Pros: It was very entertaining as it takes you back to those late 60s, early 70s.Cons: Short, I found I wanted more.Paul McCartney Is Dead – And What This Book is About I just finished reading this book and I; yes even I did not know all of the clues listed in this book to the mysterious death of Paul McCartney. This book was truly a fascinating read. Some of you may be confused about what I am saying when I write that this book is about the "mysterious death of Paul McCartney." Because, isn't he alive and all? Well this book covers exhaustively the urban legend that the "real" Paul McCartney had indeed died in 1966 and was replaced by a look-a-like William Shears Campbell. In 1969, this urban legend started on a radio show when a listener called up and started spewing out these clues that The Beatles themselves had left on their albums to inform the public. Fans will still discuss the clues today, and try and find new ones to share. Even I toward the end of this review had given a couple of my own. I love that the author takes you back to the very beginning, that one dark night in 1969 on a radio station where the DJ kept Tom on the phone a long while and discussed this revelation. The DJ also rolled his eyes and scoffed at such nonsense, but eventually it made the scoffer think too. The story is that Paul died on Wednesday morning at five o'clock on November 22, 1966 in a car accident. This was such a car accident that either decapitated him or causes a serious head injury that had lead to his death. The Beatles were the most successful rock band on the planet, and to keep the band going, it was decided that they should replace Paul with a look-alike and keep the death secret. The fans would probably not go for another musician to take the place of Paul, so hide the fact that it is someone new. The clues were found in the Beatles song lyrics, and on Beatles album covers mainly. For instance, their last studio album Abbey Road has many clues that Paul is dead. There is the front cover picture where Paul is barefoot and out of step with the other three Beatles. There is the punch buggy's license plate that reads 28IF. On the back cover there is a crack in the word BEATLES and a sideways shadow of a skull. Why do these things mean that Paul is dead? Well, read the book and find out. The book goes through chapter by chapter explaining the origins of the urban legend and the movement. Author R. Gary Patterson makes it such an easy and enjoyable read, for me anyway. I'm not sure how non-Beatles fans would take to a book like this. Patterson includes a chapter on convicted murderer, Charles Manson, and the effects that Beatles music had on him. Then on a much lighter note, there is a fun chapter that is dedicated to a quiz that Patterson had put together. Just like a teacher, which Patterson is, he includes most of the answers to the questions in this quiz are found in the chapters of this book. That is kind of how this little book is set up actually, a high school text book that reviews the history of this point in time, and this one facet of a story of a phenomenon that can be viewed, studied and analyzed from countless sides and point of view. There were not only clues, but little tidbits included in these pages that I had no idea were true or even Beatle history. For example, did you know John Lennon recorded himself typing his first name and included it in his 1967 super hit Strawberry Fields Forever.Why I Loved It From the title and cover, I got the impression that this book was just going to read like a checklist with some commentary. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was not like that at all. The author R. Gary Patterson starts at the beginning and works through the history of clues on each consecutive Beatles album. He warns you in the beginning that there are three types of clues presented in this book; there are the legitimate clues that will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck, there are the mediocre clues, and the just plain ridiculous. I must say that there were quite a few clues that my eyes rolled at and my voice pshawed. A hypothesis is also put forth that The Beatles did put in clues in order to sell more records. A point was made that when Abbey Road was released in late 1969, it didn't do too well, and when this conspiracy theory became widespread, then not only new release Abbey Road started selling, but also some of the older records in the Beatles catalog as well. Interesting? Or was it the release of George Harrison's amazing song Something or John's Come Together that boosted sales of the album? One of the ridiculous clues makes the reader say come on already. The issue of the magazine Time with Paul on the cover is also considered a clue, no matter how ridiculous. Paul is on the cover with his wife Linda and the caption reads "Paul Is Still With Us" in order to refute the insanity of Paul Is Dead (this shows how widespread and popular this theory was), and the Beatle conspiracy fans put a spin on even this. It turns out that on the backside to the magazine cover is an advertisement for a car. They say when you hold it up to the light; the car is heading right for Paul's head. This is the definition of reaching. I think the one major thing that I learned from this book that I did not understand before, is that 'Paul is Dead', was sort of like a cultural movement in the world of the music fan. It was a game that Beatles fans got together and played, and anyone could play, as long as you have an imagination. It was perhaps the subject of discussion in a smokey basement. You would go home and discover, then bring it your table of friends the next day and test it out. Those were the best of times, and they were the worst of times. Paul could be dead, which would be sad - yet on the other hand, you have a fun subject of conversation and competition. One of the greatest things about this book, is that this is one of the very few instances where we can actually pinpoint the birth of an urban legend. Most of these urban legends that we hear of, we could never try to guess the origin of most of these.Some Clues That I Have Uncovered I thought of a couple of more "clues" not mentioned in this book. For example, on the back cover of Ringo's solo album, Rotogravure there is a door with a lot of writing, and the address of the building is three, possibly symbolizing that there are only three remaining Beatles at that time (1976). How about this one? Also from a Ringo solo album, Paul wrote Ringo a song called Six O'clock in the Morning and the first words of the lyrics are:"Six O'clock in the morning You've just gone to sleep I wipe a tear from my eye" You see? If Paul got into the accident at five in the morning, then maybe six o'clock was the time of death? Ringo is wiping "a tear from his eye". Another one that I thought of is really sort of far fetched. Toward the end of the song All You Need IS Love, John says something that sounds like "Yes, he's dead". Now that clue has already been discovered, but what happens immediately after he says that could be taken as another clue possibly. As soon as John utters, "Yes, he's dead", part of the string arrangement immediately breaks off and starts to play the melody for Greensleeves. Now the melody of this old renaissance song, Greensleeves has also had another life as a Christmas hymn called What Child Is This?. So, "Yes, he's dead"..and what child is this?. It's like he affirms Paul is dead, and who is this imposter pretending to be Paul McCartney?

4.5 stars out of 5I've been a big Beatles fan since I was in high school. I'm not sure when I first heard of the Paul Is Dead (PID) rumors, but I didn't really give them much credence until a few months ago, surprisingly. I say surprisingly because I'm a conspiracy guy; I believe in the Conspiratorial View of history as opposed to the Accidental View of history (the New World Order is real, folks). So with that said, many always roll their eyes and assume, "Oh, another nutter who'll believe in ANYTHING." However, in truth I'm a pretty skeptical guy. I'm open minded enough to consider all possibilities because the world is a strange, strange place. But I try to always engage in critical thinking for any subject; there is a tremendous and obvious amount of info out there on numerous subjects that is either disinfo or misinfo. So I need facts and a lot of evidence.Concerning PID, I started off with a strong bias and skepticism that Paul McCartney had actually died in the mid-60's. Way too difficult to pull off, in my opinion. Frankly, I still am not 100% that the premise of this story is true; I'm probably 95%. But Mr. Patterson's book helped steer me towards where I'm at now.True to another reviewer's point, this book is now a bit dated. But it is still a very good read and definitely worth it if you can find a good used price. Patterson mostly covers the esoteric clues in the Beatles music and artwork. When considered in totality, it definitely leaves one to wonder and consider the possibilities. True, the Beatles (or the record label big-wigs) might of simply included all of this as a game or for even marketing purposes to promote album sales. But when considering the inclusion of the evil Aleister Crowley and possible ties to the Tavistock Institute (among other esoteric clues), then things seem to be much more than a simple game.To me, the music and artwork clues hold the least amount of weight and where this book shines is the all to infrequent pieces of evidence such as the snippet about Dr. Henry Truby. Truby was a Florida professor who did voiceprint analysis of three songs: Penny Lane, Hey Jude and Yesterday. All three songs produced three different sonograms; there were three different voices for the lead vocals. But apparently after spilling these beans on a radio show in the late 60's he was threatened and clammed up afterwards.Even more importantly, I would like Mr. Patterson's take on the more recent work of the Italian forensic scientists who set out to prove the PID to be nothing more than conspiracy theory but instead found very surprising results. Their work was featured in the Italian version of WIRED magazine in 2009. You can find a rough machine translation here: [...] Their findings was that there were major discrepancies in pre and post 1966 photographs of Paul. Evidence such as this conducted by industry professionals is very troubling to the naysayers and Paul is Alive contingent. It's troubling to me; I still hold out hope this really isn't true.In conclusion, this book is definitely worth a read. Patterson never comes right out and gives his opinion as to what side he leans towards, which I really appreciate. Any kind of bias either way would of been a turn off. Bias can never lead one to truth.

This book makes a compelling case for the PID (Paul is dead) theory that dates back to the late '60's. While much of the evidence is circumstantial, when added together, makes a small mountain of evidence that can't be rationally explained away by the hordes of die-hard fans of Mr. McCartney. While there are better, more detailed books out there on this subject, they are sometimes pricey. This book (used) was reasonably priced. Besides, I read Mr. Patterson's other book 'Take a walk on the Dark Side' on the many mysterious & unnatural deaths among Rock performers & bands down through the decades, & found it very entertaining. Obviously the author had enough material on the PID mystery to turn it into an entire book. This book is dated (1996), & much more evidence has come to light, including the 2008 Italian forensic team, who, before they began their investigation, figured it would be a 'slam-dunk' in proving today's Paul McCartney was the real McCoy. Much to their surprise, the forensic evidence showed otherwise & they came away PID believers! May this book lead readers down the path to truth on discovering & piecing together Rock & Roll's greatest & least talked about mystery.

I enjoyed this read, not so sure on all the facts, but better than none.

Humm...

Gary has packed loads of examples of the death clues in this little book for even the well initiated Beatle fan. The only criticism may be that certain examples are a bit of a stretch, even under the most intense whims of hallucinogenic persuasion. That said, it is a great, fun read and I promise you will find any number of clues of which you were unaware. Fascinating fun!!!

Probably the finest single-volume book on the on the subject of the military history of the Eastern front (and I have read dozens). Glanz spent 30 yrs in the U.S. Army, and taught at West Point, The Combat Studies Institute, and the U.S. Army War College. He has written more than half a dozen studies for the U.S. Army and over thirty books on WWII's Eastern front. Essentially, the man needs a suitcase just to carry around his credentials.He is, indeed, the world's foremost authority on the German-Soviet war. This book is well-written, meticulously researched, documented, and footnoted. It is a model of modern, informed scholarship. My only quibble is this: Though it is a common -- almost universal -- failing with scholarly books nowadays, the index is sadly skimpy, which degrades its usefulness as a reference volume. Having previously worked as the managing editor of a university press, I know this, of course, is not the fault of the author but of his publisher-- who either could not or would not pay the money to hire a skilled professional indexer. The type is, as Mr. Glusman stated, is not particularly large, especially in the ancillary materials, but the book is already 557 pages long, plus front matter, so an increase in type size (and, by necessity, leading) would create an unwieldy tomb of over 700 pages.Personally, I am 65 and have no trouble reading the text (and footnotes) at all. But in the off chance that you do, my advice is to invest in a magnifying lens.The book is well worth it

I jumped into this book after realizing that I, like many dedicated amateur historians, had only a superficial knowledge of operations on the Eastern Front in the Second World War. This book certainly went a long way towards correcting that.What I'll say for it, both good and bad, is that you should understand that this is a detailed history of operations - down to the movements of individual units. This is very much a military history and not a political one.

Just the facts, ma'm. Well not really and by that i do not mean the authors were lying but this is a very dry recitation. It includes hardly any personal obersavations or remembrances, but it never said it was a popular history. Still, a little something, now and then about the higher ups at least would have been nice. (I know some authors of war books like to set themselves up on some sort of moral superiority pedestal and call that 'war porn'.) When you look at the numbers of divisions the Red Army was fighting compared to those of the Western Allies, it is beyond a doubt the USSR bore the brunt of the fighting, but there was very little on Lend-Lease (when someone else is building your trucks you can devote more of your resources to building tanks) and militarily the Western Allies were presented as almost negligible contributors. I understand, the authors were writing a war about the war on the Eastern Front and they only had so much room.What this book is, is a clear distillation of what happened militarily on the eastern front. It covers every major campaign, and does not waste a lot of space with the pre-war years (not the Purges - again!) and I doubt I will have a better one-volume military history of the war that covers both the earlier and later battles with equal attention. Several one volume histories I have read seem to stop somewhere right after Stalingrad, Kursk get a little, and then next thing you know (20 pages later, it seems) the Russians are raising the flag over the Reichstag. I finally got to read about Operation Bagration, and what happened in the Baltic States. Maps were good enough. Well written.

When Titans Clashed is a must read for anyone wishing to understand the vast scope of the war in the east and the terrible cost.

Fascinating history, well written and documented. In addition to battle histories there is much discussion about the poor strategic decisions of both Hitler and Stalin, leading needlessly to list life, captured armies and battle failures.

Great book. This answered almost all the questions I had on the eastern front that still after reading many books I did not have the answer to.I only have maybe two questions left and one no one can answer. Superb book with lots of good information. I am going to read it a second time down the road.

A tremendously thorough write up of both German and Soviet sides of the conflict. Entire chapters dedicated to the tactics of specific commanders, vehicles, weapons, etc. It's taken me months to get through the book, and I'm glad I did.

I bought this book for a World War II class I took and loved the book. This is well written so if you like the subject, you'll love this book.

As a former long-distance runner and as a mom who lives with severe anxiety, I really enjoyed reading this book! I connected with Alsha's down-to-earth, honest writing right away. I appreciated the unique structure of this book through Alisha's documentation of her races, and she depicted every experience so vividly - the Tough Mudder was a major standout! Even if I hadn't been a runner, particularly anxious or a mom, this book has a wide appeal. It's unusual to read a book written by a "baseball wife" and it was fascinating to read behind the scenes of that lifestyle. I enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone who would like fresh insights into using exercise to help manage anxiety, to all runners (especially women!) and to everyone who wants to read a compelling​ memoir.

This book is amazing! I enjoy reading it. Her book has helped me through things. She is a down to earth writer. I love how true she is in this book. She is a person I can relate to a lot from this book. When you think your the only person out there dealing with issues you find out your not. It has helped me come out of my shell a lot. Knowing what I have gone through this past year in my general life this book help me through a lot. I have marked a whole bunch of spots through out the book that when I need a boost I go to them and read the parts I need to have have highlighted things that have helped me too. I bought this book for my sister too just because I enjoys this book so much! I hope Alisha will be writing another book! I heard there possibly could be another in the mix! She a very personable person and down to earth and if you like books like that and like how truthful a book can be I highly recommend it. I am also, running my first marathon this summer in Duluth, MN and this was just what I needed to read before doing the run this summer. There is so much more I could say I personally wrote her a message and was excited to hear back from her she is one person I truly look up too!

I admit that I purchased this book because I am a fan of the Minnesota Twins. I enjoy reading about the family side of the players. I have also suffered from anxiety and depression and was interested to see that Alisha was explaining just how I had been feeling. It was a great read!! Loved it

I could not put this book down and want to read it again. It matters not if you are a runner or if you struggle with anxiety (I do BOTH)!! When reading Alisha's story it was almost as though I was reading about myself other than the fact that I don't run a half marathon per month and I do run outside in the FRIGID MN winters... I highly recommend this book and will be sharing with family and friends. Thank you Alisha for being so brave and sharing your story and your struggles. This book was incredible. I could really relate to Alisha as I suffer from anxiety and have turned to running to help cope. It also helped that I too live in MN and could relate to all of the local running events that Alisha mentions throughout her amazing book. What I really liked, is how Alisha opens up about her struggles and shares that with the world and doesn't hide it. She is true, real and truly inspirational. I would highly recommend this book if you are a runner, with anxiety or not and those looking to get into running. It's a great story of perseverance, determinations and guts. Very well written.

As a lifelong MN Twins fan, and also a fellow anxiety sufferer, I knew I had to read this book. I'm so glad I did. Alisha has a great sense of humor and was able to make me realize that I am not "strange" for having anxiety. My favorite part was how she discussed her faith. That really hit home and helped ease some of my guilt about worrying all the time. I made my husband read this also and he read it in one day and loved it. It really helped him to understand how I feel when having my anxiety moments, and for that I have so much gratitude towards Alisha.

I read this book in roughly one day and as a fellow runner, it hit home pretty close. Running saved me at a hard time in my life and although our hardships and triumphs are different, I couldn't have related more. I would recommend this book to anyone, runner or not. It is humorous, happy, raw and most important, real.I hope there are more books in the making from Alisha!

While the story starts off a little slow, it was not long before I was completely caught up in this fascinating world and could not put this book down. The Locksmith's Daughter follows a young woman named Mallory Bright who, after a scandalous incident*, must make a new path for herself by spying for none other than Queen Elizabeth's Spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham. Not only does Mallory employ her lockpicking skills (learned from her locksmith father,) but also learns new tools of the trade before spying on and helping to expose Catholics threatening the Protestant reign of Elizabeth. Mallory's web of spying darkens and her world is turned upside down by life-shattering revelations in the process. Although this novel has a interesting premise, I found the plot points to be very predictable. The reader doesn't really start getting a clear picture of "scandalous incident*", i.e. what happened preceding the novel until about half way through the book. That said, I felt The Locksmith's Daughter could have started earlier than it actually does. The events that have caused Mallory so much pain seems to be very important to her current mental and emotional state, although we only see it in glimpses and even then I felt it was glossed over (as are much of the events in the novel.)I enjoyed learning about the locksmith trade at the time, and did find it plausible that Mallory, as the daughter of an indulgent father, would have knowledge of such things. What I did not find believable was the sometimes too modern dialogue.I sadly found the writing style and prose to be kind of tepid, unimaginative, and predictable (the only scene that grabbed me was the execution scene.) What's more, even though the plot seemed to follow familiar beats, the characters often seemed to act at random and without motivation or build up. Perhaps if we'd gotten that full backstory earlier, some actions would have made more sense? In turn, I also felt the romance aspect was very forced and shoe-horned. Overall, these lacking elements meant I found The Locksmith's Daughter to be a bit of a slog since I didn't particularly care about the plot or characters. Needless to say, I was disappointed by this one. Sorry!

I truly enjoyed this book. It's long, and I was a bit worried about reading it in time for my book club, but the story is well written and drew me in so the pages flew by. Our book club discussion was rich and there was a lot to talk about - women's roles, religion and acceptance of different beliefs, historical references, and more. The author did a great job of giving the reader a rich understanding of the time (1580s England), while incorporating that understanding into a story that had me anxious to see what happened next.The author summarizes the book well at the end in her interview at the end, saying how she hopes the reader "feels a sense of history, but particularly, the humanity that links us across the eons - how, for all our differences and so-called advances we are more alike than not - we still love, laugh, make silly and great decisiions and gestures, suffer, long, grieve and triumph. "I received this book as a member of the Harper Collins Book Club Girl book club.

Well written, if extremely unrealistic book. This author certainly didn't try very hard to understand Elizabethan attitudes and came across rather judgemental instead. I also found some inconsistency with character development. There are a couple of plot twists with the characters acting in uncharacteristic ways. This author tried too hard to get a happy ending all around. I hope she keeps trying though because there's definite potential here.

The Locksmith's Daughter starts with a fallen daughter returned home. The circumstances begin murkily and are eventually revealed. She is the daughter of a locksmith and his recusant Italian wife. They have a boarder who seems to have a Marlowe esque character. Things are not happy and her fathers solution is to ask his old friend spymaster Francis Walsingham for help finding her a position. He does, but it is as a watcher. She is skilled in languages, lock-picking and math. Her skills are exceptional but her conscience struggles with the end results - brutal executions. She also discovers that not everything is as it seems. Wonderful story.

I rented a used textbook for a class and it came in a very good used condition. There was very minimal pencil marks in it so it was easy to read and the corners of the pages were slightly bent, but not that bad.Aside from the condition of the book, I was surprised at the clarity of the information and I liked that it had work pages that you could fill out to help you with figuring out how to eat better and exercise more efficiently. I also liked that it had exercise and stretching positions and moves, and explained how the positions/moves help or harm you.

I was hoping to rent this book as I needed it for a class, but I bought it for a large price-but it is packed full of important and useful information for life outside of the class. I know i've gone back in and read about the nutrition section for personal use. I would like to see it as a rental option though for future students.

Bradshaw is a Visiting Fellow and Director of the Anthrozoology Institute at the University of Bristol, where he was formerly Reader in Companion Animal Behavior and University Research Theme Leader for Animal Welfare & Behavior. I had a recent catless period of several years that ends this Saturday, when i will be adopting a beautiful blue point traditional Siamese kitten. nonetheless, I haven't had a cat for several years, and was feeling a bit out date on my knowledge.My reaction to that feeling of insufficient knowledge has been to devour a number of books about cats. of all the books, this one stands out well above the rest in terms of the quality, depth and breadth of information. It reads like a good college psychology textbook, except that it is the psychology of cats, not humans.If you're a cat nerd, work with cats, or are just looking for a book that is packed full of information on cats and don't mind giving your grey matter a bit of a workout, this is, IMO *THE* book to read. Once you finish, you'll be familiar with the latest theories on feline behavior, and the results of numerous cat studies.Pros:-lots of wonderful information-not dumbed down-includes academic references and charts to help you put the information in perspective.Cons:-expensive-*not* light reading.-it is printed in a pretty small font

This is highly technical and scientific look at cat behavior. It will be a bit dry and heavy for someone who is not a vet, vet tech, or professional behaviorist. For those "in the business", it is a must.

Outstanding reading by one the best art critics of the 20th and 21st centuries

(Review based on paperback ARC not the hardback--no way to evaluate price of HB or final appearance as a result)I ordered this without any familiarity with John Berger. I saw he was described as a Marxist art critic and that he'd written several other books about art, including the similarly named "Portraits". That book, apparently is a look at the history of art with some inspiration for the journey coming from portraits. Unfortunately, reading about it, I was dismayed that the portraits were not actually shown in the book, other than as small black and white reproductions. I thought, "If a book about art history through landscape painting doesn't show the actual colors, etc. to get an idea of the original, I will be very dissatisfied with the book." How can you write about the history of art through landscape painting and not show the paintings? Imo, really, you shouldn't do that.So when this copy came--6x9", small format to show paintings--I was relieved to see there are NO paintings reproduced in here, not as black and white photos or otherwise. This is a collection of essay, a "landscape" of Berger's thoughts on his life, people, ideas that have influenced him, writing/authors he liked and disliked and, of course, art. (I don't understand the reviewer who said it combines drawings and text. Believe me, there are essays here, and not drawings. It's a book of essays, with thoughts about many things, many aspects of art both written and visual--but there are no pictures and it would seem very odd if there were.)I began, dutifully, with the introduction by Tom Overton. It prepared me for a book of criticism and was not an easy read. It reminded me how many years its been since I read much literary criticism. (It also reminded me that I haven't missed it.) I prepared myself for Berger's work to be more of the same.Surprise! From the first words of his first chapter, I had a pleasant surprise--John Berger's a good writer who uses fiction techniques (including a narrative, anecdotes, vivid descriptions, characterization) in his essays. It turns out that Berger was a painter and writer until he was thirty and, in the years that followed, concentrated on writing--both fiction and non-fiction, in the latter becoming particularly well known as a critic. Don't be put off by the introduction by someone else. Berger himself is a very good writer.These essays are interesting, scattershot through the years now collected together here, rather than being written as chapters to develop a topic or theme for a cohesively-themed book. I liked this actually, because it offered variety in both topic and tone. It's kind of a landscape--bits and pieces of different things to observe whether important people (good and bad) influencing his life (e.g. an important childhood friend, his overbearing father, a friend's suicide). He spends time with writers who influenced him (Joyce, Barthes, Marquez and others) and how, though always in a kind of "I'm telling you a story" narrative rather than a preachy one. A lot is about literature, but he writes about art and artists, too (Picasso & Braque, some from the Renaissance, the Romantics, others). Also travels and people he has met in the course of them.As a photographer, I enjoyed the chapter "No More Portraits". To my surprise, I also enjoyed some of the quirky essay topics like "The Historical Function of the Museum". It sounds dry, but he took on the modern curators in a way that will antagonize them (but was fun to read--and may even be true). There's a lot to get out of this book that may send you looking up more about a person or topic (Rosa Luxemburg, Walter Benjamin, Berthold Brecht. He identifies himself as a Marxist but has many critical reflections on Soviet art--not a cliché.)All in all, a well written collection of essays that could propel any interested person in a variety of directions as a result of the reading..

John Berger always gives sustenance of the highest order.
