My first thought after reading this book was how comforting it was to me. Almost like a parent scooping you up in a hug and saying "It's going to be alright. I've got your back. Here is what we are going to do." I know that may sound silly, but I got more out of this book than any religious type of thing, philosophy etc. (and I'm not religious in the traditional sense). After life's normal trials and tribulations in the past, what I took away from it was like a big clue or door opening into how all of life, both present, future and beyond, works. Gives detailed exercises (& a lot of them) to do/put into practice to get the Law of Attraction (aka LOA) into action working in your life AND how to get rid of the negative things, habits or thinking in your life. So it's not just a "philosophy", but a" how to" book as well. At least it spoke to me in terms that resonated.I will say this. Before even opening the book, IF one's mind set doesn't have the willingness to be open to things beyond what they've already heard about life, experienced in life and traditional (Eastern and Western) religions tell you, AND/OR you're only looking at it this whole concept of LOA, be if from Abraham or in general, with skepticism and a "pooh, pooh" attitude, then it very well might not be the book for you. Just like the saying out there, "If you always do, what you've always done..... then you'll always get, what you've already got".I can definitely tell you the Law of Attraction works, absolutely, no doubt in my mind about it. Believe me when I saw I'm am a very practical, common sense person. I gotta see stuff to believe it. I can tell you that I've seen it immediately happen in my life after getting the concept. One thing is for sure, again....Whatever you put your focus, energy and attention into, is exactly what will be bounced right back to you, whether you are aware of it or not. So get to learning how to deliberately put out good and positive stuff and you will be sure to "receive" good and positive things back in your life. Let the "universe" figure out the "how" of it, that is the Universe's job, not yours.Join the journey. The choice is all yours.

I see more layers with the passage of time and with practice. It only gets better. Not for those who think too much, determined to make things complicated - as I did for years. Practice. I ask myself nearly every day - is it really this easy? It is. Practice.

This is my favorite book I've ever read. I liked it so much that I'm now going to read more Esther and Jerry Hicks (Abraham) books from the Law of Attraction Series. The first book I read of a "spiritual" sort was The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. After that I read many others. I read many from the Eastern religions. Eventually I read many of the Seth books. While I got a lot out of many of those books, Ask and It Is Given is my favorite.What I liked about it so much is that its message is simple, clear, extremely positive, true, verifiable, and massively helpful. I would go as far as saying that the content of this book (an explanation of how to feel good in this Law of Attraction-based existence) is the most important thing anyone could learn and put into practice. Let me give you some of the main ideas from the book. The only thing that matters is how you feel, and you have control over how you feel. Even how much you can benefit others is determined by how you feel, so your attention must be on how you feel. You choose how you feel based on what you are doing with your energy - allowing well-being to flow or resisting well-being. Well-being is always predominant, so the quality of any experience is determined by the degree to which you allow well-being to flow freely. What you give attention to, what you think about, and what you focus on determines how you feel, and how you feel determines what kinds of experiences you have. Bodily health, financial circumstances, relationship situations, and all other details of physical life are faithful reflections of how you feel. The only thing that really matters is paying attention to the way you feel, and allowing your energy to flow in a way that feels good to you.The emphasis on learning from life by listening to your own emotional guidance system and responding to that is refreshing. For the longest time, some part of me just wanted to read something that told me to pay attention to how I feel and choose to feel good. This book makes it that simple, and it is that simple.I heartily recommend Ask and It Is Given to anyone considering giving it a read. Enjoy it.

I have been watching masterchef for a long long time, loving every episode of it, and I truly admire the personality of chef Graham Elliot.One year ago, the second time when I went to Chicago, I visited graham elliot bistro by myself and ate so so much that almost cost me 100 bucks(lol). Food there was truly amazing. The best dish I can remember is called Milk & Honey which might be one of the best and most interesting dishes I have ever tasted in my life.I'm currently a college student and living by myself. College life is not easy and sometimes really stresses me out. Cooking to me is a way to release all the stress and to give myself a nice treat. I feel really relaxed when I grab the knives and cook some beautiful food.This book is loaded with useful contents and gorgeous photos and I love those stories about Graham himself. They are truly inspirational! The recipes in the book are creative yet practical and can be easily applied into the daily life.Thanks for this awesome cookbook and hope the best to chef Graham and his gorgeous family.

The title of Rose’s book clues us in to her first main point: ninety percent of the food we eat and the things that fill our homes, cupboards, offices, and yards comes to us by sea. Her second point is that, even as we depend more and more on ships to bring us all that stuff, the industry has become more and more invisible. Ports have moved to deeper, more secure harbors away from cities; the goods transported by ships are hidden away in generic containers; and many ships fly “flags of convenience” that conceal who owns them leaving troubling questions about responsibility when one sinks (as two do per week) and or when a crew member dies at sea (as do two thousand per year). Rose, a self-confessed landlubber, boards a container ship for a five-week voyage to give us an inside view of it all, from ports to pirates, from storms to the solitary lives of the crew. She has to leave the ship on a few “side trips” to complete her picture (which interrupts the continuity of the voyage) and the reading is slow in spots, but, for the most part, she provides revelation after revelation on a subject I was too ignorant to know how ignorant I was.

This book didn’t deliver at all on the promise of telling the stories about how all our goods are provided by freighters carrying containers of goods. Very disappointing and shallow book. Makes me wonder if there was an editor involved. Perhaps it was a book developed by marketers since there’s a real interest in this topic. But this book just doesn’t deliver. Not even close. Unfortunately.There was really very little in this book about shipping and freight containers. It was a free association by the author during and about her trip on a freighter. A real disappointment!

Do you realize that 90% of the goods we use world wide are transported on the seas around the world and this book deals the container ships and the people who mostly live and work in obscurity. The author hitches a ride on one of these modern day container ships with the largest one being able to carry 15,000 20 foot metal boxes. Do you realize how much product can be moved in one trip. The ship that she rides on hold almost 7,000 containers.She introduces to us the people that are working on these ships and the conditions they work under with more modern technology and less people on the ships. The nationalities have changed along with the wages and the way the owners take care of the crews. The food that was being served on this ship was pretty sad. With modern day news you are probably aware of the pirate problem on long the Somali coast and there is a chapter or two that deal with this which in my opinion is were this book bogs down a little bit. She also talks about the merchants from the time around WW 1 and WW2 and especially moving story about Diana Jarmin. There is a chapter about all these boats and ships on the water and the effects on the sea life.I would give this book a 3 1/2 star rating it is a decent read.

Rose George's book is shows us a small slice of what the shipping world is like. George experiences first hand a tiny sample of life on a ship and looks into the lives of some of the characters she meets along the way. Her account includes a bit about piracy, working conditions, economic inequality, environmental issues, and everyday life on a ship. I think her insight is valuable, especially for those wholly unfamiliar with the shipping industry. Could it be more complete? Sure. I think that the shipping industry is so huge and complex that to deep dive into each of its facets would result in an unreadable mess. George is a journalist and her writing style makes for an easy, enjoyable read. If you are interested in the shipping industry, you'll enjoy the book.

Seafaring life sounded dangerous yet fascinating. My relatives in Ireland continued going to sea, but I realize that fewer did so in each succeeding generation, and this book explains why. Most ships fly "flags of convenience" from countries that have little to do with the ship or crew itself. The crews can come from anyplace, and the ownership of ships is often buried in layers of charters and corporate fronts.The author goes on a trip from Britain to Singapore on a Maersk ship with a British master and an international crew. We get to know the master, who is at the end of his career, and many of his crew members. She details just how monotonous the trip is, and how dangerous it is as the ship goes around the Horn of Africa. The crew sizes were much larger, and cargo loading and unloading was done by hand. A ship might be in port for weeks while its cargo was unloaded and new cargo loaded.The author explains how today ships have much smaller crews. With containerization loading and unloading takes hours instead of days or weeks. The city docks in port cities are closed, and now the ships pull up to container ports far away from the centers of the cities. The crews get little or no shore leave, so basically they spend months confined to the ship with no release from the monotony.I found the book fascinating, but I was disappointed to see that seafaring life isn't what it was in my great grandfather's time. In some ways it has improved (seaman aren't locked in chains or shanghaied like they were in his day), but in other ways it has gotten worse. Being a seafarer has never been easy, and the author effectively conveys this message. However, I always thought being a merchant seaman would be an adventurous life, but that era apparently has passed. I find that very sad.

I am not crazy about the Descubre series, but it is what they use at school.I bought the book (used) to have a copy at home and not carry the somewhat heavy book back and forth.Pros:• Each chapter has a section with information about a specific cultural topic, these sections are very interesting.Mixed:• Every page is very busy visually. I find it distracting.• The order of lessons doesn't seem all that logical to me, and although the grammar is fairly well explained I find it too sparse.• Each chapter ends with one-page vocabulary list. I don't particularly like learning vocabulary the way it is done in Descubre. Too many nouns, nouns, nouns, (socks, cashier, tie, cash register, belt, etc etc in one chapter – now, who needs to know this when first learning to speak?)• In my mind there is not enough focus on verbs, which are so essential to learning to actually speak spanish!If you want an alternative:• I recommend a different set of books: "Easy Spanish - Step-by-Step" and "Advanced Spanish" by Barbara Bergstein. The progression of lessons makes sense, there's a lot of practice on verbs. These books are inexpensive and are full of exercises and answers so you can write in the books and keep learning. Bergstein's books are also good for independent study.

When I downloaded this book, I thought I would get a fun look at some “swingin’ cats.” This excellent book delivers that and SO much more. It’s a fascinating history of a distinct period and provides a great look at the history of Las Vegas, the Kennedys, organized crime, and a cast of characters beyond the Rat Pack. It’s a fun read that is also very informative, and even the Kindle edition includes some great photos. I highly recommend it!

In reading through this biography it reiterated what I really already knew. Frank Sinatra was a mean hearted, narcissist who thought he was better and above the rest!It left me feeling saddened for those who befriended him, those who relied on him and his wives and family. I'm left wondering if he truly cared about anyone or anything! He was just a punk. Skinny and homely with in my opinion, a so so talent as his ugliness always shined through to me.Now, Dean Martin, he's another story. A beautiful voice and style. So handsome with a great lackadaisical personality. I felt he was one of the pack who went along for the ride but stayed true to himself. As he aged, I felt he fell into a deep depression and was sad and lonely but really wanted nothing to do with Frank or that lifestyle any longer. He wanted to answer only to himself which I'm happy he could do.Sammy Davis, what cruelty was constantly bestowed upon him but what a fighter he was. Through all his heartache, work and tenacity, he paved the way for so many. He was ahead of his time and I must wonder would his life had been better or worse had he never crossed paths with Frank?Peter. I've read enough about Marilyn Monroe to wonder why more was not said about the death and Peters possible involvement in it? Her death just seemed to be a blip in this story. And I also must ask, why did Joe DiMaggio dislike or distrust the rat pack so much as to keep them all at bay during her funeral, that wasnt even mentioned in this book. I'd hoped that would have been talked about in more detail. Well, another book, another time.The book flowed nicely. I learned a few things I hadn't known before, like the fact that Jack Kennedy had been married and divorced prior to Jackie. It's a short paragraph at how the mob brushed that information under the rug.....can this be true as I've never heard this news before. And the Kennedys had such close relationships with the mob.....Interesting.All in all a good read. I recommend it for those who are interested in this era and these guys.

I, like everybody over 70 years old, followed the days of the Rat Pack as it progressed through the evolution of Hollywood and Las Vegas. This book gave me information and insight that was not available to me at the time these artists were at their peak. It did confirm that Frank was indeed the overbearing individual I always thought he was as well as proving the relaxed demeanor of Dean. The biggest surprise was the truth about Peter Lawford. Whether you lived through their height of popularity at the time or came upon them later by way of their reputation you will enjoy reading how life was for the rich and famous. And I still enjoy the You Tube videos of Dean in his unrehearsed skits with other famous performers and dignitaries.

I did like it, it was a very good reading.There is a lot of information, details and very good point of view from the author, which seems impartial. However it's not a linear book , the ideas and informations come and go in a very chaotic way. The author tells about Frank and then skip to Peter Lawford and so on. There is a mix of periods, for instance , the author talks about 1950 events and then goes to the sixties and back to fifties , this is very confusing. But all in all,it worth your time, is a very good read, if you pay attention

Frankly speaking, no pun intended, I did not like this book. I threw it away about 1/2 into it - because I had not read a single thing that was new about members of the Rat Pack. Maybe I've lived too long and read too much about them already.

See aboveLearned as much as possible of the Rat Pack.You will enjoy this book. I for sure did and never attended a life performance.

Another interesting expose' of what Americans call the Entertainment World. An era selected to dissect and perhaps to evaluate, to review, to compare with other times. A chance to explore why some choose a way of life that many find disgusting. The writer pulls a section of time and place to showcase and does it very thoroughly. Other writers do the same with the Roman Forum, Madison Avenue, historical conquerors of varied genres and so for those who lived in the Rat Packs' generation this book will perhaps fill in gaps in information that they will find enlightening. A well written investigative report on the Rat Pack.

This is a great story, not only of the individual members of the Rat Pack, but of Las Vegas and its colorful characters, and the period of history in which the story is set. Although much has been written in greater detail about the same subjects, this book gives a good summary of their life and times and the influence they had not only in show business but as pop culture icons.
