speaker, travelling all over North America. Betty was 27 when she met Neil Carey, then 19 and in the U.S. Navy. She became a navy wife a year later, and the couple raised two sons, George and Gene.If adventurous female achievement is inspirational, a torch passed from Amelia Earhart to Betty Carey also lit a fire in George, father of two girls. He realized girls were short-changed in physical education in school and started the Volleyball Club in California, which now has 10,000 girls aged 12 to 18 playing volleyball."Most," says Neil, "get offered college volleyball scholarships." Neil and Betty retired to the Queen Charlottes. "The isolation and beauty of the place was what attracted us. We've got enough in our heads to keep us busy. We wanted a nice quiet relaxed life."And Bijaboji? In 1963, when Betty was 49, she rowed from Ketchikan to Anacortes, sometimes covering 40 miles a day. She took short trips in her canoe until 1999, when the manager of the Sandspit Airport asked if Bijaboji could be displayed in the air terminal for a couple of weeks. The dugout, which Betty calls "the world's best and most beautiful sea-going vessel," is still there.Pat Burkette lives on Saltspring Island."Bijaboji has all the elements of a classic novel: a consistent story thread, suspense, a dramatic climatic point, and wonderful detail of the milieu and the characters."—Pat Carrie Smith, Prince Rupert Daily News"Bijaboji bubbles with energy and movement, much like the straits, channels and saltwater inlets through which [Carey] travelled..."—Nicole Pankratz, The Vancouver Sun "...an informative fascinating account."—Western Mariner

You have to appreciate that this book is the diary of an amazing journey that took place in the summer of 1937. It is an account of 22 year old Betty Lowman (Carey) who rowed from Anacortes, Washington to Ketchikan, Alaska in an hand carved cedar dug out canoe barely 14 feet long. The Strait of Georgia, Johnstone Strait, Queen Charlotte Sound and the Inside Passage can be treacherous and a challenge in a 31 ft. sailboat or any modern boat as we can attest to even in the summer. That Betty rowed her dugout canoe and recorded her experience and reflections these many miles is an astounding feat of courage, strength, both physically and emotionally and optimism. You also have to appreciate that in those times you couldn't get weather reports, didn't have GPS, proper charts and navigational aids especially in a canoe! The book also captures a time and place along the B.C. coast of canneries, lighthouse keepers, fish towns, logging and the many varied, interesting people who inhabited the coast and islands. I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful book and felt as if I was part of her adventure and what an adventure it was! Betty inspired me on a recent cruise we took on our boat to different waters. I kept thinking if Betty could do something like this I certainly could be brave as well. NO wasn't an option for this remarkable young woman in a time when most women wouldn't even dream of such an undertaking (nor would they now). She may seem a bit naive and overly optimistic but she had a confidence and determination that is infectious. It is a great read and a great historical account of a time long gone in B.C. coastal history. I highly recommend this book (Betty also rowed from Ketchikan back to Anacortes in "Bijaboji" when she was 47). Even if you don't live in the Pacific Northwest or British Columbia, you will be drawn into Betty's journey and into the lives of the people she meets along the way. "Bijaboji" (named for brothers Bill, Jack, Bob and Jim) is now on view at the Maritime Heritage Center in Anacortes, Washington.

If you've read "Row to Alaska By Wind & Oar" by Pete and Nancy Ashenfelter, you will enjoy this book more. It's the same place only in 1937 and rowed by a woman just out of college using a dugout canoe and oars. The book was only recently finished having been a lifetime project for the author. But it's full of really nice B&W photos of the journey and enough detail that if you were planning this trip it would give you an idea about where the dangerous water lies and the kind of things you might want to bring. A great armchair adventure.

Enjoyed this adventure.

This was a pleasant surprise, a very enjoyable read and a fascinating story. The more obscure "homegrown" memoirs like this can sometimes be rambling and tedious, but this wasn't. It was engaging, interesting, colorful, and so very candid and emotionally honest.

A great read, and a real eye opener about how much this part of the world has changed. A good book for those interested in the upcoming Race to Alaska.

Super interesting book, very fun read!

Great book, but perhaps because I live in the town where the author started from in her red dugout canoe. The canoe is in the local museum.

great

Her Second Chance Cowboy is an extremely well written romance between Chastity and Ben. This story delves into the concepts of trust, communication, being true to yourself, loving someone enough to set them free and so many other common issues that we all share. The story is so well written and the characters are so believable that I could not put down the book. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series.

Chastity has just returned to her home town from New York. Her father passed away and she returns to help her mom with the funeral and make sure things are in order. But she didn’t count on running into Ben, her former boyfriend. Nor did she count on her mom getting sick or a lack of finances.I started this book this morning. It was very engaging and I had to know what happened. One hour and thirty minutes later I had my answer. While I don’t usually read books straight through, it was that good. I’ll definite look for other books my this author.

This book really touched my heart on all levels. Coming back after 10 years was not easy. The guilt for having not been there when her father died and for her mother. Dealing with her mother's sickness. Dealing with seeing her former boyfriend again. Having the need to go back to New York, but not quite wanting to go back. It was a great book! I can't wait until the next book comes out about one of the other Miller brothers!

What can I say, I enjoyed most all of this book so that is why I gave it 5 stars. The characters were well written and as always I got into the storyline. The last of the last chapter was as the authors would say, hot and steamy so I skipped over them. I recommend otherwise.

A wonderful heart felt tender clean romance. Natalie is a very talented author she can weave a journey her characters are on, taking the reader right along with her. Her hero Ben could be any woman’s pick for the perfect loving man! I had to read all the way through until the happy ever after, which was perfectly delightful. I’m so looking forward to rest of this outstanding series.

Western Natalie has done a wonderful job. Between the second chance for Ben and Chastity, you have had them have to deal with the loss of a parent, a giving up on a dream to help her mother deal with her Dementia.I loved it and look forward to see what happens with the rest of the brothers.

She’s has to come home for her dads funeral. She hopes that she doesn’t see, Ben. But he comes to the funeral and both realize that although it’s been 10 years, the love is still there. But so is the difference that separated them

A perfect second chance happily ever after! So glad there are lots more Millers. The sweet romance is done just right.
