My curiosity piqued, I bought this on the merits of its great title alone. And subsequently was most glad that I did, as I found this book very very interesting. It was published approximately 11 years after the end of WWII, and bears a certain attitude unique to it being so relatively recent. The author was t-h-e-r-e and expertly describes his personal view of a window into time. While there are certain passages which are definitely aimed at a reader with next to zero knowledge of submarines, they are regularly overshadowed by many fascinating pieces on topics/tactics which I had never come across before. Again, the writer’s proximity to events – both personally and temporal – gives this book a unique viewpoint. I found Mr. Gallery’s thoughts regarding aspects of the ‘bad torpedo’ problem and of the Nuremberg Trials particularly absorbing. There is a lot of action in this work, I assure you it’s far from a dry recitation on how the two Battles of the Atlantic were fought.I heartily recommend this book.

This is a really excellent book about the U-boat and anti-U-boat war in the Atlantic in WWII. Although it's focus is on how the U-505 was captured by the antisubmarine Task Group under Adm. Gallery's command and his own direct decisions which culminated in the capture, the book encompasses a lot more. It discussed the broad context and history of the submarine war in the Atlantic from both the U.S. and german points of view; discusses submarine design, weapons and tactics; antisubmarine weapons and tactics; the history, personnel and war cruises of the U-505 leading up to its capture;and the history and actions of the Task Group. Throughout the book, the people are well discussed. Ultimately, the activities of the capture are described in great detail from the U.S. Navy's and the U-boat's perspectives. The writing is clear. Overall, the book is very well researched, organized, written and exciting to read.

Rear Admiral Gallery (one of the three brothers who were discharged from the US Navy at this rank!) wrote the story of the boarding of the Nazi sub U505 during WWII. At the time of the events described by the author he was commanding a task force of an air carrier and destroyers charged with hunting German subs. It was his idea to form and train a boarding party that would be able to capture an intact Nazi sub. The main theme of the book is the history of U505, from the laying of its keel, through its lone wolf career. and up to its capture by Gallery's men, and finally its final task, serving as an exhibit in Chicago science museum. Parenthetically we get a fair description of the German submarine effort to destroy allied shipping on the Atlantic, on service and morals, on politics, war, and God. Despite being an author of ten books (five of them fiction), Gallery is no Shakespeare. His prose is full of cliches, mixed metaphors (e.g. "...the Old Man Death knocking like a lusty young giant..."), and countless repetitions. The style is in the best (or worst) of The Brady Bunch tradition and reflects the authors rather simplistic philosophy of life. Nevertheless, despite its shortcomings, it is a vivid though a mite tedious yarn of the life and (mostly) death struggle during the Battle of the Atlantic

An excellent tale recounting the actual events that led to the capture of U-505 and its final resting place in Chicago. Definitely on my to-do list. This is nothing like the move, U-571 with Matthew McConaughey, this is good. The pace is well done and the recounting of actions in the North Atlantic are superb. I would also point out, the author, Daniel V. Gallery is a man of strong, conviction and faith. He addresses the moral points of wart I’ve never read in such detail. He goes into detail when Rader and Doenitz are tried for war crimes at Nuremburg. He had no problem with the Nazis being tried, but those in the Kriegsmarine is another story. They were tried for the same actions Gallery, Nimitz and King performed-unrestricted submarine warfare. He found it a bit hypocritical to say the least. I enjoyed his analysis of the current geopolitical situation and how we viewed our enemy at the time-The USSR. Remember, this book was published in 1956. I’ve read other works that held the same sentiments and fears regarding the experimentation with nuclear subs. They would be much deadlier than the S and U-boats of World War Two. They knew they would be lethal but they could not imagine the capabilities these new weapons would carry. I didn’t mean to get off point, but that’s how moving I found the story. Gallery holds nothing back describing how Germany almost completed strangling England to death and cutting off the shipping lanes to Russia. In 1942, the situation looked bleak indeed. But as in all wars, we started to win the technological war while the Germans fell behind. And it happened literally in the nick of time! Another six months and the U-Boats would have dominated the seas, but new radar and sonar devices allowed us to hunt down the killers of the depths. Who will like this? Any World War Two buff wanting to know more about the Battle of the Atlantic.Five Stars

More than a tale, an education of war at sea. I really enjoyed the richbackround. Is there any more?

This story is one of the best world wwII books I have read. Having seen and been through the U505 in Chicago years ago I wished this book had reached me before I did so. It beats any military saga I've read thus far.

This book is the bible of acupuncturist, the book came in excellent condition, really protected.I was looking for this one and is the cheaper price, buy it.It was faster than barnes & noble and cheaper

I love this book. I bought this 5 years out of school. I WISH we had used this book for my classes. Clear, concise, easy to understand. The pattern of the chapters are repetitive but I think this is good! Very pleased. Wished I had bought it sooner

It is a very interesting topic to read and obviously a complex topic. All the more reason why the writing style should not be so cold and monotonous. Unfortunately, there are sections that are repeated verbatim in the book which is distracting (paragraphs repeated within the same chapter or in other places). Not sure if it is an issue in the electronic version only or if it is the same in the printed edition. There also needs to be some proper editing and general housekeeping (same font size, etc.).

major improvement in layout from other editions-better type, nice colors that divide sections. Pricey, but glad I got it to study for Boards.I don't necessarily agree with all, and annoyed that Boards are TCM that are open to interpretation. That being said--a must for licensinguntil such time as revamping back towards Classics.

My honest review: nice book, excellent content. Only, that it came damaged. I am not returning it because I really need to study it.

I really love this book. It has everything you need for the beginner to the advanced. Great for boards, clinic and as a reference book! Namaste'

Clear. Explains very well the topics that your teacher may not explains well enough in class.

What can you say about Giovanni Manioca but he's brilliant and this text book is essential for anyone wanting to apply TCM in practice or personally.

Coming off his great story collection, You Private Person, Richard Chiem’s first novel King of Joy establishes Chiem as one of the most singular writers working today. The book focuses on the protagonist Corvus as she navigates a wonderfully hazy plotline full of porn sets, avant-garde playwrites, pit bulls, movie theater jobs, and guard hippos. But the driving force of the novel is a tale of survival - both physical and emotional - and Corvus’s refusal to succumb to the many traumas she’s endured. Chiem’s language is unlike any I’ve read - at times strangely precise, at other times perfectly vague. It carries the consistent, heavy mood of a film and the emotive reach of the many pop songs scattered throughout the novel, forming a sort of literary playlist. King of Joy is a book that couldn’t exist at any other time, and I’m glad to be here for it.

This is quite a novel. A meditation on grief, emotional and physical connection, and the ways we cope when that thread is severed, while at the same time managing to be quite humorous and wildly absurd. The novel is told in a fever-dream style, lacking punctuation for dialogue and telling the second half of the story before the first half. Every stylistic choice Chiem makes in this work only serves to emphasize dramatic and emotional pulse of the climax—and you’re going to feel it. A gut punch, to be sure. One you don’t see coming at the same time that it is as obvious as a freight train.A self-destructive heroine who shines brightly in her secret interior life, Corvus (meaning “raven” in Latin), the reader can’t help but to feel pulled into the orbit of her strange magnetic chaos in this story. This book toes the line between realism and absurdism. It reminded me of Chuck Palahniuk in the style and sense that the characters live in this world of topsy-turvy pandemonium and find it fairly normal—all that tumult is just background noise to their own specific and absurd issue.I truly loved every second and highly recommend this one.My thanks to Soft Skull Press for sending this one my way to read and review.

These books are quite tiny, as in pocket-size. The original hardcover is a standard size book, but not this edition, although the only difference in the heading is paperback versus hardcover. While poetry can be lovely in pocket size books, detailed cartoons suffer in the miniature edition. In the original, the cartoons are wonderful. Fabulous gift of laughter for someone who is hospital-bound, which was my intention, but this edition is too small to be fully enjoyed, especially by anyone with vision affected by age/illness. Oddly, even though it was only two weeks after receiving the books when I tried to return them (because they are just too small for the older patients for whom these are intended) according to the Amazon site these are only eligible to be replaced with others of the same item, these are not eligible to be returned for a refund. Peculiar because Amazon has been good about returns in the past. Go figure. So be careful to check the size listed in the fine print on each edition that you consider before you order!

First off, the book is tiny. I mean really tiny. It's about 3 inches square. You can't discern the mini size from the Amazon picture, so be prepared. And, correspondingly, the cartoons are very small and may be hard to read if your eyes are over 45 years of age.The editors have culled together what are ostensibly the most humorous of the doctor-related cartoons from the New Yorker. Because humor is in the eye of the beholder, I can't say if they succeeded. All I can say is that there were a few gems for me, principally those by Gahan Wilson and Charles Addams. The average entry made me smile a little on the inside, but not much more than that. The New Yorker Book of Doctor Cartoons can be useful if you are in the position of needing doctor related visual humor on a regular basis. I could see this book of value to people who give presentations about health care, doctors, or medicine. I could also see this book as a nice (but did I mention TINY) gift to give to the doctors in your life. Doctors who can laugh at themselves will appreciate the humor. I know. I laugh at myself all the time (and yes, I'm a doctor). While not about doctors per se, an alternative to consider is: The Party After You Left

I got the paperback and I'm returning it. This is a tiny, four-inch-square, very unimpressive little book printed with pale ink. I got it for someone's birthday and would have been embarrassed to give it to him. The few cartoons I looked at did not strike me as funny, either. I wish I had read other reviews before buying it. It is way over-priced, but not of interest at any price.

My brother is a doc, who loved receiving this book!It is on a main coffee table in the living room for everyone to see!Later, it will go to the desk at his main office!

Not any funny cartoons in this book. Disappointing.

creative cartoons .. enjoyable read

repeat customer!

This is a little book, but great as a stocking stuffer. My husband was looking for doctor comics to put in his office to entertain waiting patients. This fit the bill.

This is an amazing book!(must read) i love all the new tribes and for future books i suggest a wind dragon. That would be awesome anyways great book you should read it.

My son was extremely disappointed that the author wrote in a female dragon having more than a crush on another female dragon. It ruined it for him. This is a kids book. Very disappointing.

My son (age 11) is a huge fan of the book series, and this one is LOVES. To the point he shoved it in my face and said that I have to read it. Took me a few days to sit my 36 year old butt down, and start reading it. And WOW. Its a really good book!!! Highly recommend it!!!

This is the eleventh book in the Wings of Fire series and starts a new storyline on a new continent we have never visited before. Although some of the story elements are very similar to previous books, I did really enjoy meeting new characters and exploring both whole new types of dragons and a whole new landscape. I continue to read these mainly because my son reads this series and likes to discuss it with me; however I actually really enjoyed this book! This book starts with a prequel featuring Clearwater and her journey across the seas to a new continent of Dragons. The new continent is called Pantala. There are new types of dragons on Pantal including HiveWings, LeafWings, and SilkWings. After this prequel we journey many centuries into the future where a SilkWing named Blue is preparing for his Metamorphosis along with his sister Luna. This book introduces a whole bunch of new dragon types and some great new fun characters. I loved Blue with his quiet tentativeness and Cricket with her non-traditional HiveWing views. All the characters in here are a lot of fun. The new world is interesting as well. There was a lot of adventure, some awesome fight scenes, and lots of new and interesting dragon-abilities and politics.Overall this was a fun and quick read that I enjoyed a lot. I really enjoyed the new and creative setting and the new types of dragons. My son also really loved this book. Sutherland continues to write an intriguing adventure fantasy series that has fun characters and is highly entertaining to read. Recommended to those who enjoy middle grade fantasy adventure featuring dragons.

I have been itching for this book to come out!!! I started reading a 3:40 and its now 7:49. I finished 10 minutes ago! Great book! Love all the new tribes. Characters are so loveable!Wow! I have no words!

The Lost Continent by Tui Sutherland was simply an amazing read. The new tribes and continent, Pantala, were all original and the characters were fleshed out. I found Danaid and Luna as my two favorite characters. There was a younger Foeslayer/ Fatespeaker- like character who, although entertaining, wasn't very original. I also assumed from the summary that they would ALL be going to Pyhrria, when, in fact, only ONE dragon, who was not the main character, saw Pyhrria and THAT was at the end of the book. I also assumed that we would see the main character after his metamorphosis, but we didn't. Additionally I would've liked to learn more about what happened to Clearsight and the origin story of the HiveWings, but, oh well. I do think that, altogether, my favorite part was the epilogue. I'm probably biased because I read her book first out of all the Wings of Fire books, but Moon has always been my favorite character, so I'm positively thrilled that she'll be playing a part in this series.

Good book so far! Will update when finished.UPDATEIn-book-spoiler free reviewAMAZING, AS USUAL. There were some odd twists and turns that got me confused, but that's nothing compared to the endless possibilities of this book. RECOMMENDED READ - ESPECIALLY FOR WINGS OF FIRE FANS!

I was up at 12 for this book and it was worth it! You know that feeling where you know stuff the characters don't becuase you read the other books? Well I had that feeling THE WHOLE TIME. I hate but love it. Like you wish they just knew and you are like "Just sit down and explain everything already!!!" but hten you like have to read more. A very smart device Tui. So I have been waiting for this for tooooo long. I got the first book in the series 5 days after it came out and after that I read every bool as soon as it came out. I totally thought they would be named like Hiveclaws or tails, but I suppose Clearsight would have named them so... Ok so i totally get where Blue is coming from, takong others perspective and having a ton of empathy. I used to be like that as a kid, crying over those times in a movie where some persons hard work goes to waste. I also love the flamesilk concept, like less powerfu animous dragons. Anyway this was an amazing book likee all the rest, except the seawing ones, I didnt like those… no they were good just not aaas good as the others. Aanywaaay I love these books sooooooo much

"As resourceful for architects and policy-makers as it is for anyone interested in how we live now... It enlightens on everything from climate to crime to culture. As a data-driven study, it has a proven takeaway: civic participation is key to defining metropolitan problems while design is key to providing the right solutions."—Aesthetica

Had the great honor to have had a semester of U.S. History with Dr. Zinn, my freshman year of college. I was the only African American student in the class, and I was affected greatly from hearing him speak daily on the intricacies of what was and what wasn't in the seminal history of the country: that which is the congealed narrative of a master race or that of those affected by the impudence of power. Moreso, power run amok. Howard was my mentor, and my friend. Don't buy a summary. Read the book. I still have the textbook he assigned me.

In short summary, this book is basically propaganda and should be renamed "All rich people must die." But let me get into the details. This book actually starts off really great! Zinn starts out warning the reader he will not be taking a neutral stance and says he will view history only from the oppressed. He then starts off doing just that, watching the invasion of the Americas from the point of view of the natives, the revolution from the poor, slavery from those enslaved, etc etc etc. All good stuff, and I really enjoyed these parts. It was a great look into all the atrocities that have been dealt in the name of civilization, and a fresh remainder of the human cost to get us where we are today. It was also a solid reminder that just because something is law, or generally accepted, doesn't mean it is right, and we need to constantly challenge our perspectives. But then, something really sinister happened. Zinn slowly but surely slid this book from a history of the oppressed to outright propaganda against anyone rich and anything capitalist. It starts slowly, around the point where the poor felt taken advantage of by the rich as America was being colonized. My BS meter started ringing as I noted how Zinn would change how he described the poor and the rich. The poor were always broken down into individuals, with history and struggles aplenty, and there transgressions against each other deflected to others. Meanwhile, the rich and powerful were always described in blocks, as one mass thinking-breathing unit that plotted and schemed to keep the poor down. Let me provide some examples of both.Apparently, according to Zinn, poor whites only discriminated against blacks because the rich told them to. Apparently, according to Zinn, poor whites invading Indian land was only due to rich people forcing them to. Apparently, according to Zinn, non-land owning whites were only given the right to vote so the rich could keep exploiting them. Apparently, according to Zinn, all the reforms passed to give workers the right to vote around the 1900 mark was only down so to stop the poor from rioting so the rich could continue exploiting everyone. Apparently, according to Zinn, everything any rich or powerful person ever did in their life was done as a concentrated act of evil to hurt those without money. It's insane the mental hoops this guy jumps through to make good acts, like giving workers rights and people the vote, seem like nothing but a evil tool used by the wicked rich to hurt people! I mean, come on!The level of bias grows and grows as the book goes on, until about 50% I just hit the end of my tolerance. At this point, all the fighting the workers have been doing for rights and respect in the workplace is starting to bear fruit, and Zinn calls every win an evil deed JUST because it keeps the "capitalist system" propped up.I mean, I know that sounds like a dumb thing to say, but he really does this. A rising middle class? A buffer for the rich to keep the poor down! The right to vote? A tool to make the poor complacent! Racism? Engineered by the rich to keep the poor divided! Are you poor and did something bad? Guess who Zinn feels is really to blame . . .So I'm just done. Call me a wicked capitalist, but I just can't see how touching money suddenly sucks out all your humanity and hooks you into the rich-and-powerful hive mind, deserving of death. And I certainly don't want to waste my time reading a book by a guy who's trying to force that viewpoint on me, under the guise of a "history" book.

A wonderful book that will change how you see the world, much like Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee did for those of us who grew up watching Hollywood westerns. It presents history of farmers, slaves and factory workers in a way that is different, more human, and more believable than what we were taught by the public schools. One of my top 5 books, and I've read many hundreds.

A more honest, if less glorified story of the United States, including lots of things our country would rather you didn't hear about. It will never pass the local School Board's muster, which is why your should read it.

I am a retired educator with two Masters degrees from reputable universities. As broad as my education has been, I would not call myself truly well-educated without having read this classic adjunct to the typical canon presented at most institutions of higher learning. I have bought multiple copies over the years, as I tend to give them away to people who I think may be ready to open themselves to one of the most well-documented and unflinching historical records of the United States.

Bought this book for a history class. Started reading but couldn’t believe the bias and blatant disregard for honesty I found in this book so I decided to just drop the class.

Reads like a novel. I hated social studies I’m high school and I’ve developed a new found love of history. This book made history come alive and was far more authentic than what is taught in a traditional social studies class.

This book is so important for the national discussion. And, this book is a great contribution to the "People's" actual history of the United States. I just received this book as a resource - I could not put it down. I took a break to see if Howard Zinn is alive and how I might meet him. Unfortunately, all that we have are his Books, Plays, Interviews and Reflections. Being a playwright has certainly influenced his historical writings and style in this book. History is a story and he tells that story with great detail and courage. In addition, his truth is the truth of all of America since his perspective is from the viewpoint of the Indians when Columbus landed, the factory workers, women, African-Americans... This is a must read.
