This is a brilliant book, and brilliantly fun to read. Carter analyzes the women in the work of the Marquis de Sade, gleaning remarkable insights into how women survive in a man's world (hint: virtue will get you nowhere). This book is everything that literary criticism should be—surprising, clever, and offering a new way to look at the world around you through the prism of unlikely heroines. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Ms. Carter was far ahead of her time -- this is at once a classic work but dead on current with contemporary thought and events in modern feminist thought. A must read for anyone interested in the politics of gender.

There is little in the way of analysis of Sade's thought in this book. As philosophy, or simply as nonfiction, the author presents ideas then contradicts them then rambles on to another topic. A good chunk of the book is about Hollywood movies.The premise is important. The execution is not. The writing style is pedestrian and the vocabulary is too limited.There's no Sade, no Sadeian woman, little exercise, and shallow cultural history. Surprisingly bad book from a usually very good writer.

It was a short and concise story of the man who brought reformation and gave the common people the bible in their own language and removed explicit authority to the Roman Catholics priests and clergy. I thoroughly enjoyed the snippets of personal quotes that told on few words his reasons for what he believed to be the true and right way to view scripture and the Christian life. I was able to read through the whole read in less than an hour and learned some interesting tidbits about this great man who saw himself as not great but a man who just wanted to bring the word of God to common man. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend to anyone interested in this man's life and who study to know more about how the reformation started and why.

Reading this book was a great joy and time well spent. It gives an excellent view into how Martin Luther thought and the seemingly legitimate complaints he had with the Catholic Church.This book came highly recommended to me and I am sure excited that I too can highly recommend it.

This book gives a good overview of Martin Luther. It details the reasons for the fallout with the Catholic Church and the courage he had to stand up to the Pope. You will enjoy this book and learn a lot from it.

As a Lutheran, I enjoyed reading a succinct summary of Martin Luther's entire life, including his views, feelings and beliefs. This book gave us a good feel for the man himself.

I always wanted to about Martin Luther. I have a better understanding of the Lutheran church. Very enlightening book. Will read it again soon

There are longer biographical text on the man; Martin Luther, but I doubt there are any more concise volumes that celebrate the man and his ministry.I learned more about Luther from this book than perhaps any other. Its chapters are short and concise and focused on the many aspects that made Martin Luther the man, the minister, and the Reformer that he was. For example, he was a prolific preacher but was scared every time he stood up to preach.If you are looking for a quick read, I would highly recommend this one. Coming in at only 117 pages with short chapters, I believe this is one of the best biographies I’ve read.

Sorry, but this is a very uncritical and laudatory treatment of the madman who was Luther. If you must read this, then at least also read "The Facts About Luther", by Fr. Patrick O'Hare. No, it's not a Catholic slander of the man, as Fr. O'Hare uses only Protestant historical sources.

About the Author

Bryan Grieg Fry was born in 1970 to a Norwegian mother and American father and educated in the US, attending Portland State University before pursuing a PhD in Australia at the University of Queensland’s Centre for Drug Design and Development. His papers and articles have been published widely in academic journals and in the trade media, including Wired, Cosmos, and National Geographic, and he has appeared in documentaries and television programs. He is Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Queensland where he is group leader of the Venomics Laboratory. He resides in Queensland, Australia.

Bryan Grieg Fry is proving himself to be one of the craziest guys alive on this planet today, although he dances with death every day he is able to pull himself from the jaws of danger to dance again, he acts as if his Russian father inlaws machine gun toting body guards can protect him from danger anywhere in the world.. He really knows how to play dangerously and write about it as well, he should be hero of many boys to the dread of their parents. Besides his crazier side he is a top notch scientist, showing the world that you do not have to be a lab coat bespecktacled quiet person to do good research. Raymond Ditmars excited the snakeboys of the 1950s-1970s, Bryan takes the new age males to anothe level,.! An excellent read, only thing lacking were more photos of his beautiful wife!

Interesting encounters with venomous animals, especially snakes. The book takes you thru many bites and discoveries, which was very exciting. I also learned about Komodo dragons and their poison glands which was very enlightening. I heard that they had dangerous bacteria in their bite and he showed how they were venomous. Last chapter about his wife was unneeded, but maybe she forced him to write it. A little too enchanted with academics.

Bryan Fry is passionate about herps, an insane adrenaline junkie, and has a way with words that leaves me openmouthed at times and laughing til I cry other times. I adore this, and am going to recommend it all over the place.

Learned quite a bit about poison and anti-venin I did not know, like how snake specie it is - not all rattlesnakes are the same! A friend of the Alligator Hunter Steve Irwin who has traveled the world collecting poisonous later testing and development of anti-venom.

Reads like a modernized Bill Haast biography, but more science and more present day madness from one of the great reptile researchers!

Smart well written and easy to read. This is a scientist, who speaks our language, and is not afraid to get dirty chasing reptiles like the rest of us

Amazing individual

I love snakes and all reptiles, but even if you don't I still recommend this book. Dr. Fry is not only a brilliant scientist, he is brilliantly funny. The title pretty much nails it. I loved this book. A sequel would be good.

This book has many errors, and while it may be the best (only?) basic esthetic text for new students, it is often confusing. I have a Masters' degree in Science and in Arts, so it's not like I'm new to school (changing careers), but, some of the chapters leave me scratching my head. I have to get out my old science and chemistry texts. Chapters on chemistry, electricity and physiology are large topics condensed to a few pages and it feels like someone who doesn't know these topics thoroughly is paraphrasing fromanother text; I'm often unsure what they're trying to say.When I read this book, I have to have my laptop and my other books handy. I understand it's an introduction, but I think the basics could be addressed more clearly. And certainly, the errors need to be corrected. It's not awful, there's a lot of good information, but it needs improvement.

This was a great value for my daughter who is studying to be an Esthecian. The school wanted to sell us the book for 70% more. Thank you for saving us the $$.

Bought this for my girlfriend and she seems happy with it. Just be careful and realize it's only for your phone/tablet not computer. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because it can't be used on more platforms.

As a long time electronic music producer, this book gave me some incredible insights into both what I was doing while programming drum patters, and how to improve them. The way the book addresses a dual-audience (live drummers and programmers/producers/"finger drummers") is novel and very well executed, and the examples are not only clearly explained, but end up presenting a great discography as well. Of all the books on technique and production in my library, this might be the one I think is most valuable and has the most information one can't get easily just by looking online. Absolutely a good purchase.

Fantastic book that walks you through the fundamentals ("elements" as the author calls them) of the breakbeat style, and includes numerous examples of classic beats together with recordings. The history lessons and biographies of the genre's key players are alone worth the price of admission. I have to point out, many of the exercises may seem simple, and my 21-year old self would probably have said "Why am I wasting my time on this junior high-level crap? I need to be learning Virgil Donati licks!" My older and wiser self understands the importance of taking an elementary approach, truly understanding the style, and executing its components with precision and with the right feel. Use a click, humble yourself, start slow and really get the exercises down perfectly and make them really groove. It is harder than it looks. Excellent, excellent, excellent!

Love the grooves in this book.It really makes practicing fun when you are learning cool grooves. I got tired of practicing from books that have tons of beats that you would never use or enjoy playing; that is not the case here. Great format and grooves.

As so many others have said, this book is the best, truly the bible! I love the history, love the elements, love the exercises, love the 8 bar phrases. My only concern is will the binding hold up to so much use, as you will use every page of this book. Just get it!

Beginner to advanced drummers, your groove without a doubt will become tighter and funkier by playing the exercises in this awesome book. The transcriptions section of classic breaks from James Brown to The Meters and contemporary breaks from J Dilla's production on the Pharcyde's "Runnin" to ?uestlove's breakbeat outro on The Roots' "You Got Me" are worth the price of the book alone. I was kicking myself for not buying this book sooner--don't sleep!

This book is so comprehensive. The beats are DOPE. It does a great job of keeping you engaged and feeling like you really accomplished learning to play some dope beats. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who loves breakbeats, funk, and hiphop

What a delightful book! The purpose is laid up right at the outset (Page 5): "One of America's most popular pastimes is, quite simply, going for long, leisurely drives in the country--and that's what this book is all about." Through this volume, we see 120 separate trips, each described in enough detail (normally 2-4 pages with a map) to decide if that tour might make sense to you.Let's look at a few examples. One from my own experience--many years ago--is California's Big Sur Coast (pages 74-77). The trip starts at Monterey, goes on to Carmel-by-the-Sea to Big Sur (what a view from the highway, as I recall!) to San Simeon and the Hearst Castle, ending in San Luis Obispo.I'm from Illinois, and there is precious little here from my home state! One is a trip from Galena to Port Byron; the other is a drive through the Shawnee Hills National Forest.I also lived in Western New York for many years. This tour ends at Niagara Falls, one of my favorite spots. The tour starts at the Eisenhower Lock along the Saint Lawrence River and winds through Ogdensburg (with its wonderful Remington Art Museum) to Thousand Island and on to Rochester and Old Fort Niagara with an end in Niagara Falls. I have seen many of these sites and can attest to the delight I would experience if I traveled the full length of this route.In the end, a delightful book to read and to provoke the imagination as to what the various trips would be like.

We have used and loved the Reader's Digests' "Most Scenic Drives in America" for several editions now, and decided to purchase the latest edition in an e-reader format, for ease of use. I expected the e-edition to be somewhat clunky, given that the book has lots of maps and pictures, but it I did not expect it to be virtually useless -- which it is. The absence of a table of contents makes it virtually impossible to use for trip planning. If, for example, you wanted to see what was available in Arkansas, you would either have to search the word "Arkansas", you get 29 hits, several of which have nothing to do with travelling in the state. For the first two sections -- the West and the Rocky Mountains -- there are regional lists of drives, but I could not find these for the rest of the regions.Anyone who is planning a road trip in the US should certainly own this book -- it's been a great help to us in planning trips, and has helped build many beautiful memories. Definitely, a five star effort. JUST DON'T BUY THE EBOOK.

While it's true that a table of contents or an index is missing from the Kindle implementation, it's still a great book. Instead of the missing content table, it has 4 regional route overviews (West, Rockies, Central, Eastern) inside the book. The usability can be greatly improved by going through the book and adding bookmarks at all 4 region overviews, which cost me less than 15 minutes.

Big, beautiful, coffee-table book with great drives and detailed maps. However, I can't imagine taking it on a driving trip because it is very large and heavy. The maps are too big to copy on a regular-size sheet of paper. So, unfortunately, I returned the book in favor of a smaller one.

This edition is defective and i hope the editors read this review and fix it, because if they do it will be a great book:The problem with this kindle edition is they have mixed some states in their central states region map and content and in the eastern states map and content resulting that all those roads in those states have mixed numbers that do not coincide with the roads description:The states that show repeated in both regions are:IN, OH, KY, TN, MS, AL and MS. All of those have wrong roads description numbers and you can not find the road trip by the number, sometimes you can just not find it at all. You will have to spent an incredible amount of time figuring out which on it is making it unusable. When you are busy on the road you will not have the time to figure those things out. I did not have the time to check the rest of the book to see if there are more errors or try more regions. I had to return it.Hopefully this gets fixed by the editors because this book is expensive compared with similar great books like the "National Geographic guide to Scenic Highways and Byways": I have that too and is greatly useful with no errors.

I've taken 4 of these drives and they were well worth the price of this book. Sure you can find recommendations on the internet for free, but Reader's Digest calls upon tried and true routes. They give you a good idea of where you want to go and as I was driving through the areas, I'd have someone read the description. That really added to the drive.I know you may be hesitant, but I'd say go ahead and buy this book and read about the drive as you're experiencing it. It's worth the money.

This particular book I purchased as a gift for my grandson. I own my own copy and have used it for numerous trips that are included in the book. It is very helpful; takes you on road that are "off the beaten path" and shows you a great part of the country that doesn't get seen when driving the interstates.

I sent this as a Christmas gift last year to some family members who are starting to plan road trips with their grandkids. They've traveled all over the world (including US) and they truly loved this. What steered me towards it were the reviews, and I'll just add mine. Also, they're under strict instructions to let me know if they don't like something, lol. This is a 2nd hand review, but still legit!
