"Boy, Snow, Bird" was my book club's choice of the month. I'm not sure that I would have personally chosen this book to read but it's a great example of why I joined a book club in the first place. We are constantly exposed to books from different genres and themes and this month's theme was a fairy tale retold, and in this case, Snow White. There were larger issues, such as racism and how other's perception of you can shape your life and how you see yourself, displayed in this story. Constantly looking for the similarities to the Snow White fairy tale can become distracting which could, unfortunately, cause the reader to miss a lot of symbolism weaved throughout the storyline. The story dragged in the beginning and I wasn't quite sure what the point of the story was. At first, the only similarities I saw to Snow White were the references to the mirrors and one of the characters being named Snow. Otherwise, I just didn't see it, but I hung in there and the plot started to pick up after the 30% mark. Just as things really started coming to fruition the story ended very abruptly and without resolutions. This was unsettling to me and I find it very annoying to finish a book and feel that the story is unresolved. After my Book Club's dynamic discussion, I read a review article of "Boy, Snow, Bird", which also stated that there were no resolutions to the many issues presented in this book, and I felt vindicated that I wasn't alone in my assessment. It also got me thinking that maybe this was done on purpose because there are no real resolutions to these issues in real life, so why should we expect them to be resolved in a novel. I started to remember passages from the beginning of the book that didn't mean much at first but meant so much more now.Maybe this novel is just a vehicle to make us aware of these important issues, and designed to make us think.

Purchased this for a book club and was excited to see a new take on the snow white/evil step mother storyline. But this was just... Weird. The writing was at moments brilliant, and others utterly confusing. Never could get into the "rhythm" of reading it (and therefore get lost in the story) because you had to stop and reread certain sections over in order to understand exactly what this person was trying to say or what the narrator (if you can call her that) was talking about. And the ending, well... Random and half baked sum it up. Not that I was loving the book before the last 20 pages, but the ending killed any goodwill it had created up until that point. Would not recommend for a "fun" read. But it certainly was fun to discuss (and make fun of) during our book club!

When I see a movie or read a book, I'm always looking for something I've never read/seen before. As decades of reading pile up, I find so much I read and see so predictable. But this book, aaaah. I do not want to do what so many reviewers do and tell you what happens. But the themes: the power and pain of beauty, the decisions of motherhood, the meaning of family. And Oyeyemi's language, her play with words, her humor. I realize this is one of those books that folks either hate or love. If you're looking for a nice new twist on Snow White (like Wicked), forget about it. This is a book you've never read before.

Helen Oyeyemi was a new author to me, and I became aware of her book "Boy, Snow, Bird: A Novel" through an recommendation on Amazon. The narrative is in the first person, but each chapter has a different narrator, telling the story of one suffering family over two generations. How the women in this one family reach integration and peace of heart: this is at the heart of the novel. It is full of surprises, sometimes uncomfortable ones, from the start to the finish. In the end the reader needs to recognize that life must be embraced at deeper levels, as Boy, Snow and Bird do, in spite of all their difficulties.

Strong writing. I plan to reread this book. A couple of the characters were challenging to remember as they were spread over time. But that was just the writer's style. It was interesting that my assumptions about Boy's feelings and interaction with Snow was inaccurate. I misread the cues. Maybe that is what the writer intended. This is mostly a story about what happens when a child lives with abuse and rejection, how she makes adult choices and how those choices effect others. We're all familiar with examples the way abuse breeds abuse. But some survivors manage to subdue their anger and resentment just below the surface and leave those around them wondering what's at the root of that person's behavior. All of this goes on with a backdrop of issues around racial ambiguity. The main story could have progressed in much the same way even without the black family "passing" as white angle. And It felt as if nobody cared except the family members when the bloodlines where exposed for the town to see. All in all, the story was enjoyable. I would recommend it.

Couldn't understand why so many people gave it a bad review? It may have helped that I didn't think it was going to be anything like Snow White until I read the reviews. If I had started with that expectation, my review might be completely different. I really liked the characters and their development. I liked the twist in the middle. I am from an area where race relations have not always been smooth sailing and love across the colour bar was illegal. I found it intriguing and saddening but beautifully written. I really enjoyed it!

Engaging, but I found some sections confusing. The satisfaction I hoped for was not there upon finishing this book, as I had too many questions. Still, it held my attention, and I am considering rereading, to see if my confusion is answered.

Oyeyemi introduced a lot of complicated themes but didn't resolve them sufficiently. The ending was utterly bizarre and ruined all the hard work in character development in my eyes. There are some area of beautiful prose and the intimacies of the letter-writing between the sisters was spectacular.
