NIce sized handbook. Great for a young scholar to pore over. I'm not sure how it compares to the full-sized book, which in homeschooling circles is called the "white Kingfisher". The full sized version is very sought after, and, hence, highly priced. I hoped this would be a good substitute, and it is working out well. An older student is using it, and the smaller print, makes the pictures a little less lovely, but makes it feel like an older text companion. Since it is title "concise" I assume, it has less content than the full-sized version, but it is needed as a supplement, for homeschooling, and I do not mind sacrificing the size and number of entries, a little, for the smaller more portable size, which, as I said, has a more mature feeling, though I suspect the writing is the same. Please note: I have not compared one-on-one, though.

Great little resource book for our home school library. The kids enjoy looking at it the pics and also reading it.

This is a goodt Book! This book is good for my 3rd grade classroom. My students really liked this book.

I LOVE THIS BOOK I want to know all about caffeine, the dangers the heart the industry etc. Just when was was really into this book it was over (the last 30 pages or so were notes I didn't realize I was near the end. The author went around the earth for his research - thats devotion. The book has made me aware - read the label, pace my self, moderation is the key. Hell its not gonna kill me unless I drink those KING SIZE cans or cups ( no names) Kids aren't aware they drink alot (just because the cup holds almost a quart thats not "a cup" Today my "cup" is 6 ounces...... Don't get me started on pain killers coffee ice cream, gum jell bars, etc.....

I enjoyed reading the book. It starts off with a history of the major sources of caffeine: coffee, tea, chocolate. I learned about the caffeine industry, and about all of the various foods and drinks that contain it.Among other things, there are warnings about the danger of consuming caffeine and alcohol together, whether in caffeinated alcoholic beverages or by drinking energy drinks with alcohol.The book ends with (IMHO) an appeal to our legislators to require labeling to disclose not only the presence of caffeine in our foods but the amount too.A lot of good information.

I learned a ton from this book. That being said, the format is a little on the sensational side. Towards the end it becomes much more informative.

I found this great book on the 'new book's shelf at our public library. After reading though it, I have downloaded it to my Kindle library. I'm 76 , have crocheted since childhood and taught knit and crochet classes at a community college for years; This is the best crochet book I've seen. Thanks to the authors and to Lark books for this excellent comprehensive reference. The descriptions and the photography are superb. Well done guys.

I preordered and received my book today. I have not put it down since. It is perfect for me - clear instructions, great photography, logical sequencing that builds on each topic. The projects are items I would wear and cannot wait to make. Very pleased. I have taken several of the Craftsy courses and this is the perfect addition.

This is it, I finally found a comprehensive, exhaustive and very, very clear guide that will give me a wide knowledge on Crochet, thus opening me the way to a lot of patterns I was longing to make but haven’t dared doing so far.I found in the books stitches I never saw (I’m and intermediate crocheter) and wonderful, effective and useful techniques.Everything is explained very clearly and to a very satisfying depth, with clear photos.This book will give you very solid bases and techniques on every aspects of crochet.I first bought the hardcover and when I saw it I immediately bought the kindle version, to have it always with me on the phone when I need some help and I’m away from home.As to the patterns, they are modern and beautiful, no old bo-ho designs here!There are other excellent books on crochet (and I bought a lot), but when it comes to “general” books not specialized in a particular technique, I think that this is THE ONE for me.I absolutely recommend ot to both beginners and intermediate crocheters, though I think that also advanced ones might be interested.

This must be the best crochet course book ever written. I have a few, including the one from Rowan, which goes directly into the stitching almost immediately. This book, however, gives you the why of doing something a certain way. It tells you how to choose the right yarn for the right project, It gives you so much up-front information, that all your questions are answered before you ever pick up the hook and lay it to yarn. In fact, you don't do that until page 72 when you make your first swatch. It is written with humor and compassion and will hold your interest. Everything they teach you is taught in a specific order to help you actually learn the craft. Projects were developed that use the skills taught up to that point. Also, the projects are things anyone would enjoy not only making, but wearing or giving as gifts. You won't find things like granny sqare handbags, belts or doggy coats. What you will find are beautiful garments and an afghan in which you must change yarn colors in the middle of a row. The pictures are gorgeous and very explanatory in themselves even without the accompanying text.There are close to 200 stitches that they teach you and have you make the swatches for so that you will be prepared and accomplished enough to make the accompanying project. Each swatch and or project builds your skills so that you will be able to make the next project and the next.Also, at the end of the book, diagrams for every stitch imaginable is included. I don't know what else they could have included in this book to bring one from a beginner to an accomplished crocheter. Thanks, guys..Great job!

I love to take their courses at knitting conventions, and now they've condensed all (well, not ALL, but most!) of their considerable knowledge into one book. This book is a must have in your crochet library. I have been crocheting for a decade and make mostly cardigans. The section on decreasing stitches is a life changer .These guys have found better looking techniques that are just as easy .The stitch patterns are all well done and include diagrams. Wow! What an awesome book. For someone trying to teach themselves crochet, this book is a must. Sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know. This book is crammed with information. But more importantly, the book is very thoughtfully designed in a comprehensive progressive style that builds on your previously learned skill as you work your way thru it. I really like that each stitch, motif, cable, or pattern stitch includes tutorials, the text (as it would appear in a pattern instruction for a project you might do) and the diagram. So you learn to read a pattern, as you learn to do the stitch. I can watch you tube tutorial on how to crochet a new stitch (very helpful). But if you can’t read a pattern, you can’t make all the beautiful designer projects out there. This book is a wonderful teaching guide, reference guide and tool in my journey to become a better crocheter. Thank you Shannon and Jason for helping me get to the next level.1

Imagine taking a 100-year-old shoe box worth of clippings of "true crime" newspaper stories, more or less sorting them in order of perceived heinousness, and printing synopses and you more or less have this book.Such analytical/prescriptive passages as exist are facile and shallow. E.g. , bad people can kill a lot of people with semi-automatic weapons, let's ban them. Absolutely no reckoning with the Constitutional and practical complexities of the gun debate in America. No attempt to wrestle with the issue of how we handle the seriously mentally ill in the wake of the trend to de-institutionalization. It's analysis by bumper sticker.Admittedly, some of the anecdotes are interesting in and of themselves, hence the second star. But the book fails to deliver on its subtitle.

Engaging and fascinating from the very beginning! The New Evil grows in intensity with case studies that will give a chill down your spine. Even if you are a study in true crime, there are details about real life cases that you’ve never heard. Fully recommended to anyone interested in true crime, psychology, and the human condition. Well written and filled with details that make you feel like you are present as the crimes are being described. Not for the faint of heart. A true masterpiece!

I thought it was perfect to kick the book off with a horrific crime, lead us into learning the scales, and have at least one case to help illustrate each point of the scale to help readers understand the qualifications of each category.From there I read dozens of cases and played along guessing the categories along the way and checking my work.The book is a true crime delight; both terrifying and educational, my two favorite things!

I haven’t finished the book yet but so far I’m loving every word. I love true crime and the study of human behavior behind them. As a lover of true crime, serial killer knowledge and a criminal justice student, I found this book to be very informative and thorough. I found it captivating and hard to put down. Every time I read a little more, I find myself more knowledgeable about these psychopaths in the book. Highly recommend!

If you have any interest in true crime, psychology, or the depths of depravity humans can reach, this is a MUST read.

This is a brilliant book, and brilliantly fun to read. Carter analyzes the women in the work of the Marquis de Sade, gleaning remarkable insights into how women survive in a man's world (hint: virtue will get you nowhere). This book is everything that literary criticism should be—surprising, clever, and offering a new way to look at the world around you through the prism of unlikely heroines. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Ms. Carter was far ahead of her time -- this is at once a classic work but dead on current with contemporary thought and events in modern feminist thought. A must read for anyone interested in the politics of gender.

There is little in the way of analysis of Sade's thought in this book. As philosophy, or simply as nonfiction, the author presents ideas then contradicts them then rambles on to another topic. A good chunk of the book is about Hollywood movies.The premise is important. The execution is not. The writing style is pedestrian and the vocabulary is too limited.There's no Sade, no Sadeian woman, little exercise, and shallow cultural history. Surprisingly bad book from a usually very good writer.

It was a short and concise story of the man who brought reformation and gave the common people the bible in their own language and removed explicit authority to the Roman Catholics priests and clergy. I thoroughly enjoyed the snippets of personal quotes that told on few words his reasons for what he believed to be the true and right way to view scripture and the Christian life. I was able to read through the whole read in less than an hour and learned some interesting tidbits about this great man who saw himself as not great but a man who just wanted to bring the word of God to common man. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend to anyone interested in this man's life and who study to know more about how the reformation started and why.

Reading this book was a great joy and time well spent. It gives an excellent view into how Martin Luther thought and the seemingly legitimate complaints he had with the Catholic Church.This book came highly recommended to me and I am sure excited that I too can highly recommend it.

This book gives a good overview of Martin Luther. It details the reasons for the fallout with the Catholic Church and the courage he had to stand up to the Pope. You will enjoy this book and learn a lot from it.

As a Lutheran, I enjoyed reading a succinct summary of Martin Luther's entire life, including his views, feelings and beliefs. This book gave us a good feel for the man himself.

I always wanted to about Martin Luther. I have a better understanding of the Lutheran church. Very enlightening book. Will read it again soon

There are longer biographical text on the man; Martin Luther, but I doubt there are any more concise volumes that celebrate the man and his ministry.I learned more about Luther from this book than perhaps any other. Its chapters are short and concise and focused on the many aspects that made Martin Luther the man, the minister, and the Reformer that he was. For example, he was a prolific preacher but was scared every time he stood up to preach.If you are looking for a quick read, I would highly recommend this one. Coming in at only 117 pages with short chapters, I believe this is one of the best biographies I’ve read.

Sorry, but this is a very uncritical and laudatory treatment of the madman who was Luther. If you must read this, then at least also read "The Facts About Luther", by Fr. Patrick O'Hare. No, it's not a Catholic slander of the man, as Fr. O'Hare uses only Protestant historical sources.
