About the Author
John W. S. Bradshaw is a Visiting Fellow and Director of the Anthrozoology Institute at the University of Bristol, where he was formerly Reader in Companion Animal Behavior and University Research Theme Leader for Animal Welfare & Behavior. His main research interests are in the behavior and welfare of domestic cats and dogs, and their relationships with people; he has published over 100 research papers and book chapters on these topics. Since 2009 he has focused his attention on the dissemination of animal welfare science to pet owners: his book Dog Sense/In Defence of Dogs was a non-fiction bestseller in both the UK and USA in 2011, and has been translated into nine other languages. He was one of the founders of the International Society for Anthrozoology (ISAZ), and has been a member of the Council of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) and set up its Accreditation Committee (1999-present). I have loved cats since, at age three of four my mother humored me and took in a stray orange cat that I named Meow Meow. I had a recent catless period of several years that ends this Saturday, when i will be adopting a beautiful blue point traditional Siamese kitten. nonetheless, I haven't had a cat for several years, and was feeling a bit out date on my knowledge.My reaction to that feeling of insufficient knowledge has been to devour a number of books about cats. of all the books, this one stands out well above the rest in terms of the quality, depth and breadth of information. It reads like a good college psychology textbook, except that it is the psychology of cats, not humans.If you're a cat nerd, work with cats, or are just looking for a book that is packed full of information on cats and don't mind giving your grey matter a bit of a workout, this is, IMO *THE* book to read. Once you finish, you'll be familiar with the latest theories on feline behavior, and the results of numerous cat studies.Pros:-lots of wonderful information-not dumbed down-includes academic references and charts to help you put the information in perspective.Cons:-expensive-*not* light reading.-it is printed in a pretty small font
This is highly technical and scientific look at cat behavior. It will be a bit dry and heavy for someone who is not a vet, vet tech, or professional behaviorist. For those "in the business", it is a must.
Excellent book for professionals working with cats or anyone that wants to learn more about the most up to date research on cat behavior.

How can Amazon (or anyone) possibly justify the listed price for this PAPERBACK book? It's just as bad on Amazon.uk.I'm currently reading Bradshaw's "Cat Sense" -- a very interesting, informative, and reasonably priced book. I would love to acquire this one, too, but not at the cost of my firstborn!(Star rating based strictly on ridiculous price.)
