Wolf Hollow, by Lauren Wolk

Review

“This exquisite debut confronts injustice and doesn’t flinch.” – People Magazine “Not all books with literary aspirations told from a child's point of view are created equal. But when reviewers draw a parallel between Mockingbird and Lauren Wolk's Wolf Hollow, they are being neither hyperbolic, nor lazy. They are merely doing justice to Wolk's beautiful story.”—NPR, “Best Books of 2016”“Drawing comparisons to To Kill a Mockingbird, Wolk’s lovely novel features a quiet young girl named Annabelle who is stirred to action by a cruel new student Betty when Betty starts bullying a strange (but, as Annabelle knows, kind) World War I veteran named Toby.”—Entertainment Weekly, “Best Middle Grade Books of 2016”“[A] powerful debut…beautifully written.”—The Wall Street Journal“Wrenching and true…With a precociously perceptive girl as a main character; a damaged, misunderstood recluse; and themes of prejudice and bigotry, comparisons to Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ will abound. But Wolk gives us her own story—one full of grace and stark, brutal beauty.”—New York Times Book Review★ “Echoing the tone and themes found in To Kill a Mockingbird…Annabelle's astute observations of the Philadelphia woods and the people who populate Wolf Hollow  will resonate with many readers as they present a profound view of a complex era tinged by prejudice and fear.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review★ “The spare but hauntingly beautiful language paints every early morning walk to school, household chore, emotion, and rational and irrational thought in exquisite detail…  Perfectly pitched to be used in classrooms in conjunction with To Kill a Mockingbird.”—Booklist, starred review★ “[Wolk] realizes her setting with gorgeous immediacy, introducing the culture of this all-white world of hollows, hills, and neighbors with confidence and clear-eyed affection. Trusting its readers implicitly with its moral complexity, Wolk’s novel stuns.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review★ “The tension builds and never lets up. The storytelling here is dignified and the tone is memoir-ish, because Annabelle is remembering the story in the past…The portrait of Betty, an unredeemed sociopath, pulls no punches, and Toby is a nuanced and poignant character, an unlikely hero.”—The Horn Book, starred review★ “The narrative is powerful, complex, and lifelike…Thematically, this book raises some of the same issues as To Kill a Mockingbird, but with social status rather than racism as the basis for injustice…VERDICT: Highly recommended for purchase; a truly moving debut.”—School Library Journal, starred review★ “Lauren Wolk's nuanced and nerve-wracking middle-grade debut takes a close, dark look at how dangerous it is to make assumptions of guilt or innocence based on appearances—and how telling the truth and standing up against injustice are essential, even if the wrongs are not always righted…Wolk has a clean and poetic way with words and her story is finely crafted, haunting and unlikely to be forgotten.”—Shelf Awareness, starred review“Marvelous…A powerful middle-grade tale of friendship, and courage. You know that sense of finishing a book and immediately wishing for someone to talk to about it? That’s how I felt about this stunning new middle-grade novel. Lauren Wolk also writes poetry, and here she fastens words together lyrically to create images and characters that not only float off the page, they tear your heart out… Anabelle’s courage and heart will make it a perfect read aloud also. "Wolf Hollow" is just that wonderful.” —The Christian Science Monitor“Wolk is a writer of uncommon power, and this is an uncommonly clear-eyed look at both the depths and heights of the human spirit. A book meant to be discussed and pondered. Grade: A+”—Cleveland Plain Dealer“Annabelle is an earnest, independent and caring character, well supported by a vividly drawn cast—the kind, the cruel and the gossips in between…Coming-of-age novels specialize in moral dilemmas but rarely as well.”—San Francisco Chronicle“A compelling coming-of-age story…This is a novel for our times and a book that matters.”—San Diego Union-Tribune “Things aren’t at all simple in Wolf Hollow, and that’s the great strength of Lauren Wolk’s first novel for middle school readers…Wolf Hollow is fascinating and fast-paced, driven by Wolk’s exquisite plotting and thoughtful, fine-tuned writing. Reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird, this isn't a book full of happy endings; instead, it gives young readers a ringside seat at real-life moral complexities.”—BookPage“Must not be missed…A sweeping, profound book on the deep courage it takes to be a compassionate human, Wolf Hollow will stay with readers long after the last page is read, and in all probability, long into adulthood.”—Books to Borrow, Books to Buy“Superb…beautifully written…A compelling story [that] will have readers—young and old alike— thinking about it a long time after the final page has been turned.”—Examiner “Wolk’s elegantly told tale is voiced in the past tense by narrator Annabelle, living in rural Pennsylvania in 1943, and opens with the sentence, ‘The year I turned twelve, I learned how to lie.’ Wolk explores the many paths those words open onto with a story that charts a course through bigotry, prejudice, kindness and coming of age with a struggle between right and wrong. “—Cape Cod Times“An emotionally intense YA debut from author and poet Lauren Wolk that will get kids thinking about compassion, justice, the importance of speaking out, and how to judge someone's character…The novel reinforces the idea that to be happy with yourself you have to fight for what's right and do what you can to help whenever you can.”—Common Sense Media“This is the story of the residual effects of war, the harmfulness of bullying, and several different types of prejudices. Annabelle makes an admirable character, as she’s smart, honest and caring, but also flawed and therefore humanized. The plot, in which I had initial trepidations due to the subject matter, turned out to be a much different tale than I’d realized and the protagonist and her family a lovely set of personalities. This book will appeal to readers young and old looking for a mid-20th century setting.”—Historical Novels Review“Deeply compelling and beautifully written…Originally author Lauren Wolk wrote this as a novel for adults. When it was adapted into a book for kids she didn’t dumb it down or change the language in a significant manner…There will be people who compare it to To Kill a Mockingbird but to my mind it bears more in common with The Crucible. So much of the book examines how we judge as a society and how that judgment can grow out of hand…A book unafraid to be uneasy.”—School Library Journal’s Fuse #8 Production (blog)“Brings the reader into a beautifully described world that shows the dark side of humanity as well as the angelic side.”—Provincetown Banner“This book is nuanced with complex adult characters and their motivations alongside the pre-teen protagonist and her classmates and younger siblings. Simply put, it’s moving for an adult to read with multiple deaths, the trauma of military service during wartime, loneliness, and the impact of lies and deception. For an elementary school student, it’s a lesson in bullying, sticking by your family, and friendship… Wolk’s lyrical language compliments the Pennsylvania town circa 1945 navigating audiences through life after two world wars.”—Albany Times-Union “Lauren Wolk’s Wolf Hollow is nominally a book for young people, but its prose is so exquisite, its story so reminiscent of other great works of historical fiction, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ in particular, that I can recommend it primarily and for adults... ‘Wolf Hollow’ is not a comfortable book; the story is sometimes brutal. But it is a powerful, memorable story of love, and of the courage needed to defend it.”—Utah Daily Herald“A riveting read…that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. There are abundant lessons in Wolf Hollow, about judging others, about dealing with those who treat you badly, and forgiving at all costs. A period book with an admirable protagonist – ‘Wolf Hollow’ is an addictive read from first page to last.”—The Missourian“Give this one to children with a passion for justice or an enthusiasm for historical fiction.”—Roanoke Times, gift guide

#9,392 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I am not what you might call a very brave reader. This is probably why I primarily consume children’s literature. I might puff myself up with a defense that lists the many fine aspects of this particular type of writing and believe it too, but sometimes when you catch me in a weak moment I might confess that another reason I like reading books for kids is that the content is so very “safe” in comparison to books for adults. Disturbing elements are kept at a minimum. There’s always a undercurrent of hope running through the book, promising that maybe we don’t live in a cold, cruel, calculating universe that cares for us not one jot. Even so, that doesn’t mean that I don’t sometimes have difficulty with books written for, oh say, 10-year-olds. I do. I’m not proud of it, but I do. So when I flipped to the back of “Wolf Hollow” mid-way through reading it, I want to tell you that I did so not because I wanted to spoil the ending for myself but because I honestly couldn’t turn another page until I knew precisely how everything was going to fall out. In her debut children’s book, Lauren Wolk dives head first into difficult material. A compelling author, the book is making the assumption that child readers will want to see what happens to its characters, even when the foreshadowing is so thick you’d need a knife to cut through it. Even when the ending may not be the happy one everyone expects. And you know what? The book might be right. It is fair to say that if Betty Glengarry hadn’t moved to western Pennsylvania in the autumn of 1943 then Annabelle would not have needed to become a liar later. Betty looks the part of the blond, blue-eyed innocent, but that exterior hides a nasty spirit. Within days of her arrival she’s threatened Annabelle and said in no uncertain terms that unless she’s brought something special she’ll take it out on the girl’s little brothers. Annabelle is saved from Betty's threats by Toby, a war veteran with issues of his own. That’s when Betty begins a more concentrated campaign of pain. Rocks are thrown. Accusations made. There’s an incident that comes close to beheading someone. And then, when things look particularly bad, Annabelle disappears. And so does Toby. Now Annabelle finds herself trying to figure out what is right, what is wrong, and whether lies can ever lead people to the truth.Right off the bat I’m going to tell you that this is a spoiler-rific review. I’ve puzzled it over but I can’t for the life of me figure out how I’d be able to discuss what Wolk’s doing here without giving away large chunks o’ plot. So if you’re the kind of reader who prefers to be surprised, walk on.All gone? Okay. Let’s get to it.First and foremost, let’s talk about why this book was rough going for me. I understand that “Wolf Hollow” is going to be categorized and tagged as a “bully book” for years to come, and I get that. But Betty, the villain of the piece, isn’t your average mean girl. I hesitate to use the word “sadistic” but there’s this cold undercurrent to her that makes for a particularly chilling read. Now the interesting thing is that Annabelle has a stronger spine than, say, I would in her situation. Like any good baddie, Betty identifies the girl’s weak spot pretty quickly (Annabelle’s younger brothers) and exploits it as soon as she is able. Even so, Annabelle does a good job of holding her own. It’s when Betty escalates the threat (and I do mean escalates) that you begin to wonder why the younger girl is so adamant to keep her parents in the dark about everything. If there is any weak spot in the novel, it’s a weak spot that a lot of books for middle grade titles share. Like any good author, Wolk can’t have Annabelle tattle to her parents because otherwise the book’s momentum would take a nose dive. Fortunately this situation doesn’t last very long and when Annabelle does at last confide in her very loving parents Betty adds manipulation to her bag of tricks. It got to the point where I honestly had to flip to the back of the book to see what would happen to everyone and that is a move I NEVER do. But there’s something about Betty, man. I think it might have something to do with how good she is at playing to folks’ preexisting prejudices.Originally author Lauren Wolk wrote this as a novel for adults. When it was adapted into a book for kids she didn’t dumb it down or change the language in a significant manner. This accounts for some of the lines you’ll encounter in the story that bear a stronger import than some books for kids. Upon finding the footsteps of Betty in the turf, Annabelle remarks that they “were deep and sharp and suggested that she was more freighted than she could possibly be.” Of Toby, “He smelled a lot like the woods in thaw or a dog that’s been out in the rain. Strong, but not really dirty.” Maybe best of all, when Annabelle must help her mother create a salve for Betty’s poison ivy, “Together, we began a brew to soothe the hurt I’d prayed for.”I shall restrain myself from describing to you fully how elated I was when I realized the correlation between Betty down in the well and the wolves that were trapped in the hollow so very long ago. Betty is a wolf. A duplicitous, scheming, nasty girl with a sadistic streak a mile wide. The kind of girl who would be more than willing to slit the throat of an innocent boy for sport. She’s a lone wolf, though she does find a mate/co-conspirator of sorts. Early in the book, Wolk foreshadows all of this. In a conversation with her grandfather, Annabelle asks if, when you raised it right, a wolf could become a dog. “A wolf is not a dog and never will be . . . no matter how you raise it.” Of course you might call Toby a lone wolf as well. He doesn’t seek out the company of other people and, like a wolf, he’s shot down for looking like a threat. What Wolk manages to do is play with the reader’s desire for righteous justice. Sure Annabelle feels conflicted about Betty’s fate in the will but will young readers? There is no doubt in my mind that young readers in bookclubs everywhere will have a hard time feeling as bad for the antagonist’s fate as Annabelle does. Even at death’s door, the girl manages the twist the knife into Toby one last time. I can easily see kids in bookclub’s saying, “Sure, it must be awful to be impaled in a well for days on end . . . . buuuut . . . .” Wolk may have done too good a job delving deep into Betty’s dark side. It almost becomes a question of grace. We’re not even talking about forgiveness here. Can you just feel bad about what’s happened to the girl, even if it hasn’t changed her personality and even if she’s still awful? Wolk might have discussed after Betty’s death the details of her family situation, but she chooses not to. She isn’t making it easy for us. Betty lives and dies a terrible human being, yet oddly we’re the ones left with the consequences of that.In talking with other people about the book, some have commented about what it a relief it was that Betty didn’t turn into a sweet little angel after her accident. This is true, but there is also no time. There will never be any redemption for Betty Glengarry. We don’t learn any specific details about her unhappy home life or what it was that turned her into the pint-sized monster she is. And her death comes in that quiet, unexpected way that so many deaths do come to us. Out of the blue and with a whisper. For all that she spent time in the well, she lies until her very last breath about how she got there. It’s like the novel “Atonement” with its young liar, but without the actual atoning.Wolk says she wrote this book and based much of it on her own family’s stories. Her memories provided a great deal of the information because, as she says, even the simplest life on a Pennsylvanian farm can yield stories, all thanks to a child’s perspective. There will be people who compare it to “To Kill a Mockingbird” but to my mind it bears more in common with “The Crucible”. So much of the book examines how we judge as a society and how that judgment can grow out of hand (the fact that both this book and Miller’s play pivot on the false testimony of young girls is not insignificant). Now I’ll tell you the real reason I flipped to the back of the book early. With “Wolf Hollow” Wolk threatens child readers with injustice. As you read, there is a very great chance that Betty’s lies will carry the day and that she’ll never be held accountable for her actions. It doesn’t work out that way, though the ending isn’t what you’d call triumphant for Annabelle either. It’s all complicated, but it was that unknowing midway through the book that made me need to see where everything was going. In this book there are pieces to pick apart about lying, truth, the greater good, minority vs. majority opinions, the price of honesty and more. For that reason, I think it very likely it’ll find itself in good standing for a long time to come. A book unafraid to be uneasy. For ages 9-12.

A girl moves to a rural Pennsylvania town in 1943 and starts bullying other girls and boys. Her cruel behavior sets in motion a story that obviously will not end well for at least one person. Lauren Wolk's focused, persistent writing style is what is charming about this book, but her narrative voice is somewhat deceiving, too. While reading the book, I knew Wolk was spinning a story of sadness, cruelty with some redemption, the importance of understanding and kindness to strangers. I felt quite manipulated. I also feel manipulated in all the positive reviews for a book with a depressing story that ends in a way that fairy tales often end, satisfying but unbelievable. I would not recommend this book to any middle grade reader unless I knew them quite well. We live in an age of trigger warnings and this book definitely needs one. All of these adults who love this book should be careful recommending a book that is more for adults thinking back about their childhood (and how they wish they had overcame a bully) than a book for middle grade readers who may be confused by many aspects of this book (a homeless man who lives in a smoke shed, holes to catch wolves, a strict aunt who seems almost like a stereotype). This is one of those books that librarians love but I am not sure if numerous children or young adults readers will like it. Some will, but many will not. Those who do not like the book should not be bullied because their taste is not the same as certain librarians and educators.

“Wolf Hollow” by Laura Wolk for Grades 5-8In her first novel for young readers, author Lauren Wolk does not sugarcoat the effects of bullying, prejudice, rumors, hate and war. In Pennsylvania’s Wolf Hollow young Annabelle lives in the midst of heavy times, of wars past and present. While she has experienced only silent kindness from wandering World War I vet, Toby, new girl Betty Glengarry is determined to make Annabelle and Toby the victims of her merciless bullying. When tales and rumors fly, when Betty disappears and a manhunt begins, Annabelle is forced to make critical decisions, adult decisions, in order to do what’s right. This is a heavy topic for upper elementary and middle school students, but it’s an important book of heart, social responsibility and the power of one. Read it WITH your kids for great discussion opportunities.

A story written with many life lessons entwined throughout. It was refreshing to read something without four letter words as adjectives. I would recommend this book to the preteen generation as well as their parents.

What an amazing book! Don't let the "young reader" tag put you off. This is beautifully written and I couldn't put it down. And I'm about as far from a "young reader" as you can get. Not a "happy ending" book, but true to life and you won't be sorry you spent the time getting to know Annabelle and her family.

"I had come here to consider serious matters and how I might figure in the scheme of things. Important things. Instead, the stone made me aware for the first time that my life, however long, would amount to nothing more than a flicker. Not even that. Not even a flicker. Not even a sigh."4.5 Stars - only because the main character reads much older than she is supposed to be and another major character reads much younger than he is supposed to be. Overall, this is a gripping and important story written in beautiful, and, at times, eerie prose."My mother shook her head. 'I don’t know, Annabelle. But think about how it feels when your hands are so cold they go numb. How it’s only when they start to thaw out that you realize how much they hurt.'”I completely understand the parallels to To Kill a Mockingbird. However, the main character is really a "Scout" who plays the role of an "Atticus", which makes the whole story less believable (back to my one real contention).Reviews say the novel is for ages 9+, but I think it is more appropriate for 11-13.

"My eating habits had gotten out of control—I was binge-eating late at night because I had spent the day eating as little as possible. The 21DSD made me realize that you don't have to be hungry to see results!"—Alex T., New Zealand"After reading rave reviews, I gave [The 21DSD] a try, and I loved it! After about a week, my cravings for sugar were nil, I was no longer waking up at 4am starving, and I had a lot more energy—no more dragging myself through the day with huge amounts of coffee!"—Sasha B., Washington"I am so thankful for the information and support this program provided me. It literally changed my relationship with sweets and helped me regain my health."—Keri B., Missouri"The 21-Day Sugar Detox was very difficult for me, but I was losing weight for the first time in years! Then you know that it just doesn't work—the cravings always come back. But in The 21-Day Sugar Detox: Bust Sugar & Carb Cravings Naturally, author Diane Sanfilippo offers an easy-to-follow meal plan that'll wean you off unhealthy sweets…" —Women's Health Magazine"I'm a faithful fan of Diane Sanfilippo and her 21 Day Sugar Detox. I really truly believe it was instrumental in jump starting my path to healthy living. I do not believe I could have successfully lost nearly 90 pounds without first squashing my sugar cravings. I am very happy to have been given the chance to pour over the new 21 Day Sugar Detox BOOK before it was even available in stores and to tell you what I think." —author of popular website ohrheally"Diane has crafted a dynamic diet detox book that can help you kick the sugar habit in less than a month: The 21-Day Sugar Detox: Bust Sugar & Carb Cravings Naturally…But you don't have to be a Paleo fan to benefit from her new book. All you need to have is a desire and willingness to improve your health by improving your diet." —Joanne Eglash, The Examiner"The book is laid out in an easy-to-read, aesthetically-pleasing way. Diane doesn't SHAME you for eating sugar, no way! She even shares her own personal history with sugar! Then she explains what sugar does in your body and why it can be helpful to pay attention to your intake. There is SO much structure if that's what you like, and SO much flexibility if that's your game! You can either follow a meal plan or just follow the Yes/No Food List. Or a bit of both!" —Sassy Celiac

My husband and I started this program near the end of last year. It has been the best thing that we’ve ever done. Cutting out sugars has completely reset our bodies and metabolisms. He’s lost over 60 pounds and is at his lowest, healthiest weight and I’ve lost over 50! You definitely need to be in the mindset that you’re ready to start healthy habits and break bad ones. It’s pretty simple, eating whole foods, cutting out sugars and processed foods. It’s been really incredible and has made such a massive difference in our overall health, energy and life!

Hello! I am a 23 year old female, and I am a very active person. I play soccer and go to Crossfit at least 4 times a week. I started Crossfit in September 2013 and learned about the paleo lifestyle. I received Diane's book, Practical Paleo, from a friend and have been experimenting with it since September 2013. In February 2014, my Crossfit gym was having a paleo challenge that I wanted to be a part of. I wanted to further my understanding of a paleo lifestyle so I attended a Balanced Bites Seminar this past January in Philadelphia. Here I purchased Diane's 21 Day Sugar Detox book. A rule in my gym's challenge was to avoid sugar. I decided to do the 21 DSD in conjunction with the challenge at my gym.Prior to the 21 DSD, I had an unhealthy relationship with sugar. I would go a few days eating paleo and then would binge eat sweets. Binge eating sweets has been a problem for me for a really long time. My sweet tooth was so strong. I would crave very specific desserts. Just a bite, a slice, or a piece of a dessert would not satisfy me. Eating one Oreo or one chocolate chip cookie didn't cut it. I'd down like 6 cookies before I felt like I satisfied my craving. I could consume a pint of ice cream in no time. Chocolate....my ultimate weakness. I craved chocolate every. single. day. Every evening I'd say, "Now it's time to end the day with some chocolate." I'd eat candy or snacks just because they were in front of me. I wouldn't think twice about it. My brain would strongly crave these sweets even if my body wasn't actually hungry. I knew that I wanted to build muscle and lose body fat. And I knew that I would not achieve this goal if I kept giving in to my sweet tooth. This book came to me at the perfect time!Because I am active 6 out of 7 days of the week and have had experience with paleo, I decided to do Level 3 with energy modifications. Levels 1 & 2 are NOT paleo. I started the detox on a Monday. The weekend before I went food shopping and meal prepped for the upcoming week. Meal planning and meal prepping is absolutely key to successfully completing the detox. The first week was awesome for me! I was super motivated, ate everything that I prepped, and didn't cheat! When week two rolled around, I STRUGGLED. I legitimately went through sugar withdrawal. Normally, I'd eat paleo for a 4-7 days and then that's when I would binge eat sweets. So when day 8 rolled around, I was ready to binge and I knew I couldn't. I got headaches. All my brain thought about was chocolate. It was hard. Before the detox, I cleared my cabinets of ALL sugary treats. I HIGHLY recommend doing so. The urge to cheat is overwhelming at first.I drank extra water when I was craving, ate green apples with cinnamon, made some of the not sweet treats, and ate green tipped bananas. Almond butter was a saving grace for me. I would eat a tablespoon of almond butter as a treat too. A green tipped banana with cinnamon and almond butter?! YUM!Once you get through the withdrawal, it gets better! I have strengthened my willpower and this is my greatest accomplishment. I work in a school and for those of you who work in a school, you know how difficult it is to avoid sugary treats in the faculty room, classroom parties, school wide events, faculty breakfasts, etc. I was able to say "No thank you" in all of these instances. When I was offered sugary snacks and breads, I stayed focused on my goals. Saying no is such a powerful tool.I have been a bad sleeper since I was ten years old. It used to take me at least one hour to fall asleep. I was always a super light sleeper...the littlest things easily disturb my sleep. Now after successfully completing the detox, I fall asleep quickly. I sleep in such a deep and peaceful sleep. When I wake up, I remember my dreams. I rarely wake up during the middle of the night. Sleep is critical to hormone balance and connected with body fat loss. I know if I continue eating this way, I will be sure to reach my goals,My skin definitely cleared up. The week before the detox, I pigged out on crappy foods (frozen yogurt with lots of chocolate candy toppings, Mexican food, alcohol, and more). My face broke out in blemishes. By the end of the 21 days, I had no pimples. My eyes looked a little brighter too. I learned that sugar directly affects my skin. When I have a pimple, I know it's because I ate a refined unhealthy, sugary treat. My energy levels are more consistent throughout the day. I rarely get that 2:30 feeling. My mind is clearer. Because my body was fueled properly, my Crossfit performance has improved too. I feel great during my workouts. Now that my 21 days and my 30 day paleo challenge is over, I had a cheat day. I ate a bunch of sugar treats to see how I would feel. The result? Pimples, constipated, a little bloated, and most importantly, NOT SATISFIED. It's amazing how the sugary treats just taste like crap now. Cupcakes, cakes, and donuts don't leave me satisfied at all. Therefore I will avoid them. I still love chocolate but feel as though I could easily fall back in to binge eating chocolate habits. Therefore, I will not keep it in the house. At the end of the day, a green apple with cinnamon sprinkled on it tastes awesome. And almond butter=heaven. Find foods that leave you satisfied. When you complete the detox, you start to crave healthier foods. Don't tempt yourself or keep snacks in the house that will allow you to pick up old, bad habits!I also realized all of the HIDDEN sugar that was in my diet before the detox. Sugar is EVERYWHERE. Read the labels. Get educated. When you read the label, visualize how many teaspoons or tablespoons of sugar is actually in your food. The 21 DSD increases awareness, strengthens willpower, improves skin and sleep, and implements good habits. All of the recipes are delicious. The book is readable. The pictures are awesome. (A cookbook with pictures is always a plus.:) The directions are easy to follow. The information is easy to comprehend. The typical diet of modern society is packed with sugar and it is definitely time for a change. Do the detox. Take notes about your feelings, progress, and mental/physical state. It's worth it!

This was a GREAT program for me! My doctor had mentioned the term "pre-diabetic" to me one too many times and I knew I had to start taking it seriously. My initial goal was to give up carbs and sugar on my own, but I don't think I was being realistic - I didn't know which foods to give up (besides the obvious candy, pastries, etc) and which were okay to keep eating. I didn't have a true understanding of how simple carbs and sugar affect your body, nor did I know what the right foods could do FOR your body. Needless to say, my efforts to do this on my own failed within days. A friend of mine happened to share online that she had completed this program, and she raved about it - how much better she felt, physically and emotionally, how much better she was sleeping, etc. I read the synopsis, ordered the book, and decided I could do it. AND I DID! I am currently 26 days free of carbs and processed sugar. I went to lunch with my husband the other day and our server offered to bring us bread. It was my first opportunity, post-detox, to have bread. Maybe a minute after she walked away from our table I told my husband I didn't want to eat the bread - and I meant it, and when she brought the bread, I didn't eat it. I seem to have a whole new mentality these days - I tell myself, "It's not worth it." It's not even something I really have to think about anymore - the 21 days was enough, for me, to make this a lifestyle change and my new normal. The book tells you everything you need to know - what to eat and what not to eat, what to cut out of your diet because of artificial sweeteners, what to substitute, what to order if you're in a restaurant during the detox ... You are never on your own during the detox as long as your book is nearby. You'll learn as you read how to prepare for the detox and what to expect while you're on it. Everything is simple and clear, easy to understand, and easy to follow. If I could offer only one piece of advice to someone doing this detox, it would be this: Be prepared. Cook meals ahead if you need to, stock up on the snacks that the detox allows, take ALL THE FOOD when you go to work so that you have options. The best way I found to beat temptation was to have something healthy nearby to eat instead. I've had lots of friends tell me, "I could never do this. I would fail." If that's what you're thinking, too, let me say this - you CAN do it. You CAN succeed. You CAN change. I was the ultimate glutton when it came to sweets and bread, and my body has suffered for it. I don't want to hear my doctor say "pre-diabetic" ever again, and this book helped me start the journey to a healthier lifestyle. I can't recommend it enough!

I LOVE this book! The 21-DSD introduced me to the Paleo lifestyle back in May, which I now use as a guide to healthy eating. I definitely noticed less cravings when I did the program, and more importantly, no more of that "so hungry I'm going to be sick" feeling at 10:30am! I was never starving or depriving myself, and I unintentionally lost about 7 pounds (which never came back). I appreciate the science included so that I understand some of the recommendations. Most importantly, the recipes are great! I have continued to use them (apple crumble, tortilla-less soup, smoothies). By far my favorite are the Asian meatballs with the bok choy slaw...I'm mad that I've had this book for 7 months and didn't make these before last night! Even if I don't do another 21-DSD, the recipes alone are worthwhile. Diane really nails the flavor combinations!

The book itself has incredible explanations for standard american dialect. HOWEVER DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION. It is basically useless. The pages are cut in half in bizarre formats, the pages are not, numbered correctly, and the text size changes for no reason. BUY A HARD COPY.

As the title says "Speak with Distinction", the emphasis is on "distinction". How distinct the speech described in this book? It is distinct from any dialect in the states--whether is general american (mid western) or new york/boston or southern. It is called 'Standard' in some circles. This stage standard was ( is? ) taught in many conservatories, theater/voice schools across the states. Recently, there is a backlash against this kind of teaching to aspiring actors, and this backlash has resulted in "Knight-Thompson speechwork", whose book is "Speaking with skill: a skills based approach to speech training".What is this book good for? If you want a set of words with a particular vowel (lexical sets), or a particular combination of consonants (start, end and middle), this is handy. This book also contains many phrases, sentences, tongue twisters of a sort. You can use this book as reference and use the dialect/accent (say Jamaican accent) to train your students.

This is the bible on the classic, fancy mid-Atlantic accent. A great book for actors, linguists and geeks alike.

I highly recommend the book. But I don't think I should be made to post in order to continue reading and my studies. I paid for this book and I'm disappointed that a post is required to move on. Not good business. Not nice.

This book is a must have for anyone who wants to increase their voice skills. this is a textbook for my vocal production and audition class. it's necessary for actors to pronounce words correctly. for the everyday person, we must be understood. this book teaches the international phonetic alphabet that covers all the possible sounds spoken in the american language. it is a how to manual that guides you through each sound. this book is invaluable to anyone that wants to improve one's voice. there are plenty drills and exercises in the book for one to practice. the coolest thing about this method is that it teaches you exactly where to place your tongue to make the appropriate sounds. i don't know you but that is very useful. in schools we were taught to imitate and mimic through repeatition. i find it much more easier to learn voice when one know how sounds are produce instead of trial and error. this is a classic book for anyone to get because we all communicate. my teacher and i'm sure many others, call this the bible of voice training. anyone that requires voice for their livelihood must get this book, especially a hypnotherapist or a presenter.

good book for practicing words. Book is as useful as you make it, i see ALOT of potential in it.

Indispensable for those who want to improve their speech

This book is a MUST have for any actor or public speaker. It goes over the phonetic alphabet and teaches you how to say all the vowels and consonants spot on. It helps you shape your mouth and your tongue for proper sounds. It teaches you how to write and read phonetics. If you want to speak well or use a dialect well, this book is needed. This book should be in every actors home! NO EXCUSES! Amazing. Written by the one and only Edith Skinner. Look her up if you do not know her. OWN THIS BOOK!

I greatly enjoyed this book. I've often had mindset and importance of mindset conveyed to me by many of my colleagues over the years, but the way it's delivered in Mind Over Market really speaks to me.Tamara tells it like it is and uses great examples of things that can get us off track (e.g., A negative family member or an abusive client). I also found myself fascinated by medicreation. I hadn't read "The Secret", but I had seen the video and dismissed it as non-sense (in the book she acknowledged that many feel this way), but goes on to explain in great detail how it works and in a way that made sense to me.I think regardless of how long you've been in the business or how many homes you've sold, this book is a great way to get your head in the game and give you the tools to be a better agent.

I am always fascinated with books about the power of the human mind; it is indeed so powerful that it can shape our future. This book will make sure that you use the power of your mind to succeed in life especially in business. This is not mumbo jumbo but a book that is well research; you can easily check for its validity in our everyday lives especially in our quest to succeed in the corporate world.

Loved the practical approach to attitude shifting along with the medicreating practice. There are lots of practical applications to get you 'unstuck'.

Reading this now. I have it highlighted and pages bent...it is a great book to get your head out of a funk.

I would recommend this book to any agent looking to shift their mindset using a more scientific approach. Implement this into your business and your life will change drastically... for the better.

Great step on the road to building any relationship business. I will definitely build on this knowledge. I hope the links are still active.

Wonderfully written. Easy to follow and great motivation.

This really helped develop a new mindset and find a very successful real estate mentor. I am so glad I ordered this book. Every real estate person should read this book.

The Prawn Cocktail Years

While Lindsey Bareham was helping Simon Hopkinson put together his best-selling book, "Roast Chicken and Other Stories", the two of them began to reminisce about hotel and restaurant dishes they had grown up with and always loved; those Cinderellas of the kitchen that we abandoned in our quest for the wilder shores of gastronomy. Classics such as Duck a l'Orange, Weiner Schnitzel, Moussaka, Garlic Mushrooms and, of course, Prawn Cocktail, have all been slung out like old lovers but when made with fine, fresh ingredients and prepared with care and a genuine love of good eating, these former favourites should grace the most discerning of tables. "The Prawn Cocktail Years" sets out to rehabilitate the food we once loved and found exciting. In so doing, the authors take us on a cook's tour of the legendary post-war hotels and gentlemen's clubs with their Mulligatawny and Shepherd's Pie, to the bistros of Swinging London where Pate Maison and sizzling Escargots excited the braver palate. Then there were the first Italian trattorias where Saltimbocca and Oranges in Caramel were the order of the day and the 'Continental' restaurants with their exotic offerings of Beef Stroganoff, Chicken Kiev and Rhum Baba. Recipes for all these old favourites have been brought back to life as well as those classics that were once described as the Great British Meal - Prawn Cocktail, Steak Garni with Chips and Black Forest Gateau. Cooked as they should be, this much derided and often ridiculed dinner is still something very special indeed. The prawn cocktail years are staging a comeback...

If you are boomer or before, you will love the recipes in this nostalgic cook book. Food you haven't thought of in years is detailed here in delicious recipes. Simon is meticulous in his authenticity when recreating the food of our youth. But he also makes sure it's yummy. The narrative makes this great reading. His respect for food that has been mocked helps to see the cliches in a new light. Really a great resource for a theme party but also wonderful for a good meal.

I have owned this book for some time and continue to refer back to it as it is not only a trip down memory lane but Simon does a more than credible effort at updating some old-school dishes from the past which at various times could only be considered appalling. I highly recommend the Prawn Cocktail recipe.Simon's writing style is engaging and humorous whilst presenting recipes that are pretty easy to achieve and best of all taste good!I have a relatively large collection of cook books (1400+) and this one is is in my top twenty books to read and refer back to often.Just one note it is focused on the British cooking scene and so if you are not particularly interested in this then this book may not be for you. Overall I have found Simon to be an entertaining writer who is accurate and witty, which is sometimes a difficult combination to achieve.Enjoy!!

Having had concerns about Lichtheim's first volume of ancient Egyptian literature Ancient Egyptian Literature: Volume I: The Old and Middle Kingdoms, I was wary of the second volume. I am much more pleased with volume 2, particularly with the breadth of the selection Lichtheim's explanation and placement in time of the documents has always been stellar.)The insciptions from private tombs and royal monuments are pretty standard fare (the Egyptians were predictable in their funerary inscriptions) - although the inclusion of the obelisk inscription by Hatsehpsut and the stelae by Thutmose III make for a marvelous contrast. Similarly her inclusion of hymns and prayers from Amenhotep IV (Akhenaton) and Horemheb as well as selections from the Book of the Dead were "must have" documents in any collection of primary documents from the New Kingdom. What sets this anthology apart from others The Literature of Ancient Egypt: An Anthology of Stories, Instructions, Stelae, Autobiographies, and Poetry; Third Edition were the final few chapters. These chapters (on "Instructions", "Be a scribe", "Love poems", and "Tales") provide a much more honest look at life in New Kingdom Egypt, and put a much more human (fragile, flawed, and most certainly less idealized) face on the Egyptians, which is so contrary to the "public" face the Egyptians typically showed on monuments and in tombs. While the Middle Kingdom is usually considered the "golden age" of ancient Egyptian literature, I'll take these heartfelt snapshots of life over what was written in the Middle Kingdom anyday.

One must bear in mind that this is a book that attempts to present the words of the Egyptian rulers (kings, queens, priests, and other key members of the elite) during the 18th & 19th & 20th dynasties that formed what is known as the New Kingdom period of ancient Egypt (approx.1570-1070 BC). Not only is there a good organizational presentation of the literature that for obvious space reasons must be selective, there is a decent attempt to provide a good range of all the types of literature composed during that 500 year period. A daunting task that is well done by Miriam Lichtheim. She provides generally good citations of the sources and additional brief explanatory notes. This book is for the reader who has atleast a moderate knowledge level of Egyptian history during this period and the personalities that populate it.

Excellent service by the vendor: excellent selections of ancient Egyptian literature.

The translations are above par in every respect. I got all three books in the collection but this one by far was my favorite. As a practitioner of Kemeticism or Egyptian polytheism, the hymns in this book are invaluable. It is a wonderful source for anyone following the Thebian Triad.

Finally, a collection of good and readable translations of Egyptian literature which both the layperson and the expert will find useful. Lichtheim has given the academic world a much needed reference with the translations of the text and a good introduction to the social history of the creators and the circumstances of the texts being recovered.

A good book about Egypt

All that it is supposed to be. Not the easiest to read but no literal translation is. But if you want to know what the writings are all about, this is the book.

Good
